* Spotted hyenas really do make a sound that's eerily similar to human laughter. [[UncannyValley It's one of the main reasons they're so creepy]]. They produce the sound when they're stressed, as seen [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONFi8N2FQsc here,]] making them an example of TensionCuttingLaughter as well.
** Hyenas also make a creepy squealing sound when they are very happy, though this doesn't sound as much like laughter and is rarely heard, usually only when meeting a friend they haven't seen in a long time.
* Some foxes make laughing sounds when they are happy. Since foxes tend to [[CuteButCacophonic scream a lot no matter what they are feeling]] it can be difficult to tell the difference between happy and angry sounds.

Incidentally, the inspiration for this trope, spotted hyenas (''Crocuta crocuta''), aren't really laughing when they make their infamous vocalizations. It appears to be a form of communication used mostly when fighting for food or in social conflict. For actual hyenas portrayed in a negative light, see HeinousHyena. Also, the Hyena is often the [[OnlyOneFindsItFun sole exception]] to a ToughRoom.
