Just to be clear... "No Mercy" is killing every monster that crosses the player without checking how many monsters are left. "Genocide" is killing every single monster. "No Mercy" doesn't trigger Sans' boss battle, but "Genocide" does. Why this site liberally (and wrongly) refers to a "Genocide" run as "No Mercy", I've never understood why.

* AllPowerfulBystander: [[spoiler: Deconstructed. Because of his MediumAwareness, Sans is one of ''the'' most powerful monsters in the Underground, but that same awareness is what keeps him from fighting harder to either save or leave the Underground. He knows full well that everything will end up being reset thanks to your (and Flowey's) SaveScumming, and thus no longer sees the point in trying; from his perspective, there's not much point to doing anything ''but'' standing by. He doesn't even attempt to stop you from killing ''his own brother'' because he knows that will eventually be undone as well (that being said, he also won't forgive you for doing it). He will only get involved at the end of the No Mercy route, by which point he's basically the only one left who ''can'' get involved, because the protagonist was left alone to murder everything in their path.]]

* CombatPragmatist: He pulls just about every dirty trick in the book, and constantly breaks the rules of the combat system to compensate for his low stats. Some examples include [[BeginWithAFinisher launching a powerful attack right at the start of the battle]], dodging attacks, ignoring MercyInvincibility, and hitting you ''during menu selection''. In his second phase, he's also able to change attack patterns on the fly just to screw with you. On the first and every subsequent time you reload after being defeated by him, he also gains the ability to randomly interrupt his own opening speech to catch you off-guard with his first attack. OneHitKill. But all of this is {{justified|Trope}}, given the player is multiple leagues ahead of Sans in terms of stats, to the point fighting ''mano a mano'' would be suicidal for him.

* ThresholdGuardian: He blocks your path in the Final Corridoor, and will judge you for all you have done across the game. If you pass with flying colors, he will basically say 'nice work'. If you've been engaging in VideoGameCrueltyPotential, especially if you kill Papyrus, he has some PlayerPunch to deliver. * TrustPassword: If you reload a save after listening to his Judgment during a Pacifist run, he will give you a set of words, if you reset and talk to him again, will utterly fail to convince him that you're a time traveller.
