Swapping Genres is a one-shot crossover between Once Upon a Time and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story is an AU where the Avengers exist in the Land Without Magic and keep showing up to help out with major events from the show. Meanwhile, both Emma and Regina get more and more annoyed at their unwanted guests, with Regina especially taking a dislike to Captain America. At the same time, the Marvel heroes take a special interest in Emma and Regina's blossoming feelings for each other.

The story was written by coalitiongirl on August 3, 2019, and can be found on Archive of Our Own here

Swapping Genres contains examples of:

  • Adapted Out: Emma and Regina's canon love interests, Captain Hook and Robin Hood, are nowhere to be found in the story. While Hook is mentioned in a passing Take That! at the very idea of him being a character in the show and to say that he doesn't actually exist, Robin Hood is not even given a passing mention.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: One part of the story mentions that when Emma attempts to take on Black Widow while drunk, she barely gets a punch in before Black Widow easily knocks her out cold.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: After finding out that Neal is Rumplestiltskin's son, Emma gets drunk to get over being lied to. Coincidentally, this leads to Emma getting a Curb-Stomp Battle from Black Widow.
  • Everyone Can See It: Almost all the characters, particularly the Avengers, can tell that Emma and Regina are into each other. Even Groot comments that it can seem like the two like each other.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: After becoming the Dark One, Emma visits Regina's house and finds her hanging out with Captain Marvel. This leads to Emma becoming instantly jealous of Carol, a feeling that continues even after she discovers that Carol is dating someone already.
  • Irrational Hatred: Regina instantly hates Captain America before even meeting him for little reason. It's pointed out that just mentioning him is enough to make her angry.
  • Lighter and Softer: This story is far more lighthearted than the actual Once Upon a Time series, with the multiple instances of rape being removed and being far more quippy.
  • Shipper on Deck: Almost every hero in the story instantly ships Emma and Regina. Ant-Man says the two have something special and everyone encourages Emma to admit her feelings for Regina even after Emma becomes the Dark One.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: When Emma meets Groot, she comments that she must have spent too much time around the Avengers and fairytale characters, as she doesn't even flinch at the fact that a tree just talked to her.
