* TheHero: Naruto is the main protagonist force, protecting his comrades and fighting bad guys.

* OutDamnedSpot: Naruto is seen scrubbing his hands practically raw when coping with killing his first enemy and thinking he's a monster.

** There's [[TeamMom Kurenai]], [[TheStoic Shino]], [[CoolBigSis Ayame]], [[TookALevelInKindness Sakura]], and [[DirtyOldMan Jiraiya]], all for [[{{OTP}} NaruHina]]. It says something when even [[spoiler:the local EldritchAbomination]] thinks they're [[YouGotSpunk a decent enough match]]. (Although, its exact words are [[spoiler:"Perhaps you'd make good breeding stock."]])

* YouGotSpunk: [[EldritchAbomination The Kyuubi]] says this to [[spoiler:Hinata]]. Really.

* DeconstructionFic: The entire story deconstructs many aspects, plot points, and characterizations of ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' as a whole. Naruto's status as a pariah is the result of something more serious than a case of AllTheOtherReindeer. The teaching methods of a SinkOrSwimMentor like Kakashi are shown to be vastly inferior when compared to the more involved methods of Kurenai and Gai. The abuse Hinata has to deal with at home (albeit much more severe than in canon) has horribly warped her sense of self-worth [[spoiler:to the point where she would rather die in a pointless duel than lose and be considered a failure again]]. Even Naruto's [[HighlyVisibleNinja canon style of dress]] is critiqued.

* TrueCompanions: One of the core elements of the story is seeing the members of the eponymous team turn into this as time goes on. Especially in the case of [[AllTheOtherReindeer Naruto]] and [[AbusiveParents Hinata]], as the team eventually becomes their main solace, due to their horrible childhoods and the team being the closest thing they have to a real family.

* DualWielding: Shino's mother uses (and teaches him) a "praying mantis" combat style using twin swords in a ReverseGrip.

** A condensation jutsu used to gather little amounts of water from the surrounding atmosphere [[MundaneUtility in order to accomplish menial tasks]] (like refilling a canteen). By supercharging it, Naruto creates a [[MakingASplash giant torrent of water]] [[spoiler: that he uses to decimate Gaara's sand shield during their fight in chapter 17]].
** A brief chakra pulse used to cancel genjutsu; generally a short-range tactic, it's limited by the amount of chakra put into it. By supercharging it, Naruto creates the equivalent of a chakra [[ElectroMagneticPulse EMP]] [[spoiler: capable of covering the entire village and disrupting all kind of techniques beside genjutsu. In chapter 17, Naruto uses it to cancel the genjutsu that Kabuto puts on the stadium during the invasion to the village, but the pulse is so big it ends messing up other jutsu in the area, including ''those necessary for Orochimaru's plans'']].

* TheChick: Tenten and/or Sakura, whenever Team 7 and/or Team Gai act in tandem with Team 8.

* {{Twitchy Eye}}brow: The primary way of [[TheSpock gauging Shino's mood]] is the position of his eyebrows.
* TurtlePower: [[spoiler: Gai offers Naruto the turtle summoning contract and Naruto accepts.]]
* [[UngratefulBastard Ungrateful Bitch]]: Hinata puts herself through the wringer to rescue Hanabi, her younger sister, from a trio of missing nins that kidnapped her. [[{{Jerkass}} Hanabi]] is not impressed.

* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Naruto's reliance on his Kage Bunshin is remarked on. It's not his only technique but it is the [[MundaneUtility most]] [[ZergRush convenient]].

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** Naruto is given weights to attach to his limbs to help him grow stronger. He decides to pile as many as he can onto him in an attempt to get stronger even faster...only to be weighed down by all of the added weight. He is taken aside and told to adjust the weights gradually, otherwise he would just hurt himself. Similarly, Hinata tries using the weights while in an exhausted state and collapses in exhaustion. Naruto tells her that she will just damage her muscles if she overexerts herself.
** After being coldly rejected by her many times, Naruto gives up on [[{{Tsundere}} Sakura]], and advises Lee to do the same. Lee listens to what he has to say. Furthermore, Sakura overhears this conversation and is shocked by what she heard. She [[NeverMyFault initially tries rationalizing it by thinking that Naruto was being unfair and that she didn't want to ruin her chances with getting with Sasuke]] [[SubvertedTrope before remembering how she ''rejected'' the frequent date requests (i.e. hitting him)]] and [[JerkassRealization realizing how it has been negatively impacting her relationships with others]].
** [[spoiler:Sasuke [[KickTheDog taunts Naruto by calling Hinata weak in an attempt to throw him off before their match in the preliminary round.]] Instead of being shaken by the taunt, it only pisses Naruto off, who proceeds to [[CurbStompBattle knock Sasuke out within the first five seconds of the fight]]]]. This also alienates [[spoiler:Sasuke]] from the others, such as Sakura, who thought that he went way too far.
** Naruto is trapped by Shikaku during the Sand/Sound invasion. What does he do to break out of the grasp? Use his Chakra pulse technique, with the energy causing the paw to explode since it was being contained.
** [[spoiler: The Third Hokage may have survived the Invasion, but he has lost an arm in the process. He has no choice but to step down. Tsunade points out that regrowing his arm would potentially kill him, since it requires a lot of energy, something the Third doesn't have much of anymore.]]
** Hinata, a relative underdog, still loses to her more experienced cousin, Neji. TheDeterminator is also deconstructed and seen [[spoiler:as suicidal if one refuses to give up a futile conflict.]]
** Unlike Naruto and Hinata, who could spend many hours training together without anyone caring, Shino isn't as lucky and CantCatchUp, since he has clan duties and a family at home waiting for him.

** After her Chunin exam, she pleads for [[spoiler: Naruto to spare her cousin's life, although Neji pummeled and nearly killed her. Naruto does severely injure Neji, but also frees him from the Caged Bird Seal and orders him to be a better cousin]].

* AloofBigBrother: Neji is Hinata's aloof cousin and older brother-figure, as always.

* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: The effects of this on Naruto's everyday life are taken UpToEleven. Vendors who don't outright refuse him service instead overcharge him. He isn't allowed to open a bank account [[spoiler: until his jonin-sensei intervenes and threatens the manager]], and it's heavily implied he gained a reputation as a thief as well as a vandal from unscrupulous businessmen exploiting and exaggerating his prankster antics in order to dip into a fund set up to pay for any damages done by him. Then there's the academy therapist that intentionally gave him ''horrible'' advice, and the med-nins who don't want to treat him...

* HealTheCutie: The fic takes what happened to Naruto and Hinata in canon, puts it at the forefront, and takes it UpToEleven. Naruto is shown to be significantly insecure about the Nine-Tails and the treatment from the villagers, while Hinata is borderline suicidal in her aspirations. [[TheMentor Kurenai]] realizes that putting the two together on a team could set them both on a path to healing, and so she takes on Naruto. The fic then largely follows their journey together to heal and grow past their difficulties.

* ObliviousToLove: Naruto to Hinata, [[UpToEleven even more so than in canon]]. It's remarked on and justified several times, but considering they spend every day together here, it's ''astonishing''. Even Shino [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] it. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]] by both Naruto's stunted emotional development keeping him from noticing the subtle cues ("How would he ever have had a chance to learn what love is?") and Hinata's lack of self-esteem and shyness keeping her from being more forward. [[spoiler:Kurenai finally spits it out for Naruto in her letter to him in chapter 22.]]

* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Shino. Taken UpToEleven by his father, Shibi.

* UpToEleven: After [[spoiler: Neji beats Hinata to a pulp and is narrowly prevented from killing her]], Naruto resolves to beat him until his ''hair'' bleeds.

Naruto immediately chooses Sasuke because he knows how violent and ill-tempered Sakura can be.

* DiscriminateAndSwitch: Kurenai tries to give Naruto a lesson about sexism by asking him whether he'd prefer to face Shino or Hinata in a serious fight. Naruto selects Hinata, reasoning that while she's a capable fighter, she's gentle at heart. Kurenai then offers the choice between Sasuke and Sakura instead. Naruto immediately chooses Sasuke because he knows how violent and hot-blooded Sakura can be.

* CurbStompBattle: Naruto vs Sasuke. [[spoiler:One punch, right in the jaw, and Sasuke is '''OUT'''.]] Sasuke had only [[spoiler:deliberately and with malice aforethought slammed down on Naruto's BerserkButton regarding Hinata, ''immediately after Naruto had just watched Neji beat her half to death''. Not a smart move.]] The author gives some arguments at the end of chapter 15 as to why [[spoiler: Sasuke]] lost, suggesting that, among other things, [[spoiler:Naruto is in better condition in this fight, and has been training with someone who defeated Sasuke in canon]].
