Door on the Left as You Leave the Elevator is a 1988 French comedy film directed by Édouard Molinaro.

Yann Ducoudray (Pierre Richard) is a painter who pines for the married Florence Arnaud (Fanny Cottençon). They meet at an art exhibition of his and Florence is charmed enough by Yann to accept an invitation into his apartment. Now, Yann lives in an apartment building next door to a belligerent couple consisting of Éva (Emmanuelle BĂ©art) and Boris (Richard Bohringer). On the same day Florence is to visit Yann, Éva ends up locked outside of her apartment and goes to Yann for help. Florence and Boris find them together and the misunderstandings keep piling up from there.

Tropes:

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Boris gets frightfully enraged at seeing Éva with other men, threatening to beat them up, and at one point he trashes Yann's apartment because he's convinced Éva is sleeping with him.
  • Juggling Loaded Guns: Yann owns a pistol and a lighter modelled to look exactly like it. He has no intention of hurting anyone, but he frequently waves the pistol around and points it at people believing it's the lighter, which leads to some misfiring. Boris gets grazed by one bullet.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Due to finding Éva almost naked in Yann's apartment, Florence thinks he's a two-timer. For the same reason Boris becomes convinced that Éva must be having an affair with Yann.
  • Naked People Trapped Outside: Éva gets locked out of her apartment while she's in her underwear and begs for Yann to help her by using the balcony to cross over. Since Yann is expecting Florence to arrive any minute, he really doesn't want a semi-naked woman with him, but is compelled to help anyway.
