Go To

Basic Trope: The hero loves dogs.

  • Straight: Bob has a dog, of which he is very fond and takes good care.
  • Exaggerated: Bob has adopted every stray dog he's come across because he loves them so much.
  • Downplayed:
    • Bob does not have a dog, but he gently pets one that belongs to his girlfriend Alice.
    • Bob is kind of a Jerkass Anti-Hero, but he does have a soft spot for his dog.
  • Justified: Bob is a very sociable Nice Guy, which makes him a good hero and also means he enjoys playing with dogs, given their affectionate nature.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Bob is seen feeding and walking a dog...but it turns out it belongs to his girlfriend Alice and he's taking care of it for a week.
    • Bob owns and takes care of his dog nicely, but he turns out to be a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
  • Double Subverted:
    • But when Alice's dog has puppies and she offers him one, he gleefully takes it.
    • Turns out, Bob is still a Sheep in Sheep's Clothing when it comes to dogs.
  • Parodied: Bob takes time between his heroic work to make a hammy speech about the virtues of dogs.
  • Zig Zagged:
    • Bob is seen taking care of a dog, which turns out to be his girlfriend Alice's, but when she offers him a puppy he gleefully takes it. However, it turns out he wants to train the puppy to be useful tracking down the monsters he fights...but that doesn't mean he doesn't care about it personally; when one of the monsters attacks it, Bob beats the monster to save the dog, which he cares for tenderly until it's healed before sending it out again.
    • Both The Hero and the Big Bad love dogs, and they both take care of their dogs to a respectable level. As thus, the Big Bad sees the Hero as a Worthy Opponent due to their love of dogs.
  • Averted: No dogs appear in the story.
  • Enforced: The executives want it to be very clear who's the hero, so they give Bob a dog to love.
  • Lampshaded: "Of course Bob loves dogs. Heroes and dogs go way back."
  • Invoked: ???
  • Exploited: Bob's enemies capture the dog and threaten to kill it to get him to come face them.
  • Defied: ???
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: "How many times in a movie doesn't the hero have a dog?"
  • Implied: Bob walks out of his house and goes to a building, whereupon some dogs start barking happily. Then we see the building is an animal shelter.
