* KickTheSonOfABitch: It's hard to blame him for beating up Johnny, really.

* BigScrewedUpFamily: Aside from having a pill addicted mother who forgets he exists most of the time and a father who outright hates him and unfairly blames him for his own suffering, his dads entire side of the family isnt any better. His father has little to no contact with his own father and siblings and they all only bother interacting with their dad in hopes of getting inheritance from him. As his grandfather puts it, they don't like him [[LackOfEmpathy "just because"]] he [[AbusiveParent doesnt like them]]. Squee's grandfather is also a cyborg who is cruel and mentally ill, [[ToServeMan believing that consuming his descendants (which he then decides to do to Squee after telling him this) makes him look young when in reality he still looks old)]]. [[EvilIsPetty Also, while he claims he only has to chew on his grandchildren, he reveals that he only eats them because he LIKES too.]]

* YankTheDogsChain: A victim of this. In the final issue, Squees father enters his room to talk to him about his attitude towards him. You would expect it’s because he feels guilty over being a bad father and wants to apologize and reassure his son that deep down he still loves him…NOPE! Though he acknowledges that his attitude towards his son is harsh [[ItsAllAboutMe he asks Squee to look at it from his point of view]]. Being that he has a [[SoulCrushingDeskJob job he hates]] and a [[AwfulWeddedLife pill addicted wife]] so he’s already miserable but having a kid around to support just adds to that. [[Jerkass He even goes as far as to say that all his own (extra) misery is Squees fault for just existing and says that it feels good for him to let it all out with this talk]]. [[LaserGuidedKarma Johnny knocks him out right after]].

* TraumaCongaLine: The entire comic is this for him – the first strip alone is titled ‘Traumatize Thy Neighbor’, and it goes downhill from there.

* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: Murdered the pet rabbit that became Nailbunny after feeding it only once (possibly for the same reason he tried to kill Devi, that it made him feel genuinely happy and he wanted to end things on a high note before they had a chance to accumulate bad memories of each other). Also repeatedly squashes any cockroaches he finds out of sheer jealous rage at them for their simple nervous systems being incapable of experiencing human emotions, though in his madness he believes it's the same bug coming back to life over again to torment him. Given how reality works (or doesn't) in his house, he may not be wrong.

* HatesBeingTouched: Which he makes exceptionally clear.

** He's a major cinephile with a pretty extensive knowledge of both classic and contemporary directors.

* LossOfIdentity: Underwent this as a result of his MindVirus ([[UnreliableNarrator maybe]]).

* MadArtist: The closest thing to a hint that we get to his past is [[spoiler: Nailbunny's suggestion that he was once a gifted artist, and that he was driven to madness after somehow being drained of his creative ability. This is further supported by [[AllThereInTheManual supplementary materials]] revealing that Johnny was the person who gave the doughboys their psychedelic paint jobs and Devi experiencing a very similar thing during ''I Feel Sick''.]] [[WordOfGod Jhonen himself]] has stated that even this shouldn't be taken at face value, though.

* TheParanoiac: He seems perpetually convinced that the entire world is out to get him.

* PintSizedPowerhouse: Johnny is rail-thin and not especially tall (he's 5'9''), but can cut through bone with a single swing of a knife.

* ReluctantPsycho: He's still got enough mental faculty to recognize that he's a monster, and to be unhappy with it.
* SanitySlippage: Gradually becomes scarier and kookier over the course of the series.

* BadassLongcoat: He picks up one of these [[spoiler: in Hell]]. His disappointment over not being able to keep it causes him to ignore the opportunity to learn about his MysteriousPast.

* CantGetInTroubleForNuthin: One of his many [[PowerBornOfMadness Powers Born of Madness]]. He can kill a person in broad daylight surrounded by horrified witnesses and still somehow avoid getting arrested.

* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Along with his AxCrazy, he’s got a variety of other, more benign quirks, like the fear of Chihuahuas and an immense love for [=SpaghettiOs=].

* DeathSeeker: For most of the comic. [[spoiler: Eventually he succeeds, but ends up [[TooSpicyForYogSothoth too spicy for death]].]]

* FreudianExcuse: [[SubvertedTrope He has none]]. He doesn’t even remember why he does this. [[spoiler: Apparently, he’s actually just [[SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan the container]] [[SealedEvilInACan for all human fault]], and sprung a leak when his career as an artist was somehow disrupted.]] He mentions at one point having faint memories of being bullied as a child, but the story makes it clear that they are unrelated to his mania.

* ForgottenFallenFriend: [[spoiler: After his death, Nny doesn't really acknowledge his former existence.]]

* PinocchioSyndrome: [[spoiler: As long as Johnny keeps placating the Wall Monster, he gets closer to becoming real - which is exactly what he wants]].

* ALighterShadeOfBlack: Than the Monster Behind the Wall and the Doughboys, at any rate, though that's [[EvilVersusOblivion not saying a lot]].
* AmbiguousDisorder: He has shades of schizophrenia, OCD, bipolar disorder, anorexia nervosa, insomnia and antisocial personality, along with his general childishness and {{Cloudcuckoolander}} tendencies.

* PoisonousFriend: To Nny, to the short extent that Nny actually trusts him. He has a tendency to keep Nny manic, paranoid and aggressive.

* SuperOCD: He keeps his wall painted with fresh blood because he doesn't like the color of dry blood.

* NiceShoes: Many a fan has noted his neat boots.

* AscendedExtra: She's secondary to her [[BastardBoyfriend boyfriend Dillon]] in her debut appearance, but goes on to be the main protagonist of volume 5.

* UnlimitedWardrobe: Taken UpToEleven. [[FunTShirt If he's wearing a shirt with a logo on it]], it will change from ''panel to panel''. While a few designs, like Happy Noodle Boy's head and the Z? symbol, pop up multiple times, many more only appear once. To a lesser extent, his haircut tends to change between stories, ranging from spiky to scraggly to droopy.

* WeirdnessMagnet: Pushed UpToEleven in his SpinOff. As it turns out, Johnny is probably the ''least'' disturbing thing he has to deal with in his day-to-day life.

* RantInducingSlight: Calling him "wacky" causes him to go off on a tirade that ends with him killing an entire restaurant full of people.

* OmnicidalManiac: [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Right there in the title.]]

* DependingOnTheWriter: Whether or not he kills children. In the comics he won't, and even bashes a pedophile's brains in for trying to hurt Squee, but on his Twitter he makes offhand comments about killing babies more than once. But even if he's willing to cross this particular line, he never hurts Squee specifically.

* AffablyEvil/ FauxAffablyEvil: Pretty difficult to pin down which, since he’s genuinely polite to some of his victims while he brutally murders them. A great example is Issue 2, where he politely talks to Edgar Vargas and even apologizes for feeling like he has to kill him. In general, if you're polite to him, he'll be polite to you but will still try to kill you without hesitation if he becomes convinced that he has to.

Johnny’s six-year-old neighbor and unfailing MoralityPet. Squee [[RuleOfSymbolism represents]] both Johnny’s self-loathing – in his desire to prevent Squee from turning out like himself – and his shot at redemption. Ultimately, Johnny leaves him behind. He later received his own SpinOff found [[ComicBook/{{Squee}} here]].

* TheOneThatGotAway: Referred to as such in her character profile in the [[CompilationRerelease Director's Cut]]; despite their brief romance ending in irreparable disaster, Johnny still holds a place in his heart for Devi for the duration of the series. This phrase also has an additional meaning in the context of their relationship, as Devi is ''also'' the one person to ever successfully escape a murder attempt by Johnny.

* TheSnarkKnight: She's a pretty accomplished DeadpanSnarker, but also one of the more heroic characters in her [[Creator/JhonenVasquez 'verse]].

* MinorMajorCharacter: Appears in only a single comic but is both a symbolic representation of Johnny definitively moving past his old self and the catalyst for him moving out of the neighborhood, as his ability to track down his residence clues Johnny in that he's no longer supernaturally allowed to be a KarmaHoudini.
