* LosingAShoeInTheStruggle: Loses ''both'' shoes when being arrested by Tarsil's men, and spends most of the next book [[DoesNotLikeShoes barefoot]] as a result.

* DoesNotLikeShoes: Jonathan always goes barefoot.

* BodyHorror: Downplayed, but [[spoiler:Under the hood, Briar looks pretty hideous, with bulging eyes, greenish-gray skin, thready white hair, and claws for fingernails]].

* BadassBaritone: [[invoked]] The baritone is offhandedly noted by Fone Bone at one point. Notably, WordOfGod has compared him to ''Creator/ClintEastwood'' in terms of voice and mannerisms.

* OneHundredPercentAdorationRating: The prequel comic ''Rose'' shows that she was incredibly popular and beloved among the people. And even in the rural north of the Valley, she is treated with respect and as a local authority figure.

* KingIncognito: [[spoiler:Seemingly a simple farm owner, Gran'ma Ben is really Rose Harvestar, former Queen of the Valley]].

* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: A great warrior, and still a force to be reckoned with after losing one arm.

** When the Hooded One threatens to kill Fone Bone, Phoney angrily tells [[spoiler:her]] to leave his cousin alone.

* EvilVersusEvil: While he isn't evil, he does end up on the Hooded One's radar both due to the fact that she believes he is the key to free the Locust and also for siding with the heroes.

* CainAndAbel: [[spoiler:A sister variation. She's the heroic Abel to the villainous Briar's, a.k.a. the Hooded One's, Cain]].

* TheCorrupter: His influence helped cause the Hooded One's ([[spoiler:aka Briar Harvester's]]) descent to evil. The prequel comic, ''Rose'', shows that he tried to do the same thing to Rose, but failed. He also tries to do this to Phoney Bone and Thorn over the course of the present day storyline.

* MasterOfIllusion: The Hooded One is very skilled at casting illusions to manipulate people, most notably in how [[spoiler:she distracts Lucius at a critical moment to make sure that Old Man's Cave gets surrounded by her forces]]. In fact, this is how the Hooded One keeps the Rat Creatures in line; according to Stinky and Smelly, the Hooded One can make it seem like ''the sky is falling'' if the Rat Creatures become sufficiently angered by the Hooded One's illusions.

* UltimateEvil: He has no physical form and therefore can never be seen; the most we ever see of him is a pair of glowing "eyes" representing his mortal form as Mim. The prequel comic, ''Rose'' has him taking the forms of the Hooded One, Mim, and a gigantic locust to contact Rose in her dreams.

* GrumpyBear: He's the grouchiest character in the comic, bar none.

* GrumpyBear: The beaver, who is always complaining about something.

* GrumpyBear: Perhaps the only character in the comic who almost matches Lucius here.

* NiceHat: But he loses it sometime during the adventure. He has a new one in ''Tall Tales'', which he calls "The Big Hat". It really is.

* NiceHat: Of course he has a UsefulNotes/DavyCrockett-style coonskin cap.

* BerserkButton: Don't make fun of his nose.

* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Though he's on the heroes side, he ends up opposing them due to greed. By the final arc, this is no longer the case.

* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[RuleofThree Again]], he isn't evil but his obsession on becoming rich is a result of him wanting to be able to finacially support his cousins.

* HatedByAll: Phoney, by way of being The Friend Nobody Likes. It's said that nobody in Boneville aside from his cousins (and even then he and Fone Bone have a strained relationship) respected him due to his greed. Smiley even mentions that the mayor declared a school holiday just so the kids could throw rocks at Phoney. Gran'ma Ben and Lucius also don't care much for him. Thorn is tolerant of him, mostly, but the citizens of Barrelhaven abhor him for his scams.

* {{Anti-Hero}}: Of the [[NominalHero Nominal variety]] due to his greed and the fact that he has no other choice but to help Fone Bone and his friends.

* HeelFaceTurn: Pulls a small one in the final arc where he decides to stay at Atheia (even if it meant risking his life) to assist Granma Ben and the others rather than escaping to Boneville. Other than that, he's still the same [[ReformedButNotTamed greedy jackass]] from before

* MeaningfulName: "Mim" is often used as a nickname for "Miriam" - which is the Hebrew name for [[MadonnaArchtype Mary]].

* TheHighQueen: She was beloved by her subjects when she was alive.

* HeelFaceTurn: Turned to the side of the Locust.

* NeverMessWithGranny: As Phoney Bone finds out when first meeting her. This is played for comedy at first... but when things get serious, Gran'ma Ben wastes no time turning into a full-on Action Hero. Beneath her kindly exterior, Gran'ma Ben is an absolute beast in a fight and she can take on entire groups of Rat Creatures and enemy soldiers single-handedly.

* TheGadfly: Possibly, going hand-in-hand with the Ambiguous Innocence trait mentioned. Smiley ''does'' tick off a lot of people around him, mostly Phoney, and it's quite possible he's doing it on purpose. One issue of the comic is composed entirely of him getting out of chores by slowly infuriating Lucius until the big guy accidentally throws himself off a roof.

* TheSociopath: [[spoiler:Briar repeatedly showcases a significant LackOfEmpathy (coldly telling the Pawan General to his face that she was "finished" with the warriors he sent to Old Man's Cave and who were killed in the volcanic eruption), is a brilliant manipulator (as seen by her getting both the Rat Creatures and men of Pawa to side with the Holy House of Mists), is AllTakeAndAllGive in all of her relationships (to the point where she [[ItsAllAboutMe intentionally sabotages her master's plans to make sure that she stays the favorite]]), and has a grandiose sense of self-importance (with her always viewing herself as the wounded party no matter whatever truth is staring her in the face). About the only aspect that she doesn't have is being TheHedonist, and even then that's only in the present; when she was a rich princess, she loved to be waited on hand-and-foot by her servants]].

* PowerOfTheVoid: The Hooded One calls the Locust's ReligionOfEvil "the Holy House of Mists", and he is said to come from a region of the Dreaming World where there is only a hellish void of nothingness. [[spoiler:Countless unstable [[EldritchLocation Ghost Circles]] (places where the Locust's void and the Waking World) are created when the Hooded One badly botches the ritual to release the Locust at the end of Volume 6]].
