Captain Marvel #1 cover by Stephen Segovia

Captain Marvel is an October 2023 ongoing comic from Marvel Comics, written by Alyssa Wong with art by Jan Bazaldua.

It is a relaunch of Captain Marvel (Marvel Comics) following the conclusion of Captain Marvel (Kelly Thompson) in June 2023 and Ann Nocenti's Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest mini-series (which will be published in the interim between the two runs). It will pick up Carol Danvers' storyline as she faces new threats and receives a new supporting cast.

Captain Marvel provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Art Evolution: In addition to updating Carol's costume, Jen Bartel has also tweaked Carol's character model from it's Thompson-era look (such as a new hairstyle).
  • Braids of Action: While Carol retains her Kelly Thompson-era long hair, Jen Bartel's updated character design shows it's now been braided. As of the pre-release, it's unknown if there's an in-story explanation for the change.
  • Costume Evolution: The initial press release reveals Jamie McKelvie's design, which debuted with Kelly Sue Deconnick's run in 2012, has been formally retired with Thompson's run (or at least for now). Carol's costume has been redesigned by Jen Bartel (and influenced by her Hellfire Gala 2023 design for Carol). As of the pre-release, it's unknown if there's an in-story explanation for the costume changeover.
  • Eldritch Abomination: The Undone, yet another one of the embodiments of entropy that exist within the Marvel Universe.
  • Genius Loci: The Last Matter Fortress. It initially just seems to be reactive, but then it starts attacking Carol and Yuna by shapeshifting into Blastaar and Black Cat.
  • Opponent Switch: The Last Matter Fortress fights Carol and Yuna as their equals, Blastaar and Black Cat. Carol and Yuna get around this by using the Nega-Bands to swap places too quickly for the Last Matter Fortress to react, allowing Carol to easily knock out the fake Black Cat.
  • The Reveal: The Omen is Yuna's classmate and crush, Leonore.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Genis-Vell, who was previously Captain Marvel, is brutally killed by new villain Omen in the first issue. This reinforces Omen as a threat, as well as setting up the new status-quo by passing Genis-Vell's powerful nega-bands on to Yuna.
  • Swap Teleportation: As seen in their previous appearances, the nega-bands can swap their wearer for another person. When Yuna's wearing them, this swaps her with Carol.
  • Variant Cover: John Tyler Christopher will be contributing negative space covers. The press release also reveals further variants and artists will be announced in the coming months.
