Have a question about how the TVTropes wiki works? No one knows this community better than the people in it, so ask away! Ask the Tropers is the page you come to when you have a question burning in your brain and the support pages didn't help.
It's not for everything, though. For a list of all the resources for your questions, click here. You can also go to this Directory thread
for ongoing cleanup projects.
Ask the Tropers is for:
- • General questions about the wiki, how it works, and how to do things.
- • Reports of problems with wiki articles, or requests for help with wiki articles.
- • Reports of misbehavior or abuse by other tropers.
Ask the Tropers is not for:
- • Help identifying a trope. See TropeFinder.
- • Help identifying a work. See MediaFinder.
- • Asking if a trope example is valid. See the Trope Talk forum.

Ask the Tropers:
openEpileptic Trees question.
- Epileptic Trees: With the popular theory that Omega is actually not an OppositeSexClone, but actually [[TransAudienceInterpretation transgender]], the question is raised about what her genetic defect is, with suggestions ranging from the mundane (her RapidAging doesn't work properly) to the outlandish (she's Force sensitive).%%The trans theory was debunked in the first episode with Tech doing a scan that confirms that she is indeed biologically female.
I'm wondering what to do about the commented out part. Should we just remove/move anything pertaining to it?
I also believe Epileptic Trees only applies to theories so off the wall there's no chance of them being confirmed or denied so this is misuse as it plausible and likely to be addressed. (And how is ET different than Wild Mass Guessing an Speculative Troping which don't allow examples?)
Thoughts?
openIs this speculative troping?
On Cruella, Carl Fan 2020 seems to be making edits predicting what will happen after the movie (saying things like "this will change"). If this were a straight prequel to the 1961 movie, that would be one thing, but considering the time period change, the race lifts given to Roger and Anita, and other factors, this is almost certainly set in an Alternate Continuity. Does this qualify as speculative troping? And what course of action should we take?
openSignature Scene vs. Line
Why is Signature Scene (and Signature Song) YMMV but Signature Line not?
Edited by Ferot_DreadnaughtopenGoonjarBougewaffle deleting YMMV
This guy has been deleting YMMV and random quotes.
The YMMV tends to either:
A) be related to LGBT stuff (such as removing a meme mocking anti-LGBT downvoting in Temtem, removing LGBT Fanbase in Marathon - not YMMV, but they also removed the description of a joke being transphobic in FandomEnragingMisconception.Video Games)
B) Anything vaguely positive towards specific works (such as removing a second opinion from Broken Base in Grim Dawn, which is supposed to show differing opinion, removing Gateway Series from The Sword of Shannara Trilogy, deleting Critical Backlash from YMMV.The Legend Of Zelda C Di Games with a snarky edit reason)
C) Adding an unsupported Unfortunate Implications to YMMV.Altered Carbon over four white characters being depicted as villains.
I've already sent notifiers.
Edited by FishiousRendopenAbout the Do Not Call Me Paul trope
I think the first commented out entry under the Real Life folder should be deleted outright. We don't usually comment out entries unless they are zero context examples, rogue launched tropes or some other issue that requires revising before making the entry publicly visible, and the entry in question compares deadnaming to people not wanting to be addressed by their proper name, which I fail to see as anything but inappropriate and transphobic.
openTechnomaru
They have consistent problems with indentation, are prone to natter and ranting, complete with an angry edit reason in at least one of their edits, have made edits that aren't formatted properly, use slashed tropes, and add "tropes" that aren't even tropes.
- Ranting and angry edit reason: [1]
- Incorrect formatting: [2]
- Slashed tropes and adding tropes that don't exist: [3]
- Bad indentation: Too many instances to list.
open Curious about a trope
Does anyone know if there's a trope for when people check their nails when they're bored/sassy/disinterested/etc.? Is there one at all?
openPossible complaining on YMMV/BeastThePrimordial
One particular user, Aquillion, has made some edits on Beast: The Primordial that seem to be on the complainy side.
For example, the Designated Hero entry originally read:
Aquillion changed it to read:
Another example is an edit to a Broken Base entry that makes it only represent the negative side, going from this:
to this:
It kind of feels like the user wants negative reception towards the game to be much more prominent on the game's YMMV page.
openInvincible Villain complaining?
- And if Batman is an Invincible Hero and the Joker is an Invincible Villain, then combine that invincibility and propensity for insane planning and utter overpowered, logic-defying scenarios into a single character and you get The Batman Who Laughs. He's an evil Batman/Joker hybrid from a universe where Bruce snapped and killed the Joker, becoming Jokerised in the process. So he's got all of Batman's skills, resources, knowledge, training and abilities, with none of the restraint. That and he's able to pull new alternate Batmen out of his ass at a moment's notice for backup, and these guys can have Darkseid-level power (yet will still follow him). The character is ridiculously overpowered when defeating him should be as simple as getting Superman to punch him, while the stories he's in bend over backwards to avoid him getting egg on his face, setting him up as a cosmic threat that causes more destruction and chaos than even the Anti-Monitor. He outright becomes godlike in Dark Nights: Death Metal, where he ruled the multiverse and was fighting on even keel with actual omnipotent gods. Every story he's in reeks of Only the Author Can Save Them Now, but he was thankfully, finally, defeated by Wonder Woman in Death Metal.
I question the example because it sounds more like You Can't Thwart Stage One if they aren't so powerful should be able to beat him and they are ultimately defeated. It looks like the sort of negativity about IV that got it a cleanup awhile back, I don't think it helped.
Should Invincible Villain:
- Require they never lose even by the end of the story?
- Make a plot point of how impossible to beat they are?
- Be YMMV as it seems to be audience reactions to villains they think are too overpowered despite ultimately losing?
openHostility in a not review review
Mari-Shouko posted a "review" where they angrily asked why people were being biased against one of the characters without elaborating who the people were or how they were being biased. While the review has already been reported, Boots replied to the review in a very heated fashion, accusing them of spitting out "stupid bullshit" and repeatedly telling them to fuck off.
Edited by Crossover-EnthusiastopenEdit check Literature
Could someone double-check on my edits on Take That Literature? The alphabetizing was a royal mess, and I'm not sure I got all of it -I kept thinking I was done, and then noticed something else!
Problems included: alphabetizing by a, an, the; alphabetizing by author's first name before last; alphabetizing by series but potholing the series title to the book title, so it looked out of order; slapping stuff onto the end despite the notice on top; different works from the same author scattered around the page, some ordered by author and some by work name; and some that looked they were dropped in where the editor felt like.
(Don't ask about the remaining problems with example indentation, please; I'm worn out from fixing the alphabetical order.)
openRecap Pages Being Too Long
Something that I've noticed being on this website is that certain Recap pages have basically the entire happenings of what is in an episode of a show and not a short summary or synopsis. Just now, I saw the Amphibia's Season 2 finale has its summary written out to something giant that, again, basically goes over every little thing that happens in the episode.
So I guess here's my question: Is there a page I can point/link to where it says that Recap pages are not suppose to be giant laundry lists of everything that happens?
Also, I thought about making a clean-up thread for this sort of thing, but even I don't know how prevalent the problem is. I just happen to be running into this sort of thing more often lately.
openLong Term or Short Term?
A few weeks ago I made a cleanup thread in Long-term for the Darth Wiki items Idiot Programming and Idiot Design. After that however, War Jay 77 said she felt it would be a better fit for Short-term, so I made a cleanup thread there. I feel like people should put more focus on one thread over the other, cuz it's doubtful either of them are gonna get cut, but...which one though?
Edited by JHDopenDoes This Count?
Earlier today, I was browsing Instagram and I came across a Danganronpa fanfic where all three casts are merged together into one killing game. I really want to make a Trope Page for, but I'm not sure if it counts as an actual story? Does it?
EDIT: Here is the link to the story (https://www.instagram.com/danganronpa.killinggamedeluxe/?hl=en). So this is a story, right?
Edited by Tropemaster849openAbout The Wiiviewer Videogame
So I recently decided to add the Wiiviewer's reviews of Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Hollywood Squares, and Pyramid to the respective So Bad It's Horrible Video Games subpages. Now I'm starting to second guess if doing that was a good idea. Not because I neglected the Press Your Luck and Price is Right reviews (he liked those games for some reason, and I respect his opinion) but because there must be a good reason nobody before me thought to add them. Which brings me to my two questions, which are thus: 1) Was there indeed a good reason? and 2) Should I leave the reviews up, or remove them?
Edited by JHDopenUnfortunate Implications on YMMV.WorldWarZ
SaraNaryon left Unfortunate Implications regarding the film depicting Israel as a safe zone from the zombie hordes. I don't really know the new Unfortunate Implications guidelines, but I vaguely recall it needs to be cleared by someone. This was added shortly after the newest Israeli-Palestinian clash, as well.
openUnpublished works page type
Most Unpublished Works have their page type set to "subpage", presumably because this is the default setting for the Darth Wiki namespace. This doesn't seem correct, but tbh nor do any of the other options?? What page type is most correct here, do y'all think?
openReplacing GuideDangIt description?
In the completed TRS for Guide Dang It!, there was some agreement about cleaning up the description page for Guide Dang It!, particularly in regards to the fact that the examples of GDI in the bullet point mostly aren't GDI.
I put up a new description in the sandbox and put a post in the Trope Description Improvement page but have only gotten back one response on it looking okay.
Is there a general policy for making larger changes on description pages? As stated in a follow-up post, I didn't feel comfortable with just outright replacing it without some other thoughts.
Edited by YourIdeasopenDoes This Qualify As Screwed By The Network? Live Action TV
I want to add a Screwed by the Network entry to Debris, but something tells me I should check first.
Here is why I want to add the entry. NBC did not promote the show aside from a couple of trailers and episode promos. It also received positive (though not acclaim worthy) reviews from fans and critics.
Again, wanted to check before adding since the show just got canceled and I’m mildly pissed about it.

This is a trope that I have been wondering if it should exist. There's the infamous 7 Zark 7, the Narrator Lady from Maple Town, and Dizzi from Beyblade.
