Fridge Brilliance

  • TONS of it, mostly on the nature of the Force and why, exactly, the near super-powered Jedi seem to get ambushed and taken advantage of so often in war.
    • Mace's first walk through Pelek Baw played hell with his Spider-Sense because malice and danger were everywhere. Now think about what happens in war...no wonder the Jedi strive for peace and serenity.
    • It also explains how the clones were able to execute Order 66 so effectively: The Jedi killed by the clones were mostly gunned down on battlefields, where their danger senses would've been overloaded anyway. Add in that the clones were just doing their jobs, with no particular malice...
    • Much, much later in the book, as Depa lies comatose, her mind "lost in infinite night", Mace, Yoda and Palpatine discuss the terrible tragedy and whether it could have been prevented. But who, truly, could have thought war could do that to a Jedi? ...Then Palpatine coughs and changes the subject. Who indeed?
    • The point that strong emotions are not evil, just unsafe for Force users. For an Übermensch like Mace, who could destroy half an army with the raw force of his anger if he chose, it's no wonder evil is addictive.
    • It also explains just why the Jedi are so cautious of attachments. Ordinary people can and will perform superhuman feats in order to rescue their loved ones, and will often tear through anything or anyone in their way. For a fully trained Jedi Knight armed with a lightsaber whose emotions are being amplified by the Force, "tear through" is no mere metaphor.
    • Mace's caution with and distrust of Anakin makes a lot more sense after we meet Kar Vastor- because Vastor is, essentially, an Anakin Skywalker who never received any training, and given the nature of the Fridge Brilliance above regarding strong emotions and Anakin's known struggles with Jedi serenity...
      • In addition, Mace thinks that Kar Vastor is someone who Mace might have wound up as had the Jedi never found him as an infant and brought him to the Temple. Hence, Mace's caution with and distrust of Anakin also stems from him seeing something of himself in Anakin, as both of them have strong emotions and enjoy fighting, only Anakin lacks Mace's self-discipline, as he hasn't had nearly as much experience and training as Mace has had.
