Foreshadowing / Mr. Robot

Go To

Mr. Robot as a series is distinctive for having most of its narrative planned out in advance. As a result, a lot of its critical plot points are foreshadowed, sometimes whole seasons in advance.

Because of this, expect major spoilers for the entire series throughout this page. Per policy, only those relating to season four will be tagged.

     Mr. Robot
The nature of Mr. Robot's true identity is meticulously telegraphed throughout season one.
  • When Mr. Robot first tries to get Elliot's attention on the subway, Elliot is the only one to take notice.
  • While staking out Pierre Loti, Elliot sees Mr. Robot interacting with the Men in Black, who are already implied to be delusions.
  • Mr. Robot smokes in a public transit, and Elliot is the only one to protest.
  • When Romero greets Elliot and Mr. Robot at the Fun Society arcade, Romero only acknowledges Elliot's presence.
  • As Elliot and Mr. Robot communicate, Darlene stares at Elliot, visibly unnerved.
  • Mr. Robot appearing at Allsafe and threatening Elliot into working for him again, in view of the employees working there. It may seem like an Unusually Uninteresting Sight (with Mr Robot not even using an ID card) but after The Reveal, it makes a lot of sense.
  • Mr Robot tells Elliot after Romero and Mobley go for recon: "I will never leave you", which seems odd to say for a boss.
  • Elliot and Mr. Robot never interact with other people independently, and Elliot is often pushed into the background when Mr. Robot is leading a conversation.
    • By extension, later episodes in the season show Mr. Robot being the only one present in certain exchanges, conveniently while Elliot is AWOL in the wake of Shayla's death.
  • Despite Mr. Robot being a ghost in the digital world, Elliot is still able to find him somehow at the pier.
    • In the same scene, Elliot doesn't flinch when Mr. Robot touches him.
  • During the Steel Mountain operation, Romero nor Mobley acknowledge Mr. Robot. Not once. Elliot does, however.
    • The blooper reel even shows that Ron Cephas Jones and Azhar Khan (Romero and Mobley's actors respectively) were specifically instructed to ignore Christian Slater.
  • Mr. Robot showing up out of nowhere at Elliot's apartment, fully aware of Fernando Vera's plot.

     Elliot's predicament in season two
Where Elliot actually is during most of season two is hinted at many times.
  • That Elliot would even choose to live with his mother, who is responsible for much of his childhood trauma.
    • Apart from when he gets up and when he turns in for the night, Elliot never interacts with her.
  • Gideon's aggressiveness when he confronts Elliot at his "home".
  • Elliot's routine is too strict; he wakes up at the same time every day, eats breakfast with the same individual, performs the same chores, eats lunch with the same individual, hangs out at the same basketball court (and only the same basketball court), eats dinner with the same individual, regularly attends church meetings, and then sleeps at the same time. In that order.
  • Ray being able to peacefully quell a confrontation on the basketball court, with Leon even respectfully addressing him as sir.
  • At the restaurant where Leon and Elliot eat, the same people from the basketball court and the church group can be seen working in the kitchen.
  • Ray somehow comes into possession of Elliot's journal despite it being thrown away where the church group meetings are held.
  • The heavily regimented way in which people visit Elliot.
  • Gideon, Angela and Darlene meet Elliot at (only) his home, while his meeting with other people are everywhere else.
    • The said meetings are carefully positioned so that Elliot would always face the door, while the others are behind the wall grating.
  • The room where Elliot is thrown into after discovering Ray's side business.
  • All doors slam shut with a "clang" and an unusual echo.
  • Whenever Elliot is shown walking outside, the residential gates in the background resemble bars.

    Elliot's predicament in the finale
Who Elliot's third personality actually is.
  • Elliot, in one of his monologues, specifically states that "we" were born yesterday.
  • In one of his hallucinations, Angela also states "we" were born a month ago and adds, Isn't it obvious? You're not Elliot. You are -
  • The series subtly switches the fourth-wall narrations to Mr. Robot, as Elliot tones down his anarchic tendencies.
  • Elliot "forgetting" about Darlene despite her being an important part of his life.
  • Elliot can change his perception to us when he was in prison, not unlike Mr. Robot.
  • When Elliot becomes too angry with Darlene, she says, "Get away from me, you psycho!"
  • The Men in Black following Elliot don't actually harm him, unlike Tyrell's agents come to escort him later on, when again, they are implied to be illusions.
  • Mr Robot implying a calm eternal sleep for Elliot in exchange of complete control of him.
  • Elliot's "mother" and his "younger self" discussing "he" should take over the truth.
  • Despite Mr. Robot's initial reason to exist is to be a protector for Elliot from his father, he begins harming him when Elliot goes against his objectives.
  • The skyscraper in which Elliot is introduced and the series begins is the same one Mr. Robot and the other personalities use to talk about Elliot's denial.
  • Elliot's insistence to fight after the Deus Group is taken down.
