The 8 year old eldest Mackenzie brother- Big Brother Instinct: He's protective of Davy to the point of acting hostile to anyone who comes near him.
- Fantastic Racism: He initially takes after his grandfather when it comes to his attitude towards Dutch settlers, especially the Hoofts.
- Oh, Crap!: He has a brief moment of this when Davy falls into a stream.
- He quickly realises the trouble that awaits him when Davy warns him their grandfather and school teacher are looking for him.
- Parental Substitute: He is this to Davy and tries to be the same for Mr Hooft's infant daughter.
- Promoted to Parent: As a result of Conveniently an Orphan.
David (Davy) Mackenzie

Harry's dog-obsessed 5 year old brother- Big Brother Worship: He seldom leaves Harry's side.
- The Determinator: He wishes to be able to walk again straight after falling into a stream and injuring his knee but is advised not to for at least of couple of days.
- Do Not Call Me "Paul": He thinks people who call him David don't like him.
- Oh, Crap!: He has such a moment when he bumps into his grandfather and school teacher though it is much worse for Harry since he's the one they're looking for.
- The Un-Favourite: He feels like this when people call him David.
