Basic Trope: A human (often, though not always, an attractive female virgin) is sacrificed to the Powers That Be, by being thrown alive into an active volcano.

  • Straight: Aerith is tossed into a volcano as a sacrifice to Pyro, the God of Fire, who has a thing for beautiful young virgins.
  • Exaggerated: Several young women are sacrificed to Pyro en masse.
  • Downplayed: Instead of a Human Sacrifice, virginal or otherwise, an animal is sacrificed in this manner.
  • Advertisement:
  • Justified: Pyro demands Human Sacrifices, and this is seen as an easy way of getting them to him.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted:
    • Aerith is merely dedicated to Pyro as his wife.
    • Aerith isn't a virgin, and so is not considered a suitable sacrifice.
    • Pyro receives animal sacrifices, not human ones.
    • Aerith is being tossed into the caldera as a punishment.
    • Aerith is killed at the foot of the volcano, not thrown into the caldera.
    • Aerith is the priestess.
    • Advertisement:
    • Women are never (or very rarely) sacrificed because a) the culture considers them to be spiritually impure, and b) Men Are the Expendable Gender, anyway.
    • Bob, the Mighty Whitey, saves Aerith at the last minute.
  • Double Subverted:
    • The "wedding" involves the "bride" being tossed into the volcano, to join the "groom" in the Realm of the Gods, or in his home.
    • By most of the gods, anyway. Pyro is not picky about his sacrificial victims' virginity. Or she's a Technical Virgin, which is good enough.
    • Except when things are desperate, and it's time to pull out the really big guns and sacrifice a human.
    • The punishment is not for Aerith, per se, but as an atonement for the sins of her entire tribe or village.
    • Not thrown in alive, anyway; after she is ritually killed on the altar stone, her body is thrown into the caldera to complete the sacrificial rites.
    • Advertisement:
    • The priestess is sacrificed to her god.
    • An occasional exception is made when it comes to sacrificing women.
    • Aerith is A-OK as a sacrifice because she either has not begun to menstruate, or is past menopause.
    • Bob tries to save Aerith from being thrown in the volcano, but they both get thrown in.
  • Parodied:
    • Aerith is sacrificed. Pyro returns her, explaining that when he said he wanted a virgin to be sacrificed, he meant a male virgin]].
    • Aerith is returned because she isn't a virgin, or she isn't attractive enough, or what have you.
    • Aerith is a total Gonk.
    • They sacrifice Aerith to the volcano god Pyro, and she is then judged by the death god... also Pyro.
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Aerith's culture does not practice human sacrifice.
  • Enforced: ???
  • Lampshaded: ???
  • Invoked: The volcano begins to rumble, and the tribe begins to worry about the wrath of Pyro.
  • Exploited:
  • Defied: The tribe does not sacrifice humans, and simply offers Pyro some bacon (or a whole pig) instead.
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
