* GenderNeutralWriting: The writing surrounding the PlayerCharacter is this way in order to account for both the male and female versions of the protagonist, such as Taylor and Hall referring to him/her as the nondescript "new blood" in the first two levels, and they are never referred to by gendered pronouns at any point in the campaign. Since the player plays a largely supportive role to the drama between Hendricks, Taylor and Kane this is made pretty easy. A common criticism by some reviewers is that the female protagonist can feel like a thinly reskinned version of an obviously male character, such as Kane's implied romantic interest in the player regardless of gender. .
** Averted in the Nightmares campaign however, where the female protagonist is the only option to play as, leading to her gender being occasionally noted in the dialogue.

* QuickMelee: Notably, this game set the series to go back to the original games' system: quick melee takes the form of smacking the enemy with your gun, and it's noticeably weaker than the knife used since VideoGame/ModernWarfare, taking two hits from the front to kill someone at full health. Separate melee weapons exist and will still kill an enemy in one hit, but they have to be specifically unlocked and equipped.

* HappyEndingOverride: Both inverted and played straight, somewhat. The game assumes Menendez being killed as canon. Yes the anarchic rise-up happened, but the damage is minimal due to most of the footage is edited or made-up in-universe and most of the followers disgusted and after seeing Menendez' perceived cowardice of wearing a US Army uniform as a disguise, with the Cordis Die movement soon dissolved. However the cyberattack in Los Angeles leads to Direct Energy Air Defense (also indirectly, Corvus) and no matter if the US and China reconcile, the political shake-ups unrelated to Black Ops II as a whole lead to an even worse timeline.

** Despite being a huge 15-foot tall war robot, the P.A.A.W.S. MiniMecha is vulnerable to small arms fire and can be brought down with about 70-80 assault rifle rounds, which with extended mags and fast reload mods takes less than several seconds of sustained fire. One of the many reasons no sensible military has any interest in pursuing development of MiniMecha in real life is that any robot with a torso light enough to walk on two legs would be way too vulnerable for military purposes, as (barring the development of some insanely light and strong miracle alloy) it would be impossible to armor it sufficiently without making it too heavy to function; you end up with a big, slow target that can't resist the sort of damage a big, slow target is likely to take.

** [[spoiler:Triple subverted if one goes by the possible and logical explanation that the entire game (after the first mission) is one long dying dream gone haywire, as the pre-mission after action reports seem to indicate. The main character had, through a weird fluke, actually continued to live on in Taylor's DNI. * CuttingOffTheBranches: Background material indicates the true outcome of Black Ops II was that Mason chose to kill Menendez at the end of the "Judgment Day" mission (thus also making it irrelevant what other choices were made), though it is revealed that Cordis Die did not rise up like how they are stated to in that ending (it is implied that the Washington DC riot depicted in the ending is a made-up propaganda video in-universe); rather, they fall apart due to the nature of Menendez's death (executed mid-escape while disguised as a US soldier) not being the glorious last stand his supporters envisioned him going down in.
