* BrokenBase: Rodney Caston's departure from the strip drove a wedge deep into the fanbase that ''would'' persist to this day if the comic still updated frequently enough for anyone to care.

* * UnintentionalPeriodPiece: The early years of the comic greatly reflect the early-2000s anime and video game fan community that it was created in. There are many references to works and genres that are no longer popular, and in particular, LeetSpeak - at the time, a genuinely common aspect of gamer culture - has long since become DeaderThanDisco.

* CreativeDifferences: This is the official reason for Rodney Caston leaving the strip. The reality is far more complicated.
** We don't know exactly what happened, and we never will because both of them signed [=NDAs=]. The few details we've gotten from both of them over the years suggest that Rodney got bored with writing the strip pretty early on, leaving more details to Fred, then disapproving of the direction Fred wanted to take things; the last strip Rodney wrote by himself (aside from a couple of one-offs several months later) was, ironically, [[http://megatokyo.com/strip/132 a strip showing the different ways their characters viewed the world.]][[labelnote:±]] It's not a coincidence that immediately after this strip ran, Megatokyo switched to its now-standard chapter format.[[/labelnote]] Although Rodney wasn't contributing much of anything to the series, his name was still on the masthead and he still owned half of the copyright, something Fred came to resent. ** A lot of people actually enjoyed the shift to a more drama-based series but lost interest later when the updates became ridiculously infrequent and the story more difficult to follow strip-to-strip.

** Also Fred Gallagher, according to [[http://xkcd.com/142/ XKCD]]. Though the implication here is that they find him so pathetic that he likely couldn't stand the parodies and mockery they subjected some other webcomics to. ...Unless that's the mockery.

Then she gave birth several weeks early, as a result of those preexisting issues. ''Then'' their son had some serious health issues (common for preemies). '''Then''' Sarah was diagnosed with lymphoma. '''THEN''' Fred started having heart problems. (And '''then''' their cat suddenly died.) Seriously, nothing good seems to happen to the guy. On top of all that, there are many people who hate him so much that his bad luck is cause for celebration.

While the author's rant makes it clear he is horrified about the situation, the looks on Piro's and Largo's face can be interpreted anywhere from slight disappointment to StunnedSilence to [[DullSurprise dull shock]]. The whole thing is easy to misinterpret if you read it hurriedly, so in the end, the reader is left to judge. [[RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgement Let nothing else be said]].

* ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch: There are several extremely negative reviews of MT that focus entirely on the plot and art around comic 300 (not long after Rodney left), and appear to be unaware that there's close to ''a thousand'' more story pages by now, with substantial changes in art and characterization.
