Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] To Caligula. I remember reading that some Roman and Medieval historians later on speculated he had been possessed by a demon, to explain his sudden change into insanity. Interesting to discover someone made a story about it.

Also [tup] to Captain Constanta. The more 2000 AD candidates we talk about, the more I want to start reading them.

[tup] Constanta, I think.
I recently read A Love Like Blood, and Karkossa definitely counts, but Romulus isn't THAT much better.

Mass murder and rapings? [tup] Caligula, though no surprise there.

Also [tup] Constanta too. Again, he doesn't go around raping billions of aliens and murdering millions of babies and unborn fetuses like the other 2000 AD villains, but hey. Still pretty nasty.

'Yes' to Constanta

@Lordyam: Yep. There was a second "arc" you could call it. It was officially called Caligula: The Heart of Rome, though it's also known simply as Caligula Volume 2.

@ACW: Yep, that's the one. Story wasn't too shabby, but UGH the violence. Though, you being unaffected by that stuff, it may not bother you too much. [lol]

@Silverblade: I can understand the concern if it's a Torture Porn, but it's certainly not. It's nasty and disgustingly violent, but it has a solid plot beyond "gore" involving The Hero trying to keep himself from turning completely wicked while serving under Caligula, and The Lancer has his own story of him trying to save his wife's soul from the demon's possession, and actually succeeding by the end.

Finally, I've got a pic or two of Demon!Caligula that will probably by pretty good for the Image Links pages. I'll get around to posting them here soon.

Anywho, yet another new proposal (THAT'S RIGHT ACW, YOU ASKED FOR IT! evil grin)

Now, this story already has a CM, but there are alot more contenders, and one of their arcs has (seemingly) concluded, so here's his effortpost. IF he shows up again (Unlikely, seeing as he was punched in half and disintegrated), I'll update his effortpost.

What's the work?

Sidekicks is the tale of a world where superheroes and sidekicks exist.

Who is he?

Dr. Max is a scientist who excels in robotics, and is one of the main baddies of the second half of the webcomic.

What has he done?

When we are first introduced to Max, he is manipulating a man named Mr. Ellison, a very rich executive, to fund his research into creating robots.

Dubbing these robots "Alex", Max regularly sends them after low-ranking heroes and sidekicks to murder them and collect data to further along his research into creating the ultimate robot.

When a hero and his sidekick track one of the attacks from Max's robots to his secret lab, he sends dozens of his Alex robots to kill them, and they succeed in killing the sidekick.

Jina, a sidekick (Also Mr. Ellison's daughter), shows up with Lamia to investigate the robots as well, and Max begins taunting them through a computer screen about the fact that he's betrayed Mr. Ellison, then brutally beats the man to death (For interrupting him while he's gloating. Yep) with a wrench while Jina looks on in horror.

Max unveils the "ultimate" Alex robot, and sets it against the heroes, before ordering it to murder the dozens of other lab staff in the building now that they've outlived their usefulness, at which point Lamia defeats the robot.

Escaping from the area, Max reports back to Iblis (The Dragon for the Big Bad), the one who he has been working for, and continues to manufacture robots that he routinely sends out to kill heroes.

After using two actual superpowered people as subjects, Max rips their consciousnesses apart, and uses said consciousnesses to implant his new army of clones with their brain patterns.

To test out his two newest, and most powerful, superpowered clones thus far, Max sends them to destroy an entire city, and they kill alot of people on their rampage before being stopped.

Later, Max transfers his mind into a superpowered robotic body, uses it to strongarm two villains into his service, then tracks down the comatose body of one of the most powerful superheroes ever, Darkslug.

Max reveals his plan to absorb Darkslug's cells (Which will kill him) into his own body to increase his own power, and attempts to murder the innocent and powerless woman who has kept Darkslug alive so far.

When numerous heroes show up, Max duels with them while making sure to draw out their beatdowns and deaths for his own, sick pleasure, fighting to inflict pain first, death second.

Jina (The girl whose father he murdered) confronts him with her robotic butler/best friend, Alex (Yes, that's one of Max's robots, but he's a good guy) and Max uses a command code to force Alex to murder Jina for the lulz, however, when Alex hesitates due to having developed a conscience( Awwwwwww!) Max immediately tries to kill him (Boooooo!)

Darkslug ends up awakening from his coma just as Max is preparing to kill everyone in the room, and Darkslug handily punches Max in two before disintegrating him into oblivion.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

None. He's a sadistic mad scientist who perpetrates his atrocities For the Evulz.

Heinousness?

This is a slight issue, but I think he's bad enough with what he's working with.

For most of the story, he's just a low-ranking scientist. No powers, just money, and his brains. Secondly, attempted mass murder on the scale he attempts is rare in the comic. Only other CMs or potential ones have as large an attempted bodycount as he, and he has considerably less resources than them.

Overall, he created armies of robots that he routinely tested by having them attack and murder innocent superheroes and sidekicks, he brutally beat a man, who was his partner, to death with a wrench while giving the man's daughter a front row seat, he ordered his entire staff of workers massacred when they outlived their usefulness, he tested two of his strongest creations by ordering them to destroy an entire city, leading to alot of innocents' deaths, and finally, once he gained superpowers, he sadistically tried to kill his opponents in gruesome ways.

TLDR; Max has very few resources when compared to other baddies, and he still sticks out as heinous.

Final Verdict?

Keeper, I'd say.

[up] [up] [up] Max is about as bad as Pluton. Pluton is IMMENSELY stronger than Max, explaining his higher successful bodycount, but when it comes down to it, Max attempts just as bad as Pluton (Using his machines to attempt to massacre a city as a test run). The only reason Pluton is arguably worse is because his masacre succeeds.

Pluton still counts for being a Starter Villain with very little screentime, and Max is a solid Keeper at this point, IMO.

Okay, just finished the Caligula comic (including Heart of Rome); holy crap [lol]. And yes he counts (despite a throwaway panel where he called his recently-dead sister a "goddess", but considering that's ALL there is)... And yes, Incitatus is a Serial Rapist talking horse [lol] Also, this is EXTREME Nightmare Fuel. NSFW warning surprised. Ravok, there may be a good image, but good luck finding one that's appropriate [lol].
LOTS of Fanservice, as well as Fetish Retardant and Fan Disservice. And yes, quite Gorny. And that link was only the most extreme example of the abundant Nightmare Fuel. German Nobile (the artist) gives us some truly...vivid images.

[up] Holy crap, sorry DeCarta, I think your record has been broken. I'll we that effortpost tomorrow.

Alright, so here's Air Force Lieutenant General Charles Samson Russell, call-sign "Caesar" (how I shall refer to him from now on), from Area 7. This is the same series that brought us J. Killian; this is actually the book before Scarecrow. Since it's been a LONG time since I read the book, I checked it out from my library, and will be writing this effortpost as I skim, so sorry in advance if it's a bit...disjointed. And don't worry, the writeup will be much shorter.
  • Who is he and what has he done?
    • So we get a prologue where Caesar is about to be put to death for ordering the murder of 2 advisers to the Joint Chiefs, Caesar, who is Crazy-Prepared, had surgeons insert a transmitter into the heart of a Governor during an exploratory procedure, while also making a plaster mold of the Governor's right hand (this is important later, as the Governor would later become President 15 years later). Caesar is then supposedly executed, but is revived, thanks in part to hyperoxygenated blood administered during 2 blood transfusions Caesar had needed after getting beatings at Leavenworth (apparently, traitors are NOT looked upon fondly by fellow prisoners). There are also bombs found at airports of numerous big cities, including DC, NYC, LA, and Chicago.
    • Back in the present, the President is making a visit to a secret Air Force base, Area 7. Accompanying him are Shane "Scarecrow" Schofield and his troops. Long story short, they are working on a vaccine for the Sinovirus, a Chinese-created bioweapon from which Asians are immune.
    • Back to Caesar: Remember those bombs and that transmitter I mentioned earlier? If the President's heart stops, the bombs go off. Ditto if the President fails to touch his palm to the Nuclear Football every 90 minutes. He gives the President an option: If his Secret Service detail (thank goodness Scarecrow and co. were with it) vs. the elite 7th Squadron.
    • Anyway, after a LOT of action, the President tells the backstory of Caesar:
      • Caesar is a key figure in the Brotherhood, a secret, racist, anti-black Air Force society, Having been in charge of numerous Air Force bases, Caesar knows all the secrets.
      • As for those bombs, it's only northern cities (St. Louis is the farthest south), as "Caesar wants an America without the North."
      • Then, with the Sinovirus and the cure, everyone would owe their life to him. Blacks would likely be killed first.
    • We later find out that Caesar had a second transmitter inserted, inside his OWN heart. Even though Area 7 will be blown up, Caesar is willing to sacrifice himself.
    • Fortunately, Gant manages to trick the signal, Caesar is shot and later dies, the heroes escape, the bombs are disarmed, and other members of the Brotherhood, on the way to prison, somehow (tongue) crashes during flight, killing all aboard.
  • Disqualifiers?
    • No Freudian Excuse, no loved ones, no regret.
    • Doesn't seem to really care about his men (not necessarily a Bad Boss, but nothing that stops him from being a CM).
    • He thinks he's saving or redeeming America, but his goals aren't really WIE-worthy.
  • Heinous Standard?
    • Just wiping out those cities alone would likely cause 10s of millions of deaths, probably right up there with Killian (different book, but same continuity). And even if not, he doesn't need to kill as many to accomplish his goals.
    • Then there's the racism.
    • As for the other bad guys (Yeah, it's more confusing than I remember it being [lol]. You've basically got the good guys, Caesar and his men, and the three factions below):
      • You've got the rogue members of 7th Squadron who were hired by China to kidnap Kevin and take him back, but they're more of a group, and aren't terribly heinous.
      • Gunther Botha (one of the scientists) worked on the Sinovirus, and was a bioweapons scientist in South Africa; the President thinks he might try to kill the blacks in South Africa, but A) this is only conjecture, and B) Botha doesn't have enough of a personality (otherwise he may very well count); plus there's the fact that there may be HIS bosses, who aren't even seen.
      • As for the prisoners, who are being used as guinea pigs for the vaccine: They're bad, but, while heinousness wouldn't be an issue (MUCH fewer resources than Caesar and co.), their acts are Offscreen Villainy. Grimshaw, their leader, as far as we know "only" tried to kill the President, while we don't even know what Goliath did. Lucifer Leary WOULD be bad enough (killed 30+ people, ate their limbs in front of them), and he even gets some screentime, but even those killings are only told of; otherwise, he too may count.
  • Final Verdict?
    • I say he counts. Plans to destroy 12 major cities (among them DC, LA, NYC, and Chicago), even if he has to sacrifice himself.
