* VendorTrash: White items don't have any stat-boosting enchantments or abilities, and gray items are "low-quality" versions of the same. Since crafted recipes require "Reusable Parts" components that come from salvaged normal items and inferior items, they're still worth picking up. * VendorTrash: Poor-quality (gray and white) items are barely worth picking up past very low levels, and are mainly only good for selling off to the local merchants.
** Averted in "Reaper of Souls". All crafted recipes require components that come from salvaged normal items and inferior items (white and gray respectively) and there are some specific recipes that requires you to have a specific level 70 normal item to craft.
*** The "specific level 70 normal item" requirement for crafting recipes has been removed in recent patches. A "specific level 70 rare item" requirement was later added to a different system that creates randomized legendary items, but it still requires a lot of materials from normal and magic items.
*** Once Kanai's Cube is obtained in the post-game, normal, magic, and rare materials can be converted between each other, 100 at a time. Given that inferior and normal items give 6-8 normal materials, magic give 3-4 magic materials, and rare items only give 1 rare material, it's useful to pick up the lower grades if you need more materials. This isn't much of an aversion; you're still trading trash items for currency (material), it's just that the normal and inferior items are *better* at being converted to material.
