Basic Trope: A marriage is genuinely happy and successful.

  • Straight: Alice and Bob are married, are in love with each other, rarely fight and intend to stay together for the rest of their lives.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: Alice and Bob are far from a perfect couple and have their ups and downs, but still care for each other.
  • Justified: Alice and Bob have a great deal in common and work hard to maintain their relationship.
  • Inverted: Bob and Alice hate being married and can barely tolerate each other.
  • Subverted:
  • Double Subverted:
    • In the process of maintaining their Happy Marriage Charade, Bob and Alice end up falling in love again and their marriage becomes genuinely happy.
    • It is revealed that Bob was Faking the Dead. As soon as Ethan is arrested for attempted murder, Bob and Alice hook up again.
  • Parodied: Bob and Alice are impossibly happy even as bad things repeatedly happen, with even a Hate Plague unable to suppress their Sickeningly Sweethearts nature.
  • Zig Zagged: Alice and Bob's marriage starts off well, but it runs into some problems and it seems they will separate. However, they manage to work out their issues and return to being Happily Married.
  • Averted: Alice and Bob aren't married.
  • Enforced: "All the other characters have such angsty love lives, so we'll make sure Bob and Alice have a successful marriage to give the viewers a breather."
  • Lampshaded: Alice: "Bob and I have such a wonderful marriage! He makes me the happiest woman alive!"
  • Invoked: Alice and Bob, wanting to use The Power of Love, willingly turn themselves into a happily married couple to do so.
  • Exploited: Ethan sees how happy Bob and Alice are together, and so he kidnaps Bob to blackmail Alice into helping him with his evil plans.
  • Defied: Ethan kills Alice or Bob to make sure the other is a lonely widow instead.
  • Discussed: Bob: "You know, I'm surprised how well our marriage is working out. Most of the time, heroes like us end up with a string of failed relationships."
  • Conversed: "I wish my marriage was as happy as Alice and Bob's!"
  • Deconstructed: Though Alice and Bob may be happily married & successful, that also means they're unable to properly empathize with the less fortunate.
  • Reconstructed: Alice and Bob are able to give advice to the less fortunate so that they too may achieve similarly happy and successful love lives.
  • Played For Drama: Alice and Bob, both victims of a Living Doll Collector, are forcibly made into a 'happily married' couple to satisfy their owner's madness.
