* StealthPrequel: Initially offered as a WhatIf story where Elizabeth and Booker are transplanted into a FilmNoir mystery taking place in Rapture. [[spoiler:Then after many allusions of the multiverse concept from the main game, it's finally revealed to be a StealthSequel to ''Infinite''; Elizabeth and the Luteces are hunting down and killing the last remaining Comstock in the multiverse. ''Then'' it's revealed to be this in ''Episode 2'', where Elizabeth ends up being witness to and responsible for some major events in the first game's backstory, including helping Atlas launch the New Years Eve bombings, creating the imprinting process between Big Daddies and Little Sisters, indirectly causing the death of Suchong, and finally handing over the "Would You Kindly" TriggerPhrase to Atlas, thus setting up the events of the first game.]]

* VoodooShark: The previously unexplained Vigors are revealed to be Plasmid technology that Jeremaih Fink stole from Rapture. Drinkable Plasmids are also HandWaved as needing 10 times the ADAM to explain their absence in the first two games. This raises the question of how Jeremiah Fink got enough ADAM to mass produce Vigors without an equivalent to Little Sisters. Also ADAM is highly addictive and causes cancer like growths, properties Vigors are never implied to have (aside from the BodyHorror effects on Booker's hands).

* TransgenderFetishization: One of the posters in Rapture's porn shop has "GenderBender" proudly displayed as the title, with the pictured protagonist, [[GenderBlenderName Chris]], appearing to have breasts and a moustache, while wearing masculine clothing and make-up. This is another part of the shop that's intended to demonstrate Rapture's sexual mores, defying the heteronormative standards that would have been present on the surface at the time (while also exploiting non-heteronormative sexuality/gender to make a profit).

Sexy Walk was renamed/retooled into Supermodel Strut by TRS.

* SexyWalk: Elizabeth does this when she first enters Booker's office. And occasionally when her A.I. goes into "wait for the player to stop exploring around" mode, though this mode occasionally averts the trope by having Elizabeth creep around like a little girl the way she does occasionally in ''Infinite''.

* RocketTagGameplay: Even more than the main campaign, due to the fact that fights tend to be against smaller groups, Booker can't hold much ammo, and he can't take as many hits. Taken UpToEleven in ''Episode 2'', where Elizabeth has no shield, a pittance of health, and extremely slow weapons with no upgrades. On the other hand, she has the three highest damage weapons in the game, save the RPG and sniper rifle, and much better stealth options, as well as a very effective tranquilizer crossbow (which has the unique perk of, in some cases, allowing Elizabeth to retrieve ammo from a target).

Removing some Trivia and YMMV.

* CompletelyDifferentTitle: Released in France with the title "Tombeau sous-marin" ("Underwater Grave").
* ContinuityLockout: The frequent references to events and characters in the first ''[=BioShock=]'' game, and the belated revelation as to the connection between Booker, Elizabeth and original ''[=BioShock=]'', is lost on players who play ''Infinite'' and ''Burial at Sea'' first. Needless to say, as a DLC, the game also makes no allowances for players who, for some reason, play it ''before'' ''Infinite''.

* SequelDifficultySpike: In ''Episode 1'', ammo and money are harder to find, upgrades are fewer, and the shield is much less effective than in the main campaign. However, prices have been reduced accordingly, the HyperspaceArsenal is back, and Possession is a whole lot more useful. ''Episode 2'' is even worse, as Elizabeth is weaker and has fewer weapons than Booker, but this is balanced out by her being a lot better at stealth than him.

** [[spoiler:Daisy Fitzroy's appearance in ''Episode Two'' caught plenty of players off-guard.]]
