** Hyperion Peaks in ''Dark Crusade''. A BaselessMission where you lead a force of warriors to take out three separate enemy bases, bases and all unit-producing buildings, with limited resources and no upgrades, repairs (repairing vehicles/buildings consumes power and you cannot build generators), with no upgrades or heavy weapons. The only reason to play this level is because it gives the best ability (prefabricated buildings) and with the mitigating factor being that you generally get two relic units.Relic units, some powerful vehicles, and infantry to use. The difficulty of this mission wildly varies depending on what the player's faction is, with some factions being clearly favored (e.g. Necrons have powerful infantry and get two Monoliths which self repair for free) and others getting nearly useless compositions to struggle with[[note]]Chaos doesn't even ''get a Relic unit'' and has to make do with vehicles that cannot be upgraded and infantry that costs a lot of power to reinforce. The Eldar get one Relic unit and very expensive infantry as their heavy hitters[[/note]]. The final cherry on top is that Hyperion Peaks is usually held by the Orkz, who will have a ton of buildings that you need to destroy and can obviously bury the player under unending hordes of infantry and vehicles if they aren't attacked quickly enough.

** Most of the Stronghold missions in ''Dark Crusade'' and ''Soultstorm''. All these missions start you off with the same low-tier base and tech level every other map does, while the enemy has several bases covering most of the map, and will send a huge early game rush that will basically slaughter you if you don't at least have an Honor Guard unit or two. Worse still, said rush can consist of vehicles in some Strongholds, and anti-vehicle weapons aren't available at the starting tech level.
*** The Tau Stronghold in ''Dark Crusade''. It has a stronger early game rush than the other maps, the army of Fire Warriors throughout are all fully upgraded from the start and there are two command posts on opposite ends of the map that will spam high level units if you leave them alone and can render the map unwinnable if you do. They also have several ranged units (especially Stealthsuits) positioned at hard-to-reach locations, which may sometimes require Teleporters or Jump to reach, across the map to further complicate everything. They can still be hit with ranged attack, but the locations themselves provide light cover in general and reduce the ranged damage dealt.
*** The Necron Stronghold in ''Dark Crusade'', because you're dead if you don't have any anti-vehicle Honor Guards to deal with the early rush. In addition, the rest of the level has a set of beacons that do things like make the Necron units invisible or mind control your vehicles.

level. This can get worse if the territories for your faction's anti-vehicle Honor Guard are on the other side of the map, forcing you to slog through attacking and defending maps just to get a vital unit.
*** The Tau Stronghold in ''Dark Crusade''. It has a stronger early game rush than the other maps, the army of Fire Warriors throughout are all fully upgraded from the start and there are two command posts on opposite ends of the map that will spam high level units from both the Mont'ka and Kauyon unit trees if you leave them alone and can render the map unwinnable if you do.do. This translates into GlassCannon ranged powerhouses attacking from the west and the Tau's Kroot units (Kroot, Krootox, and Kroot Hounds) swarming you from the east with Fire Warrior backup. They also have several ranged units (especially Stealthsuits) positioned at hard-to-reach locations, which may sometimes require Teleporters or Jump to reach, across the map to further complicate everything. *** The Necron Stronghold in ''Dark Crusade'', because you're dead if you don't have any anti-vehicle Honor Guards to deal with the early rush.rush; a Tomb Spyder will activate itself next to your headquarters within a few minutes, and it will absolutely destroy your buildings and kick you out of the level if you don't have an answer for it. In addition, the rest of the level has a set of beacons that do things like make the Necron units invisible or mind control your vehicles. You will also lose the mission if your commander dies at any point, which can force you to outright bench them and unable to use them if they don't have enough Wargear to keep themselves healthy.

** The Necron Stronghold mission in ''Dark Crusade'', particularly its introduction. You get to watch a squad of some of your weakest infantry retreating from a horde of Necrons uphill, their resolve broken. [[HopeSpot They make it to a passage that looks to be the way out]], only for a horde of Flayed Ones to emerge from the ground infront of them. Your men are quickly surrounded by their pursuers. Thankfully, the camera pans away before we see the massacre. [[LudicrousGibs Most of it.]]

* CommonKnowledge: There was a very wide assumption and agreement across the playerbase that the Imperial Guard were the canonical winners of ''Soulstorm'', with many believing WordOfGod to have confirmed it, perhaps partially due to General Stubbs being one of the series' biggest {{Ensemble Darkhorse}}s. However, this was never the case; ''Soulstorm'''s canon victor was only confirmed in ''VideoGame/DawnOfWarIII'', where it turned out to be the Orks. Oh, and despite what the [[MemeticMutation memes]] say, Stubbs never "lost" 100 Baneblades; they were shipped off-world on purpose, as Kaurava was a system where Baneblades were produced and then shipped away to serve in other sectors.

* HesJustHiding: Whenever a character who's popular gets killed, this inevitably happens. This is why the fanon ending to ''Retribution'' is basically cobbled together from all the faction endings, where the Blood Ravens win (confirmed by ''VideoGame/DawnOfWarIII'' to have happened), but Eliphas gets away and becomes a Daemon Prince, Bluddflagg gets his krooza, the Eldar get Taldeer's soul stone, and so on, since every other ending would result in the whole gang except one faction dying. Araghast is also a victim of this; one video shows him being "acquired" by the Blood Ravens instead of being killed.

Inverted in one minor instance, as Vance "Motherfucking" Stubbs is also known for having lost [[AncestralWeapon 100 Baneblades]]. (He didn't really lose them, but that's how the fans like to think of it.) [[spoiler:And until Dawn Of War III officially confirmed that Gorgutz conquered Kaurava it was thought Stubbs won.]]

** Perhaps king of ''Soulstorm'' cheese is the Imperial Guard intro where the Commander lost '''one hundred Baneblades''' in a case of bad timing. You mean the incredibly rare and valuable city block-sized supertank that [[LostTechnology the Imperium doesn't know how to build anymore]] and any general would be supremely lucky to command one in their lifetimes, that Baneblade? [[EpicFail HOW DID YOU MANAGE TO LOSE 100 OF THEM!?]]

** Soulstorm itself was the butt of many jokes over the game's writing and acting as well as the inherent balancing issues due to it being rushed (to the point that the outsourced developers were defunct when the game's released). Many years after its release, it is used as the base for overhaul mods ([[https://www.moddb.com/mods/unification-mod-dawn-of-war-soulstorm such as this ambitious Unification mod]]) as Soulstorm has the most content of the first Dawn of War series, not to mention apart from several balance issues introduced by the new races (which modders are quick to fix), the game still maintained the solid Dawn of War gameplay.
* WatchItForTheMeme: Pretty much the main reason to play ''Soulstorm'' is to watch General Stubbs [[WhatTheHellHero lose 100 Baneblades]], Commander Boreale give his [[SpaceMarine SPESS MAHREENS]] speech, and [[EpicFail FEHL THE EMPRAH]], and Chaos Lord Carron rant about [[AwesomePersonnelCarrier METAL BAWKSES]].

** Due to the way the ''Retribution'' campaign is designed, every playable race can experience every bit of mission dialog. This includes the [[HordeOfAlienLocusts Tyranids]], which leads to the rather odd sight of enemies letting out long-winded dying monologues directed at the [[TheVoiceless Hive Lord]], as if they expect it to understand or even care for what they're saying.

** No mission got as many requests for help in Dark Crusade as trying to take Hyperion Peak with Chaos. The level is actually fairly easy to beat with Necrons (in their case - extremely easy but time-consuming), Space Marines, Eldar, Tau and IG while Orks have to deal with some annoyance. These factions start off with 2 Relic units and a lot of other powerful units and also some upgrades (Space Marines can upgrade many units to get Assault Cannons while the Necron Overlord can get a resurrection orb). Chaos gets a unique situation, they don't get any Relic units. So instead of a pair of Bloodthirsters, they instead have a single Demon Prince which is far weaker. And it gets worse... [[note]]your forces are a single Heretic, 6 Predator tanks, and a crap-ton of Cultists and Possessed Marines. Normally Chaos is a powerhouse in melee, unfortunately they're fighting Orks who are their equal initially and superior to unupgraded Chaos in that department. Then you find that your Cultists and Possessed Marines don't get their all important upgrades (no Possessed Marines roasting Orks alive with their flame breath), so all melee fights will be to your disadvantage. Outshooting the Orks won't work well either, as you lack Chaos Space Marines and Obliterators, Horrors and Defilers (so you have no artillery to break up infantry blobs). Basically the way to survive Hyperion Peaks as Chaos is to get a few good Honor Guard units, make a quick assault on the Ork tank base, protect your tanks and take advantage of many Chaos units having a fast health recovery. You'll get the victory, but expect tremendous casualties. [[/note]]

** Each campaign in ''Retribution'' (sans Tyranids') allows you to choose whether you tag along a hero on your next mission or take an Honor Guard unit in their place. However, once this option becomes available (mission four onwards), there is really no point to bring heroes with you (unless they're a healer), since there are far more downsides to it compared to a situation where you take the Honor Guard. If a hero is incapacitated, you have to pay in requisition points to revive him, while an Honor Guard unit, if killed, can be replaced for free. Heroes do have quite a few useful abilities, but many of those abilities give your regular units various neat bonuses instead when a hero in question is ''not'' present in the battlefield. Moreover, replacing heroes with Honor Guard increases your population cap, allowing you to bring in far more reinforcements. Therefore, once you've done with first few missions where using heroes is mandatory, you will most likely never use them again.

CS doesn't allow pure complaints. WAI is Flame Bait. CP must explain how audiences hate them such they count as The Scrappy which disallows group examples.

** While ''Retribution'' was the first expansion for ''[=DoW=] II'' where every single faction had their own campaign, the fact that ''every campaign was almost identical'', just with different justifications for why each faction was doing each mission and a few minor differences on a few levels, disappointed many players. For example, the WhatAnIdiot entry down below only happened because the Eldar had to fight through the stages where the Biel-Tan Eldar are the designated enemies just like everyone else, regardless of how little sense it made.

* CreatorsPet: Apparently, many of the developers of the first ''Dawn of War'' were Eldar fans, which goes a long way to explaining why they were so [[GameBreaker flagrantly broken]].
** Despite that, they are usually portrayed as losers in the story.

* MemeticBadass: Vance "Motherfucking" Stubbs, according to the /tg/ section of Website/FourChan. Inverted in one minor instance, as Vance "Motherfucking" Stubbs is also known for having [[WhatAnIdiot lost]] [[AncestralWeapon 100 Baneblades]]. (He didn't really lose them, but that's how the fans like to think of it.) [[spoiler:And until Dawn Of War III officially confirmed that Gorgutz conquered Kaurava it was thought Stubbs won.]]

Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

** [[spoiler:The pre-ascension speech from Azariah Kyras in ''Retribution'']] cranks this UpToEleven, where he talks about slaughtering billions of people in Khorne's name. The passion and fury he puts into it makes it even scarier, [[spoiler:moreso quoting the Arch-Traitor Horus Luprecal [[ChewingTheScenery with total aplomb at the end thereof]].]]

* DifficultySpike:
** In ''Winter Assault'' each campaign is less then half the length of the original (5 levels each in ''Winter Assault'', 11 in the original), but the later levels are equally difficult, i.e, difficulty shoots up very quickly.
** The fourth level of both ''WA'' campaigns deserves a mention, as in the Order version you are under almost constant attack by infinitely spawning enemies and in the Disorder version it's a race against time to stop ''both'' enemies completing their completely independant victory objective causing you to lose automatically.

Uncanny Valley is IUEO now and the subjective version has been split; cleaning up misuse and ZCE in the process

* UncannyValley:
** Captain Angelos' sudden change of voice for ''Dawn of War II'' can cause this in two different directions. If your introduction to him was in the sequel, the return of Creator/PaulDobson for ''Chaos Rising'' and beyond can be very jarring. However, if you remembered the deep, rumbling voice he had in the original ''Dawn of War'', the switch to Creator/BrianDobson sounds just as wrong.
** In the intro scene for ''Dawn of War 2'', the line "you lost this war before you started" is not lip-synced even remotely correctly.

** The Tau stronghold defeat cutscene in ''Soulstorm'', where the Ethereal [[OffscreenTeleportation somehow]] ended up isolated at the map's Relic, shows him being gunned down by the victor's soldiers, then zooms back to the Shas'o (who's actually at the main Tau base where the Ethereal should have been), having an emotional breakdown over the Ethereal's death.

*** The Tyranid ending on the other hand doubles as both nightmarish and a massive tearjerker. It essentially renders the actions of the last two games [[AllForNothing meaningless]]. After defeating Kyras, the Hive Lord is able to successfully rebuild the splinter fleet, whereupon the Tyranids proceed to wipe out all life in the Aurellian sub-sector. The worst part of it is, as Gabriel Angelos pointed out at the start of the campaign, this was only made possible because their previous defeat in Dawn of War II coupled with the ongoing conflicts meant that nobody took the Tyranic threat seriously anymore. By the time they did, it was simply too late!

** The [[EnemyCivilWar inter]][[CivilWarcraft -Imperium]] [[JurisdictionFriction infighting]] from ''Dark Crusade'' and ''Soulstorm''. Both Davian Thule and General Alexander espouse respect for each other, admitting they don't want to fight and offering the other every chance to leave peacefully, which neither of them can do because they have orders to follow. Presumably, none of the three factions wanted to fight each other that much during the Kaurava conflict either.

*** Possibly the worst is if the "traitor" is Jonah Orion; unlike the others he never loses faith in the Emperor at all, instead [[spoiler:Kyras]] gives away the codes to circumvent his psychic hood, enabling him to be [[DemonicPossession possessed by a demon against his will,]] [[FightingFromTheInside fighting it all the way until his soul is dragged into the warp with it]].

Foe Yay has been cut

* FoeYay:
** Farseer Idranel in ''Dawn of War II'' seemed rather... pleased after your first fight with her.
** Autarch Kayleth would [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything appear to return the favor]] to [[LesYay Inquisitor Adrastia]] in ''Retribution''.
** "Vindicare Assassin cannot fire upon Eldar Farseer due to love"? [[note]]This stems from an [=WH40k=] fanfic "Love Can Bloom"[[/note]]
** Gorgutz becomes fascinated by the Sisters of Battle after he defeats them, including the [[OurAngelsAreDifferent Living Saint]], to the point of ordering his Mekboys to find a way to make him a set of wings like hers.

** Whilst most of ''Retributions'' endings are a combination of both Awesome and Heartwarming, two endings stand out.
*** The Chaos campaign ends with Inquisitor Adrastia confirming the destruction of Sub-Sector Aurellia. As she finishes her report she goes to meet with Gabriel Angeolos, who has sent out a distress vox. [[OhCrap Only, it isn't Gabriel that meets her.]] Instead, a giant shape emerges out of the mist. * WhatAnIdiot: The Eldar get two of these in Retribution's campaign when they fight... the Eldar. Kayleth goes to greet the Biel-Tan Eldar, they try to kill her, vaguely saying something about her being prophesied to kill them. Kayleth decides they're working for Kyras. At the end of the level, you've destroyed their Seer council, which was conducting some kind of ritual, which Kyras [[NiceJobBreakingItHero gleefully]] informs you [[spoiler:was slowing the Exterminatus fleet]]. Kayleth having successfully ensured the annihilation of both Typhon and the buried Craftworld's Infinity Circuit, she investigates the site again when the rest of Biel-Tan announces they're going to retreat and blow up the access tunnel. Instead of, y'know, calling them to ask that they wait, Kayleth once again slaughters her way through the Eldar, the mission ending when the fatally wounded Biel-Tan exarch turns into the Avatar of Khaine.
** It's one for the Biel-Tan Warp Spider Exarch even moreso. At least Kayleth tries to reason with him. Rather than [[PoorCommunicationKills try to explain himself properly]] -- even the Tyranids would have the wherewithal to recognise the danger Exterminatus poses -- he just turns his warhost against you and orders your forces killed.
