* TaintedByThePreview: ''Return to Silent Hill'''s announcement has a lot of fans worried because Creator/ChristopheGans is once again in creative control. The plot of ''VideoGame/SilentHill2'' is built like a house of cards and depends very heavily on the symbolism, events, and characterization all working in tandem with each other, while Gans has shown past form for randomly tossing in iconic imagery and making unnecessary changes to the story seemingly just for the hell of it.

** Laura of ''2'' is widely despised for being a deliberate and highly unpleasant SpoiledBrat, even if there is a plot-relevant reason for her to be as nasty as she is toward James for most of the story.
** Just being a murderous and sanctimonious religious fanatic (an all but ''inherently'' unlikable character archetype) would be enough as is, but Claudia earned the fandom's everlasting hatred by [[spoiler: ordering the death of Harry Mason, Heather's beloved father and the protagonist of the original game]]. Heather is eventually able to pity Claudia in spite of this, but not many fans share in her magnanimity.

* UnfortunateImplications: The decision to gender-flip Harry into Rose was explained by the creative team as stemming from the fact that the character's motivations felt very "feminine" to them. Many critics including Dena from ''WebVideo/LeeAndDena'' [[https://youtu.be/KB1vKSA4fgs?t=581 took issue with the change]] as it played into outdated gender roles and implied that a man looking for his missing child was unrealistic. Dena further noted that the executives meddled in the production to increase the importance of Christopher (Sean Bean's character) because they didn't feel that a female lead would sell.

* ScapegoatCreator: Until around 2015, an easy way to generate a FlameWar among ''Silent Hill'' [[BrokenBase fans]] was to ask who caused the series' DorkAge: Tomm Hulett, or Creator/{{Konami}}. To one half of the fanbase, Hulett, the man who took over as the director of the series after [[ToughActToFollow the original development team]], Team Silent, disbanded following [[VideoGame/SilentHill4 the fourth game]], was responsible for everything that went wrong with the series from ''VideoGame/SilentHillOrigins'' onward, from questionable creative decisions to changes in gameplay mechanics to the PortingDisaster that was the ''Silent Hill HD Collection''. To the other half, Hulett has been the only person keeping the series alive, and it was Konami that broke up Team Silent and passed the franchise off from studio to studio while destroying everything that made the original games great. The only thing they both agreed upon is that the series went downhill after Team Silent broke up, and that ''someone'' is to blame.\\\
However, the Hulett-bashing has mostly gone dormant and shifted to a focus on Konami ever since the ''VideoGame/SilentHills'' debacle. Now, pretty much ''everybody'' agrees that ''that'' mess was Konami's fault (as well as pretty much all the other messes), especially in the wake of their abandonment of most AAA game development in 2015-16 to focus on mobile gaming and pachinko machines. While Konami's fraught relationship with Creator/HideoKojima, the director of ''Silent Hills'', tends to be portrayed as a one-way street a bit too often (Kojima had gone seriously overbudget on ''VideoGame/MetalGearSolidVThePhantomPain''[='=]s TroubledProduction, putting him very much in Konami's bad graces), Konami's announcement of a ''Silent Hill'' pachinko machine just months after they canceled ''Silent Hills'' read like a deliberate insult towards the franchise and its fans -- especially coming from the prior ''HD Collection'' debacle.
