Funny / SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods

Go To

  • Hespera warns that the Wizard would have chosen the smartest, most capable person to be his new champion. Gilligan Cut to Billy lying on a couch saying "I'm an idiot."
  • Billy in his Shazam form seeks out therapy. He goes to a pediatrician, who was clearly not prepared for this. What really sells the gag is that the pediatrician is played by P. J. Byrne, who more mature audiences would recognize as the tone-deaf director seen in The Boys.
    • In that scene, the Annabelle doll gets a cameo seen sitting on a table. Definitely not suspicious.
  • There's something giggle-worthy about Freddy adding a Lord of the Rings t-shirt to his collection. Remember how in the first movie when he was just a nobody with a disability he wore a series of superhero logos on his chest? Now that he's a superhero he's started wearing the crest of Gondor, the inhabitants of whom are just mortal men.
  • During the bridge scene, Shazam saves a woman in a car from falling, and he overhears the song “Holding Out For a Hero” playing.
  • During the bridge rescue, Darla has a Cuteness Proximity to a basket of kittens, stops to Squee over them, and rescues them first before remembering to return for their bewildered owners.
  • The statues of the Seven Deadly Sins, the evil demons from the first film, are now treated as lair decor with graffiti and ornaments covering them.
  • During an early team meeting in the Rock of Eternity, a perpetually-burning violin (actually a Mythology Gag as it was a villain's minion’s tool in an old comic) is being used as an improvised fireplace since the Shazam family have no idea what it's actually for.
    • Later, Billy places it in the Daughters' throne room to distract them while he swoops in to save Freddy; the Daughters don't know what it is either.
  • A door in the Rock of Eternity leads to a toilet, with an accompanying stink.
  • After Anne lets Freddy walk her to class, he yells out his name to introduce himself to her.
  • Mary tells Billy "nothing lasts forever." Billy can only mutter they are sitting in something called the Rock of Eternity.
  • Billy dreams he is on a date with Wonder Woman as Shazam, and her face is obscured from the audience. When "she" turns around, Billy is met by The Wizard's face on Wonder Woman's body.
  • At the next meeting, Mary is acting extremely hungover, and it is heavily implied she was at a wild party last night and getting drunk, only for Billy to hastily change the subject when Darla kept asking questions.
  • When Pedro shows the others the Rock of Eternity's magic library, it turns out he kept it a secret because he has Steve, the magic quill, doing his homework.
  • The Shazamily learns about the sources of their power, and lampshade that Billy's a bit lacking in the "Wisdom of Solomon" department. He tries to protest this, and is repeatedly unable to pronounce "Solomon" correctly.
  • Anne tells Freddy one of her sisters is a "control freak." When Freddy brings it up, Hespera and Kalypso give Anne glares before looking to each other as if trying to figure out which one Anne was talking about.
  • Freddy shows Anne a picture of the Shazam Family on his phone and tells her that he can introduce her to “the hot one” (referring to his own superhero form). Anne believes he is talking about Mary’s superhero form. Freddy specifies “The male hot one”, after which Anne points at Eugene. Freddy says it is not him, either, and once she then moves to Pedro, he quickly notes "Well, it's all subjective anyway" before moving on.
  • Anne asks Hero Freddy how he and Freddy met. Freddy replies "ComicCon." When Anne responds "What's ComicCon?" Freddy's face falls, clearly rethinking his attraction to this girl who doesn't know what ComicCon is. Bonus points: being 6,000 year old ancient goddess who only recently got access to the human world again, she legitimately doesn't know.
  • The thing that Billy comments on about the Daughters of Atlas's appearance that weirds him out? That they all look different ages, not that they don't look anything alike or have vastly varying powers. This is fair enough considering that, age-wise, Hespera and Kalypso look like they could be mother and daughter, while the latter looks more like an older aunt relative to Anthea while the former could easily pass as her grandma.
    • Becomes a Brick Joke when Freddy takes an interest in Anthea, only for her to reveal she's over 6000 years old... before kissing him. And she's the youngest of the three.
      • Billy's quick to tell her she looks great for her age, with Mary giving her a nod.
      • And Victor and Rosa share a concerned look, with Victor voicing out loud that suddenly it's not so ok to them.
      • Meanwhile, Darla has a proud smile for her brother, and Eugene and Pedro have "my man!" kind of expressions.
  • Shazam talking to Hespera, both of them appearing to be in the middle of a cheesesteak lunch.
Shazam: Look, I might not have as much experience as you because I'm not super old like you...
    Hespera: Hmm.
Shazam: But I've seen all of The Fast and the Furious movies, lady. It's all about... FAMILY!
(looks around for his siblings to show up on cue, but there is nobody there except Shazam and Hespera)
Shazam: Family! Guys, that was the signal!
    • It's even funnier when you consider that Hespera's actress was actually in the The Fast And The Furious series.
    • The look on Hespera's face at the "super old" comment. She is clearly thinking "I know I'm Really 700 Years Old, but I'm pretty sure you just think I'm old because I'm over forty."
  • When the Daughters of Atlas order Freddy to name the other Champions, he tries to sic them on his bullies, the Breyers.
  • The Shazamily sends a letter to the Daughters of Atlas to try and reason with them, using Steve the sentient quill to write for them. However, Steve writes whatever is said out loud, including stream of consciousness thoughts and side conversations to each other, leading to a very awkwardly-written letter, with Helen Mirren's stilted, confused-sounding delivery making it even funnier:
Hespera: (reading out loud) "Dear Daughters of Atlas. Violence is not the answer. Oh, good first sentence! Thanks, Darla. We'd like to make a trade. We'll give up our powers if you give us Freddy. Add "unharmed", otherwise, they're gonna monkey's paw you. Smart, Eugene. Steve, add "unharmed". Then, like "yours tru—", no, "sincerely", "best", maybe just "signed, The Champions". Should we proofread it? Nah, Steve doesn't make mistakes, just writes what you say. Great, I feel good about this. Me too. Anyone else want a Gatorade? Do we have red?"
    Kalypso: What is this GATORADE?
    • Just the way that Kalypso takes "Gatorade" so seriously, and demands to know if it's a weapon.
    • Freddy's expression is a mix of (understandable) horror that his siblings are offering to trade their powers for him...and the same confused "WTF" look as everyone else over the horribly garbled and awkward letter, combined with some "C'mon, guys, really?" thrown in.
  • The Wizard and Freddy turn into an unlikely Straight Man and Wise Guy comedic duo.
Freddy: You are way more sarcastic than Billy said.
    • A Running Gag is the Wizard messing up Freddy's name. At one point, he calls him "Jeff", and as Freddy lampshades, he's almost certainly doing it on purpose at this point, since Anthea just addressed Freddy by his full name a minute ago.
    • As they sneak through the labyrinth (with directions from Anthea) to find the door back to the Rock of Eternity, Freddy complains that they're lost, but the Wizard insists they're not and adds, "Who's the wizard here?" Freddy replies "I don't know" and starts complaining about all of the Wizard's shortcomings...only for them to round the corner and find the door there.
Freddy: (Beat) (Defeated) You're the wizard.
      The Wizard: Thank you!
      Freddy: (muttering) Whatever.
    • Freddy wants to sneak around the Sisters' lair to steal the golden apple, pointing out that yes, he has a cane, but the Wizard's knees crack every time he straightens up. The Wizard angrily straightens and sure enough, his knees crack loudly and he gives an "okay, you got me there" shrug.
  • When the kids all confess to their parents that they're secretly superheroes, Pedro instead blurts out that he's gay, which apparently everyone already knew. The initial face of confusion from the kids indicate they both didn't expect him to say it, and didn't expect it to have been a secret. Doubles as a heartwarming moment since they're all sweet and supportive about it.
    • This makes it funny that he said "check out these guns" when he first transformed into his superhero form in the first film.
  • Darla gets the unicorns to join her and her siblings to fight against the monsters by feeding one of them Skittles. As they charge into battle and mow down enemies, sweet little Darla cries out “Taste the rainbow, motherfu—!
    • After Darla befriends the first unicorn by feeding it Skittles, it lets out a loud whinny to summon the rest of its herd, prompting Mary to comment that they'll need a lot more Skittles to befriend the entire unicorn herd.
    • The Wizard's "WTF" face watching this is priceless.
  • After Shazam-Billy is brought back to life, Rosa, watching him crash and burn while attempting to flirt with Wonder Woman, can only ask why her sons are interested in older women.
    • For her part, Diana is amused by Billy's total lack of smoothness and tells him to stick to saving the world.
    • Anthea is totally unamused at Freddy's opened-mouthed, starstruck look when Diana shows up, and upon noticing, he immediately shuts his mouth and averts his eyes. You can tell she's thinking "I may not have my powers right now, but I'm still a literal full-blooded goddess, am I not good enough for you?"
    • When Billy returns, he asks who wants powers. The whole family, including Victor and Rosa, raise their hands.
  • The mere fact that Mister Mind left Sivana waiting in jail for 2 years while he was planning their plan, only for Mister Mind to leave him behind one more time as he goes back to resume work on their plan.
    • When Sivana angrily questions why it took 2 years for him to return, Mister Mind dryly explains that he's a worm with no legs or wings or any other means of transportation besides slithering, so it takes a very LONG time for him to get anywhere.
