Go To

A Crew for a King is a One Piece fanfic by Fallen Angel Codester which diverges from canon at the end of the Arlong Arc, when Nojiko, Johnny and Yosaku all decide to join the Straw Hats on their journey. The story unfolds from there, as more changes big and small occur as a result of the presence of these three.

It is currently ongoing, and can be found on FanFiction.Net here.

Tropes

  • Adaptation Personality Change: In an effort to avert Sanji's canonical Flanderization, here he's presented as only being a simp to female Straw Hats, instead managing to keep his cool just fine around other women.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • Nojiko, Johnny and Yosaku all decide to travel on with the Straw Hats after Arlong's defeat.
    • Marianne aka Miss Golden Week defects to the Straw Hats and travels with them as a way of getting home to Water 7.
    • Vivi ends up joining the Straw Hats when they leave Alabasta.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Igaram's reaction when he learns that Vivi has left Alabasta with the Straw Hats.
  • Death by Adaptation: On Little Garden, Mr. 3 traps the Unluckies in wax so they can’t return to Crocodile and reveal the agents failed to kill Vivi. As a result of being trapped, they're unable to escape when Broggy and Dorry decide to eat them.
  • Enemy Mine:
    • After learning of Crocodile's actions and that Vivi is working with the Straw Hats, Smoker and Tashigi ally with them to end the civil war and defeat Baroque Works.
    • When Baroque Works' conspiracy is exposed, the rebel and royal armies team up to fight them.
  • For Want Of A Nail:
    • The story diverges from canon when Nojiko, Johnny, and Yosaku all decide to join the Straw Hats at the end of the Arlong Park Arc.
    • Thanks to being more of a Combat Pragmatist, Nojiko convinces Usopp of the necessity of embracing his sniper role much more fully than he did canonically, leading to him buying several guns while in Lougetown and using them in battle instead of his slingshot. His first time really using them is saving Luffy from Buggy’s attempt to execute him, rather than him being saved by a Bolt of Divine Retribution.
    • After Little Garden, the Baroque Works agents pursue the Straw Hats to Drum Island. When they're defeated again there, Miss Golden Week takes the opportunity to defect to the pirates, while the others flee and subsequently get arrested by Smoker.
    • Thanks to learning from the captured agents that Vivi is working with pirates, and Nojiko's negotiating skills, Smoker is willing to work with the Straw Hats to defeat Crocodile. This means the group is big enough to split up and go after both their goals at the same time, with Luffy taking the best fighters to attack Rainbase, while the others go with the Marines to try and talk down the rebel army. As a result of the latter, Vivi is present when Mr. 2 tries to frame her father and rile up the rebels into attacking the capital, exposing the imposter and cementing the rebels' decision to help fight Baroque Works.
    • Because Robin has to more directly step in to save Luffy and the others during their first fight against Crocodile, the crew realizes she's trustworthy fairly quickly. As such, she's able to openly leave Alabasta with them, rather than stowing away.
    • Becoming utterly disgusted by the World Government's decision to pin the blame for their failures in Alabasta on the Straw Hats, Vivi decides to join the crew long-term in order to use her influence to expose government corruption elsewhere.
    • Thanks to Viv's calming influence, the Straw Hats never get in a fight with Masira's crew, Luffy instead using Exact Words to apologize for attacking them without having to swallow his pride and actually say sorry. This later also spares them a fight with Shoujou.
    • Since the Marines assume that Vivi was kidnapped by the Straw Hats, Luffy's post-Alabasta bounty is 10 million berries higher than canon.
    • The larger crew size means that there's not quite enough room aboard the Going Merry for everyone's comfort. This leads to an argument about the possibility of getting a new ship while on Jaya, where canonically they didn't even consider the idea until they reached Water 7 and realized that the Merry was literally falling apart.
    • Rather than just Luffy going after Bellamy, Zoro and Sanji tag along, the former dealing with Sarquiss while the latter handles the rest of the Mooks.
    • Marianne is able to calm down Wyper with her paints during the Straw Hats' first encounter with him, allowing them to restrain and interrogate him. This leads to them learning about the entire situation with Enel and coming into conflict with him without meeting Conis.
  • The Gunslinger: Under the more pragmatic Nojiko's influence, Usopp becomes this in order to more fully embrace his sniper role and be better able to protect the crew.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Marianne, aka Miss Golden Week, abandons Baroque Works and joins the Straw Hats in order to get away from the criminal lifestyle and get a ride back to her home on Water 7.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: The Straw Hats are this during the fight at Rainbase, as the locals view them as rebels attacking a national hero, something Crocodile is happy to gloat about.
  • Number Two: Nojiko steps into the role of quartermaster when she joins the Straw Hats, managing the day-to-day acts that Luffy finds too boring to pay attention to, effectively running the ship for him outside of battle.
  • Older Than They Look: Marianne is 16, but looks significantly younger due to her shortness. She's quite annoyed by this.
  • Pretender Diss: When fighting Sarquiss, Zoro says he doesn't need to know his name because he'll forget it as soon as they part ways. He also heavily critiques Sarquiss' swordsmanship throughout the fight, clearly not remotely impressed.
  • Red Baron: When the Straw Hats' post-Alabasta bounties are posted, Johnny and Yosaku are dubbed "Sword of the Sea" and "Sword of the Earth", respectfully, while Nojiko gains the epithet "Hawkshot".
  • Seen It All: When contemplating the fact that a fight might break out over Luffy and Blackbeard's ridiculous food argument, Nojiko notes how quickly she's gotten used to this sort of thing.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: Usopp says this when telling the crew members who joined after him about Kaya.
  • Ship Tease: Vivi becomes quite flustered whenever she’s close to Kohza.
  • Villain Team-Up: When the Baroque Works agents arrive on Drum Island looking for the Straw Hats, they encounter Wapol, and quickly strike a deal where they'll help him reclaim his castle in exchange for his help capturing Vivi.
