    Book One
  • The real Murphy trying and failing to hide from the vampire hunting him.
  • A child goes missing shortly after a gruesome murder. Then the child is found dead. There is also Rebecca's fear for her own child.
  • With Dramatic Irony, the situation for the detective. They are unaware of just how much danger they are in as the antagonist hunts them, to the point even being in the same room as him, oblivious.
  • The sudden attack of the thralls. Zombie looking beings, the detective does not know what they are as the situation unfolds—and Unit Bravo (and if in the bar, Douglas) are in danger at the same time too.
  • The ambush at home to try capture the detective. It's completely unexpected and chaotic, with all but the detective and their RO being taken out, and them being forced to flee, not knowing how those left behind will fare. It's also successful in it's objective.

    Book Two
  • If Murphy escaped there is worry that We Will Meet Again might apply in the future.
  • There is a disease spreading through the population of Wayhaven that no one is recovering from, from an unknown source.
  • The Hall of Mirrors scene. First, the detective and their RO lose track of each other in it, then the detective comes across them frozen, staring at a mirror that is flashing images with them in it. And them someone comes out of the mirror.
    • The images themselves are this. Additionally so, with knowing what they are.
  • The ease with which the antagonists can appear in the detective's home, can in-universe be considered this. With some of Unit Bravo potentially voicing concern depending on character relationships.
  • The explanation for what the Trappers are. Kidnapping and trafficking supernaturals and their parts, and they are in Wayhaven.
  • The Sadistic Choice is full of this, for both the detective and the other team member present, when the detective's RO is downed and it comes down to either saving them or Sanja.
  • The implication that there might be a leak in the Agency, as information and equipment only they have gets out, and what that means.
