''The Octonauts'' follows an underwater exploring crew made up of stylized anthropomorphic animals, a team of eight adventurers who live in an undersea base, the Octopod, from where they go on undersea adventures with the help of a fleet of aquatic vehicles. The subject matter is reminiscent of a blend of ''Franchise/StarTrek'', ''Series/{{Thunderbirds}}'' and Jacques Cousteau. Although it is science fiction as regards its technology, the exotic creatures and locations that the crew encounter are real marine animals in their natural habitats.

* StockFootage: The creature report is mostly recycled animation. Several episodes use the same or similar clips for the OncePerEpisode Octoalert

* WeaponizedStench:
** The episode "The Mega Diaper Babies" has Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil imagining themselves as the titular superheroes, who are trying to rescue the Mega-Hyper Heroes from the evil Angelitron (a robotic version of Angelica). Chuckie gets stuck playing "Stinky," who has the [[WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway extremely useless power]] of "smelling as strong as two babies." In the end, though, Stinky and his horrific stench are the only thing capable of defeating Angelitron.
** The babies try to [[InvokedTrope invoke]] this trope when Chaz brings an attractive police officer to Stu and Didi's for a date. They inadvertently break Chaz's glasses, and Angelica tells them that the police throw anyone who breaks any rules in jail. They then scheme to get Chaz to have to bring Chuckie home and end the date; one of their tactics is to cover him with foul-smelling garbage so he'll have to be taken away for a bath. The plan fails when Stu and Didi simply let Chaz use their own tub.

The show went on hiatus in 2016 after 4 seasons but was later renewed and a 5th season is confirmed to begin airing sometime in 2020. On August 14, 2020, Creator/{{Netflix}} released a feature-length movie for the series, ''Octonauts & the Caves of Sac Actun''. A second, ''Octonauts & the Great Barrier Reef'', was released on October 13, 2020, and a third, ''Octonauts & the Ring of Fire'', was released on January 8th, 2021 in China and worldwide on March 30th, 2021. Netflix will soon be launching a new season of episodes for the series, called ''Octonauts: Above & Beyond''.

* CarnivoreConfusion: One way to avert the PredatorsAreMean subtrope is to emphasize how [[WhatMeasureIsANonCute "tiny"]] their prey are (e.g., krill). When a cute animal is acknowledged as prey, it is usually saved by the heroes, to the chagrin or annoyance of the predator.

* AlwaysABiggerFish: Literally. One particular moment has Kwazii fleeing from an eel (in effort to distract it long enough for Peso to retrieve something from the eel's home), and attempting to scare the eel off with sea snakes. However, the "snakes" were a Mimic Octopus in disguise.
