* For starters, Yu and Rei. Yeah, they're pretty far from evil, even by this franchise's standards, but that doesn't change the fact that they're a pair of {{Undead Child}}ren, floating around Primp Town [[GhostAmnesia with no memory of their past lives or how they died.]] There's also the fact that while Rei is rather solemn and quiet regarding his current state, [[InnocentInaccurate Yu is not only perfectly happy to be a ghost, but wants others to know the same joy]]. [[AmbiguousInnocence She wants to make just about anyone she meets into a ghost]], [[KillEmAll basically offering to ''murder'' the other characters]], ''[[WhatDoYouMeanItsForKids in a game for all ages...]]''

* [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/4/4f/EcoloPP7.png Ecolo's original design]] is a bit unsettling, delving deep into the UncannyValley with his [[NightmareFace big round eyes and creepy smile]], [[DarkIsEvil all against a pitch-black shadow.]] It doesn't help that he tried to [[OmnicidalManiac bury the world in Puyo's in his first appearance.]] His redesign is more comedic than creepy, but he's still doing destructive, chaotic things with that big goofy grin.

*** And you know why they’re ghosts? In life, they made a promise to stay together forever, and Yu was so obsessed with keeping that promise that she [[NiceJobBreakingItHero inadvertently doomed herself and Rei]] to [[BarredFromTheAfterlife an eternity as earthbound spirits]]. No wonder Rei’s so depressed.

* Otomo's situation. [[ButtMonkey His misery is often played for laughs]], but think about it. Prince Salde is a rebellious kid, probably younger than Sig or Amitie even, running around trying to evade his future as king. [[AdultFear The idea of a kid running around in a strange world unattended is probably enough to justify Otomo's worries]], and it doesn't help that Salde is constantly the butt of death jokes, getting EatenAlive twice and StrippedToTheBone if he loses a Puyo Battle. Suddenly, Otomo's constant concern feels quite justified...

* Also in Puyo Puyo Tetris, Chapter 5-10 has Ecolo battle Tee. Not only does he threaten to bury Tee in puyos, losing that battle will have him imply that he killed Tee to have Ringo to himself.

* Another notable group in ''Quest'' is the ''"Altered Satan"'' group, which features Lidelle, Draco, and Satan, and [[NotHimself none of them are acting like themselves]]. Satan acts tender and friendly, Lidelle has turned into an impish prankster, and Draco seems to have become an [[AmbitionIsEvil ambitious]] ColdHam. What makes this actually unnerving is that it's made very clear that [[TheCorruptor Ecolo is the one behind these changes...]]

** Then there's the final one, [[GooGooGodlike Salome, a princess from Hell]], and an [[CreepyChild actual infant.]] She's accompanied and carried around by her faithful Tsukibito, a sentient, bat-shaped cradle with a face that'd give [[VideoGame/AHatInTime the Snatcher]] a run for his money in the eerie departmant [[PerpetualSmiler with that grin of theirs]], especially when [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/0/0b/Img505806_l.png it add its own]] GameFace to contrast Salome's considerably less frightening expression, looking like a jack-o-lantern with wings. She says she's come from Hell for the purpose of scouting. What for is anyone's guess.

* ''Puyo Puyo Quest'' features guest characters from ''Anime/{{Bleach}}'', ''Franchise/SailorMoon'', ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', ''Franchise/{{Persona}}'', and others. While this is pretty cool, it suggests that [[UndeadAbomination Hollows]], [[DarkIsEvil the Dark Kingdom]], [[ApocalypseMaiden Mistress 9]], [[AliensAreBastards the Death Busters]], [[EldritchAbomination Angels]], [[AbusiveParents Gendo Ikari]], [[TheHeartless Shadows]], [[SerialKiller Tohru Adachi]], and more all exist in the cheery world of Puyo Puyo...

** Accord in general has a rather eerie aura to her, especially with this ending in mind. In just about every game she's in, she's a [[TeamMom kind]], [[FriendToAllChildren caring]], [[TheGadfly slightly trollish]] [[CoolTeacher teacher]], with a gentle voice and welcoming face, but also a whole lot of secrets she has yet to reveal. [[AmbiguouslyEvil Whether she's evil, teaching the world's most unnatural lessons, or is just being a dick to everyone is up to debate]], but [[ParanoiaFuel you'd be forgiven for being a bit paranoid anytime she shows up.]]

** [[SarcasmMode Even better]], like Doppel, [[TheBusCameBack he returns in Puyo Puyo Quest]]. He also came back in Puyo Puyo 7, 20th Anniversary, and Tetris 2, giving the impression that [[HereWeGoAgain he's gone and possessed Klug again.]] His appearance in 7 is especially discomforting as he appears as Klug's adult form, further implying that the poor kid's doomed to lose his body in the future...

** And like [[BackFromTheDead Doppel]], [[NightmareFace Popoi]], [[CreepyGood Akuma]], [[MyFriendsAndZoidberg Otomo]], and many other characters mentioned on this page before her, ''"Quest"'' adds a new layer of horror to her character, namely through her lines, some of which make her sound like a full-blown ApocalypseMaiden.

* Then there's Quest's returning characters, which can give longtime fans cause for alarm. [[DragonAscendant Demi]][[HornsOfVillainy serf]] is back, [[ArchEnemy still has a grudge against Rulue]], and aims to TakeOverTheWorld. No [[FreudianExcuse sympathetic motive]] or [[WellIntentionedExtremist good intention]], [[VileVillainSaccharineShow he's nothing short of a legit force of evil running around the Puyo Puyo world]], which sticks out in the cast compared to the likes of the [[TheDevilIsALoser Dark Prince]], [[AmbiguouslyEvil Accord and Popoi]], [[CryForTheDevil Strange Klug]], [[AlmightyIdiot Ecolo]], and even [[TragicMonster Squares]] and [[HeelFaceTurn Rafisol]]. Yeah, Madou had plenty of villains like that, like [[DarkIsEvil Dark Matter]], [[AngelicAbomination Phantom God]], [[EvilSorcerer Runelord]], [[StarterVillain Fudoushi]], [[EldritchAbomination Yog Swartus]], and even Demiserf's old boss, the [[MonsterMisogyny Count]], but what makes Demiserf stand out from them? '''[[TheBusCameBack He came back]]...'''

** Additionally, when Amitie confronts Popoi, what transpired borders on being a {{Jumpscare}}. It plays immediately after Amitie's fight with Arle, shifting to a scene of Amitie walking into a dark room, and not a second later than the scene starts, [[TheDarknessGazesBack she's stopped in her tracks by a giant pair of yellow, evil eyes]], [[EvilIsBigger each eye about the size of her head.]] Though she recollects herself pretty quickly, Amitie is understandably shocked. That's an awfully spooky situation to be in when you're just looking for a lost cane.

''VideoGame/PuyoPuyo'' is the [[SugarBowl last place]] you'd expect to be scared, but look deep enough, and even the most endearing worlds have some [[SurpriseCreepy horrifying things]] buried beneath the surface, most of which stems from EarlyInstallmentWeirdness.

** Even if it was unintentional, Arle straight-up ''[[OffWithHisHead beheads]]'' Schezo in the PC-98 version of Madou Monogatari. This all happens on-screen and is about as gory as an 8-bit dungeon crawler can allow, with blood pouring down the front of his cloak. Granted [[AssholeVictim Schezo is a straight-up villain in this game]], but the [[SurpriseCreepy moment still comes out of nowhere]] and can blindside anyone familiar with only Puyo Puyo. It serves as the page image for a reason.
** What happens next isn't any better, as Arle then has to fight Schezo's head. His [[OffWithHisHead decapitated]], floating head. The fact that [[OnlyAFleshWound he doesn’t particularly seem to actually be affected that much]], what with his decapitated head still attacking the player as if nothing happened doesn't help.
** If that's not enough, he then possesses this...''[[EldritchAbomination thing]]'' called "[[AerithAndBob Test Body]]", and makes a last-ditch effort to kill Arle! The whole scenario can be a pretty horrifying thing for a fan of Puyo Puyo, especially a Schezo/Arle shipper, to learn about...
** Then there's Test Body's design, it's a multi-armed mass of flesh with a NightmareFace that stares right at you, and bits of its flesh seem to be stuck to the walls around it. It's also missing a good amount of flesh on one of its leg. [[NothingIsScarier Whatever the hell this thing is, it wasn't made through natural means.]] It's entirely possible Schezo ''[[MakerOfMonsters made that thing himself!]]''
** Don't think Test Body is jarring enough? It's been speculated that Schezo, after taking people's powers, [[FedToTheBeast feeds them to this thing!]] Dear heavens alive, Schezo!
** If you're wondering what happens to the poor victims that get drained, Arle encounters one such person in the Game Gear version, which can only be described as a [[https://i.imgur.com/x0CWWms.png gray-skinned rotting corpse]] with no discernable features other than a gaping mouth and eye holes. Arle's rightfully scared of it not because it's a dead victim, but because she's next if she doesn't get out of here.
** Keeping all this in mind, you have to wonder if, under all the LighterAndSofter characterization, is [[NotSoHarmlessVillain he still ready to do that]]? He hunts down Arle and Sig in hopes of taking their power, and if he still does the stuff he did back then to his victims, it makes his efforts a lot scarier...
** And to top it all off, there's what Schezo's name means in-universe. It means "[[BeautyIsBad Handsome man]] who [[RageAgainstTheHeavens defiles the gods]]." [[HellHasNewManagement Schezo has shown an intent to usurp Satan as ruler of Hell.]] Schezo doesn't just want to be a Dark Mage, ''[[SatanicArchetype he wants to be the Devil.]]''
* Schezo isn't even the only enemy that can get brutally decapitated in that game. Meet [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/2/26/Dullahammadou2.png Dullahan]], who takes the headless knight depiction in a more violent and bloody direction.
* In Madou ARS, we get some insight on [[DarkAndTroubledPast Schezo's backstory]]. At 14 years old, he finds himself on a school trip, being lured to a mirror. To make a long story short, he winds up fighting the spirit of [[EvilSorcerer Runelord]], and manages to defeat him, gaining the Dark Sword in the process. He escapes the mirror, and sees his future self in his reflection, as a Dark Mage. Despite rejecting the idea of dark power before, Schezo now seems perfectly happy to make that future a reality, [[CreepyChild even smiling eerily at the thought of it.]] The whole story implies that Schezo was (and still is) [[BrainwashedAndCrazy a puppet to Runelord]], which means that the guy [[StalkerWithoutACrush who tried to kill Arle]] ([[ItMakesSenseInContext even after losing his head]]), [[WouldHurtAChild chased down Sig for his arm]], and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking said more creepy things than one can count]]...'''[[FridgeHorror may not have even done it all of his own free will!]]'''
** The implication that Schezo is Runelord's thrall actually makes the aformentioned decapitation even worse. While it could be chalked up to EarlyInstallmentWeirdness, the fact that Schezo is [[Really700YearsOld centuries old]], as well as [[OnlyAFleshWound perfectly able]] and [[DefiantToTheEnd willing]] to try and kill Arle even after losing his head, even possessing a fleshy abomination he had in his dungeon to do it, then [[UnexplainedRecovery shows up in later games no worse for wear]], implies that [[GreaterScopeVillain Runelord]] ''[[FateWorseThanDeath won't even let Schezo die in peace.]]''
** And it's not just Schezo stuck like this, [[TheHero Ragnus]] is the one who defeated Runelord, [[ILetGwenStacyDie who killed Ragnus' girlfriend Patty]]. [[Really700YearsOld Now Ragnus is even older than Schezo]], [[ForgottenFallenFriend has no memories of Patty]], and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking is cursed to de-age if he stops fighting]]. Runelord got the last laugh with his DyingCurse. [[TheBadGuyWins Do the math.]]
* [[EvilTwin Doppelganger Arle]] is heavily implied to be a half of the legendary sorceress [[PosthumousCharacter Lilith]] from dubiously canon ''Madou Monogatari Chronology'' and ''Shin Madou Monogatari'' novels, with Arle being the other half. According to the early plot of the Gameboy version of ''Puyo Puyo~n'', before it's changed in the final release, the Doppel was driven mad from years of isolation, and now wants to KillAndReplace Arle, even [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashing]] [[HijackingCthulhu the Dark Prince]] and [[AndYourLittleDogToo kidnapping Carbuncle]] to lure her into a trap.

** In Doppelganger Schezo's case, he's the spawn of the space-time crystal stealing Schezo's magic, giving him physical form. Unfortunately, due to lacking any semblance of reason prior, he used Schezo's personality and powers as a blueprint, developing the overwhelming desire to steal. Steal what, you ask? ''Life force''. On top of that, due to having space-time powers, he's capable of warping the amusement park's corridors to trap his victims. Suddenly those amusement park attractions sound way more unfun...
* A lot of the enemies in the earlier games go right into the UncannyValley. ** One of those enemies that never returned is known as the Rot, and they’re actually [[ParasiteZombie animated by Sarpropel Insects]] that drop to the ground when slain. These larva will grow in size to try and engulf Arle, who’s only six, in their gaping, faceless maw.

And she was ''four years old'' at that time. Be thankful he was never in the PC-98 Madou 123...

What should probably be funny [[WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises looks]] [[RedEyesTakeWarning insanely]] [[UncannyValley creepy.]]
** The protagonists don't fare much better. The earlier games had Arle, Schezo, and Rulue happily (and [[ThousandYardStare vacantly]]) staring at the player. It's...unsettling to see.

* In Madou Monogatari III, Arle encounters the SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome from casting Ice magic far too often while lost in the woods: frostbite. She has it so bad, they've ''[[https://i.imgur.com/cAI6Tdd.png cracked open and bled]]''. The worse part? The store she visited lacked any medicine to help her problem, and decided to fight her way through Mokemoe Labyrinth in spite of her condition just to help get the store properly restocked. ''Geez'', Arle!
* In some of the ''Madou'' games, Arle can perform ''fatalities'' on certain enemies using the right attack. One example is [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/6/6a/WerewolfAflame.png setting a werewolf on fire.]] Keep in mind that Arle was only ''six'' when she did this.
** One enemy, Garuda, also introduces itself by eating Lamia alive, complete with blood dripping from its mouth!

Oh, and he's possesses Wish. [[ThisIsGonnaSuck Good luck, Schezo, you'll need it...]]
** If Dark Matter didn't bother you enough, here we have the [[https://puyonexus.com/mediawiki/images/0/06/Phgod.gif Phantom God]]. Note the [[UncannyValley eerily detailed hands]] and [[EyesDoNotBelongThere eyes that seem to be bursting from the forehead.]] Oh, and that's not the only form it gets. It gets [[https://i.imgur.com/ZpUuC9v.png a nightmarish visage]] when it TurnsRed. It's almost as if the skin on its face got flayed off...
* Rulue gets her own backstory in ARS, where she deals with the Count, a vampire with a taste for virgin blood. ''Yeesh''... [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything He even drains her blood and kidnaps her.]] And he can do it ''again'' in one of the bad endings in ''Rulue's Spring Break''.
** On that note, [[HornyDevils Succubus]] once held Schezo hostage in her dungeon and tried to torture him into her slave. Again, ''yeesh''...
* [[CanonDiscontinuity While later installments suggest that ''Madou Monogatari Chronology'' isn't canon anymore]], [[ApocalypseWow the Final Ragnarok]] is pretty much this. [[RageAgainstTheHeavens Arle went to war with the Creator of the Madou world]], and said war spanned across entire dimensions, and by the time it was done, '''[[EverybodysDeadDave everyone save for Dark Prince was dead]] and [[CessationOfExistence ceased to exist]].''' Dark Prince then proceeded to recreate the world with replicas of everyone, with [[NotAllowedToGrowUp their ages set in stone]], and [[AfterTheEnd that's how the Puyo Puyo world was born.]] Again, its canon is dubious at best, but at least one version of Puyo Puyo was set '''after an actual apocalypse!''' And what followed was a world made by the Dark Prince, who basically fashioned his own LotusEaterMachine where nobody ages or changes. Maybe ''that's'' the reason it's not canon...

** Even if it was unintentional, Arle straight-up ''[[OffWithHisHead beheading]]'' Schezo in the PC-98 version of Madou Monogatari II is definitely this. This all happens on-screen and is about as gory as an 8-bit dungeon crawler can allow, with blood pouring down the front of his cloak. Granted [[AssholeVictim Schezo is a straight-up villain in this game]], but the [[SurpriseCreepy moment still comes out of nowhere]] and can blindside anyone familiar with only Puyo Puyo.
