Basic Trope: A character is their own ancestor thanks to time-travel.

  • Straight:
    • Bob ended up going back in time and impregnating Stacy, his grandmother, with his father Greg, thus becoming his own grandfather.
    • Alice goes back in time and falls in love with her grandfather Matt, conceiving her mother Chloe and becoming her own grandmother.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob's actions in the past result in his grandfather and grandmother getting together, meaning he's responsible for his own conception.
    • Bob goes back hundreds of years and becomes his own distant ancestor.
    • Alice's actions in the past gave her parents the idea to name their child after her, thus becoming her own namesake.
    • Bob and Alice are the reincarnations of their grandparents.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Bob sleeps with his grandmother Stacy, but remembers to bring a condom.
    • Alice meets Matt, and eventually they start dating, but when Matt asks Alice if she'd like to sleep with him, she refuses.
    • Time travel creates a different universe, so they didn't conceive with their Stacy and Matt.
    • Alice and Bob go back in time and both end up sleeping with their grandparents, however, when they realize that Matt and Stacy are their grandparents, they worry about the implications and Alice and Stacy take pregnancy tests. It turns out, they're not pregnant.
    • Alice and Bob are stuck in time for a month, during which they sleep with their grandparents and Alice and Stacy become pregnant. However, it turns out via a Daddy DNA Test that Alice is actually pregnant to George, a man she slept with before time travel, and Stacy is pregnant to Sid, Bob's real grandfather.
  • Double Subverted:
    • Bob's condom broke, resulting in him becoming his own grandfather after all.
    • She instead falls in love with Max, who turns out to be her real grandfather.
    • Greg and Chloe end up in Alice and Bob's universe, and end up conceiving them there anyway.
    • The tests gave false negatives.
    • It turns out that Stacy and Sid's child was not Greg, but Bob's uncle Walt, and when they go back in time again, they conceive Greg and Chloe, making them their own grandparents, and Alice and George's daughter Charlotte...her own aunt?
  • Parodied:
    • Bob's father/son Greg sues him for child support.
    • Alice and Chloe are at a loss when it comes to celebrating "Mother's Day."
  • Zig Zagged: Greg's father is unknown, but his son Bob is one possible candidate.
  • Averted: No-one becomes their own grandfather/grandmother/ancestor.
  • Enforced: "We want to confuse the Hell out of our viewers. Let's make Bob his own grandfather!"
  • Lampshaded:
  • Invoked: Emperor Evulz realizes being your own grandparent makes you Immune to Fate, so he goes back in time and seduces his grandmother.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz manipulates Bob into becoming his own grandpa, so he can just kill Stacy and Ret Gone Bob from existence.
  • Defied:
    • Someone makes the rules of time travel, which prevent anyone from being their own ancestor, and Alice and Bob stick by the rules.
    • Alice and Bob refuse to have sex while time-travelling.
  • Discussed: "Isn't it kind of weird how all the time travelers worry about killing their grandparents?" "Well better that than worry about becoming their own grandparents, as then nobody at all would time travel."
  • Conversed: "What kind of sick person would even go back in time to seduce their grandparent?" "Well multiple factors could be at play, such as not recognizing their grandparent or being forced to fulfill a Stable Time Loop."
  • Implied:
    • Bob is the spitting image of his grandpa, who mysteriously disappeared after grandma Stacy got pregnant.
    • Alice doesn't have any kids that she knows of, but she has a vague memory of giving birth to a baby girl and naming her Chloe.
  • Deconstructed:
  • Reconstructed:
  • Played For Laughs: Alice and Bob regularly remind their parents they're their parents to avoid getting punishments.
  • Played For Drama: Because of Alice and Bob, their grandparents Matt & Stacy end up demeaned and disrespected, in turn causing their parent/child Chloe & Greg to grow up hating their missing parent because of the insults they received. Thus, Alice and Bob's parents don't take the truth very well.
