* ''VideoGame/MonsterHunter'': A number of supporting characters are revealed to have been famed hunters, but had to retire due to grave incidents that occured to them while hunting certain monsters. The Legendary Gunner who lives in Kokoto Village in ''VideoGame/MonsterHunter2004'' was forced to retire due to a leg injury (though he doesn't specify what caused it). The Shipwright from Jumbo in ''VideoGame/MonsterHunter2Dos'' lost his right leg and earned a wicked scar along his left arm in a Plesioth hunt gone wrong. The Village Chief of Moga in ''VideoGame/MonsterHunter3Tri'' reveals in the expansion ''3 Ultimate'' that [[spoiler:an Ivory Lagiacrus he needed to hunt put an end to his career, and he tells this to the protagonist when they're asked to hunt a specimen of that monster]]. The Ace Commander whom you meet in ''VideoGame/MonsterHunter4'' reveals in the expanded story for ''4 Ultimate'' that his carelessness while hunting a Rathian led to an intruding Elder Dragon (Kushala Daora) [[spoiler:cause a permanent injury to his mentor, the Master of Defense]]. Finally, High Rank Hunter Ayame from Kamura Village in ''VideoGame/MonsterHunterRise'' saw her leg become badly injured on a hunt and she has been unable to fight since, though it's subverted as she realizes that, while her body might never again be what it was before, that doesn't mean she can't fight anymore, and takes on various rehabilitation measures in Kamura.

* In ''Manga/DinosaurSanctuary'', Masaru, a ''Triceratops'', was a popular zoo attraction for years, until he got one of his horns stuck in his enclosure wall and broke it off. Though the injury was entirely superficial, the popularity of his exhibit plummeted, and he was relocated to a much smaller zoo. Even there, he was relatively unpopular until his keepers decided to play into the idea of his broken horn by putting it on display as part of the exhibit (even challenging guests to try to lift it), which turned out to be a good enough gimmick to save him from being sold again.

** Hunter Zolomon was an up and coming FBI agent until a bad call in the field caused him to be shot in the knee by a supervillain and his father-in-law to be killed by the same villain. Losing his ability to walk, he was promptly discharged, and his life and mental state fell apart between the derailment of his career and his wife leaving him. When he learns that Wally West is the Flash, he proceeds to beg Wally to use the Cosmic Treadmill to time travel back and prevent the incident that crippled him, but Wally refuses on the basis of time travel being extraordinarily dangerous and unpredictable… so [[SanitySlippage an increasingly unhinged]] Hunter tries to use the Treadmill himself to do it and accidentally causes a chronal explosion [[StartOfDarkness that transforms him into the new Professor Zoom and breaks what remains of his mind]].

This is also why ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' slowly phased out the usage of series that starred Kamiya in concern for his lung health.

** In the late 2000s, Felipe Massa was touted as a favourite to become Brazil's next Formula One world champion. After a strong campaign with Ferrari in 2008 in which he won six races only to lose the title to Lewis Hamilton by a ''single point'', the team would struggle to adapt to regulation changes in 2009. Massa eventually got to grips with their new car, finishing third at the German GP - but come qualifying for the next round in Hungary, he would be hit in the head with debris from another driver's crash, knocking him out and causing him to slam head-on into a wall, fracturing his skull. He survived, but was out of commission for the remainder of 2009 and come his return to the grid in 2010, no longer seemed capable of the results he achieved beforehand - only scoring a few more podiums for the rest of his time with Ferrari, and having a rather mediocre stint at Williams before calling it quits in 2017.

* In ''Literature/November9'', Fallon's severe burn injuries put the brakes on her once promising acting career; due to HollywoodBeautyStandards, she struggles to get roles because of her obvious, difficult-to-cover burn scars. Fallon is pretty despondent about it, given she had dreamt of being an actor since childhood and worked hard at developing her acting skills, only to be rejected for something completely out of her control and unrelated to her acting ability. At the beginning of the novel, she's moving to New York partly because she thinks she might have better luck getting roles on Broadway. From what we can tell, Fallon's acting career never really pans out, though she does find success and contentment as an acting coach.
