Ad Mortem is a Hunger Games fan fiction written by Fan Fiction user Little Knight Mik. It's set during the Fourth Quarter Quell, wherein 12 District children are reaped, followed by 12 Capitol tributes.

The fic is a SYOT (standing for Submit Your Own Tribute) and follows an alternate universe in which Katniss and Peeta do not win, victory instead going to Cato and pushing all of the outer Districts further into poverty.

The following tropes appear in this work:

  • Anyone Can Die: In the Hunger Games? We sure hope so!
  • Bury Your Gays: The fact that a majority of the cast within the arena isn't straight makes this a given.
  • Cain and Abel: The whole lead up to Knight's death plays out like this between Knight and Cetronia. Cetronia is the younger, more popular career that the Capitol adores for her beauty and strength, playing the role of Abel, while Knight is the older, overshadowed career who's desperate to take attention from Cetronia and stop her from winning, playing the role of Cain. The dynamic is surprisingly turned on its head when Cetronia is the one to kill Knight during their bloodbath confrontation.
  • Cat Girl: Cirrus, the District 7 escort, wants to be this.
  • Censored Child Death: Subverted. Luvenia watches the bloodbath and the deaths that occur with horrific detail.
  • Cornered Rattlesnake: After being literally cornered in the elevator by Gossamer and then threatened into giving up winning by the President, there's really not a lot left for Calico to keep himself grounded.
  • Crapsack World: Of the immutable variety.
  • Deadly Game: It's a given with the Hunger Games.
  • Dramatic Unmask
    • Played straight with Calico during his private session.
    • Subverted by Quatra, who all but implies she was spying on Octavia back in District 10 during her interview. Naturally, only Octavia catches onto this fact.
  • Fat Bastard: Felix Brough, the District 2 mentor.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Quite a few of the alliances.
  • Gayngst: We've got a lot of gay characters and a lot of angst.
  • A Glass in the Hand: Octavia embodies this trope during the interviews.
  • Ho Yay: Quite a bit with some of the characters and their alliances
    • Luxor and Calico become very intimate following the interviews, making Avita uncomfortable by their PDA, despite never quite suggesting a relationship between the two.
    • Les Yay: In the case of how Ham and Octavia's alliance is interpreted by Gossamer.
      • There's a chance it might be something more, though...
Gossamer: Octavia, sweetie, just say you're attracted to Ham and get it over with.
  • Human Shield: Rye used her District partner as one to win her Games.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: How Malvolia gets through private sessions, apparently.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Quite a few tributes become this for their allies. Best examples: Luxor to Calico and Adrianne to Simi.
  • President Evil: President Celestia Snow. And she's considered worse than her grandfather by the Districts.
  • Worth Living For: Charlotte details her wife as being this for her during her Games, and tells Luxor to look for something similar once he's reaped.
