Basic Trope: A character believes that cranking up the heat on the oven or stovetop will speed the cooking of the food.

  • Straight: Alice puts a chicken in the oven. Instead of cooking it for 30 minutes at 300 degrees, she cooks it for 15 minutes at 600 degrees and burns it.
  • Exaggerated: Alice tries to cook the chicken at 3000 degrees for 30 seconds, and her house burns down.
  • Downplayed: Alice roasts the chicken for 25 minutes at 350 degrees. The chicken isn't destroyed, but it doesn't taste quite right.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is pressed for time, as Bob forgot to defrost the chicken like he was asked to, and the dinner party is minutes away.
    • Alice is The Ditz, or at least has grabbed the Idiot Ball.
    • Alice subscribes to Insane Troll Logic.
    • Alice is just terrible at cooking.
    • (for downplayed) The recipe assumes convection oven, while Alice has a non-convection oven.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice needs to chill some gazpacho, and reasons that putting it in the freezer will accomplish that task faster than putting it in the fridge.
    • Alice applies oven logic in reverse by cooking the chicken for two hours at 75 degrees. "The longer it takes, the more it'll be worth the wait!"
  • Subverted:
    • Alice says "Hmm. This is too long. How about I do it quicker?" Alice is revealed to be using the three recommended times for 250, 280 and 300 degrees respectively to derive a function for extrapolating to the 240 degrees max of her oven.note
    • Alice isn't baking a meal at 1000°C, she's 'baking' a PCB.
  • Double Subverted: Bob worries that the roast won't be ready in time, and when Alice leaves the kitchen to go change for the party, he cranks up the heat.
  • Parodied:
    • The smoke detector goes off... and Alice announces that dinner's ready.
    • Alice lights her house on fire... just to cook a chicken.
    • Alice sets the oven to the temperature of the sun, burns down the entire house... and the oven survives, with a perfectly baked chicken in the center.
  • Zig-Zagged:
    • Alice applies Oven Logic for some dishes, Reverse Oven Logic for others, and disregards it for still others.
    • Alice and Bob take turns turning the oven's temperature from normal to too hot to too cold and back.
  • Averted: Alice follows the recipe as it's written, and places the chicken into the oven at a normal roasting temperature.
  • Enforced: Rule of Funny
  • Lampshaded: "If I roast it at 550 degrees, that should get it done faster! It's simple mathematics."
  • Invoked: Alice asks Bob to defrost the chicken for her while she goes out to run errands. Bob forgets, Alice returns, and the chicken is still frozen. Meanwhile, the guests will be arriving soon.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied:
    • Alice quickly realizes that such a thing would not work and decides to cook the chicken normally.
    • Alice defrosts the chicken, puts it in the oven, and decides to stall the guests until it's ready.
    • Seeing as there's no time to defrost and properly cook the chicken, Alice orders Peking duck.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied:
    • When Bob tells Alice that the chicken needs to be cooked, she assures him that she can "do it quickly." Bob then notices a funny odor.
    • When Alice comes back out of the kitchen, the chicken is pitch black, and Alice has no hair on her head.
  • Played for Laughs: Alice tries to set the oven temperature to 5,000 degrees. However, this causes the chicken to inflate and destroy the entire neighborhood. And it isn't even cooked.
  • Played for Drama: Alice burns herself on the oven while it's set to be too hot.
  • Played for Horror: The overloaded kitchen explodes and kills Alice.
