About the Tsuruya maid for the VN/KN, Last time I was in the IRC (2-3 weeks ago), I think someone was going to make her from scratch for some reason. I have no idea about what happened after that, as all the chat in the logs, aside from the occasional greeting, just died for the last two weeks.

[up][up][up][up][up][up] Hmmm... I'm not going to be tied up and burnt to the stake if I were to show a preference to the Church of Madoka in a thread about a Haruhi Fanfic, am I? tongue

EDIT: Wait, Grahf's still here, so I'm probably safe.

It's not as though anime fandom insists on monotheism, you know.

I think of the anime gods as being similar to the other polytheistic pantheons and, as such, I tend to worship (read: watch/read) as many and as often as I am able, time and funds permitting. XD

It was gonna happen, but no one was sure when. Admittedly, though, I do like to think of anime "gods" as being more like kami. After all, not only do we have Haruhiism and Madokaism, but there's also the Belldandyists, Lainists, Poke-Theists, and the followers of Gurren-kami, among all the others.

@alethiophile:

I seem to recall the first time he's testing Altair and/or Vega, in the hospital after getting shot, it turns into a replica of the gun that shot him.

I forgot about that. I checked the relevant scene (GU-3) and the bit "over-sized model" makes me think (let's say) Altair was merely taking the form of the gun, just like the time where Kyon shaped one of his weapons as the signature prop of Rena's character "Ichigo" in SB-4. However, in the same scene in hospital, just after seeing the gun Kyon wishes for a non-lethal weapon and Altair immediately complies, which could mean the previous form was the real deal, just bigger*

.

Magnetic Weapons are a way around that; you could just use arbitrary metal things lying around for ammo. Or have Kyon carry a lot of coins.

Or arcade tokens.

I wonder if using Japanese currency would be in fact more expensive per unit than a small caliber round. Let me see, there are ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100 and ¥500 coins, probably only the first half would make cheap ammo (¥50 = USD 0.631 = € 0.482, as of today).

Although, taking into account Kyon's personality, if he's ever in need of a way to incapacitate someone at a distance while protecting the masquerade he could morph his weapons into something like a magnetic launcher with the appearance of a riot gun that shoots rubber-coated steel rounds. Most likely it would be still illegal in the onlookers' eyes, but it won't raise the same kind of questions than a futurist-looking Stun Gun.

I would say the latter. IINM, it's the same author of Xmas!Tsuruya, posted here some time ago.

It's interesting to think that the five of them are listed. Trope Overdosed indeed.

Wait a moment. If an Unstoppable Force (Haruhi) meets an Immovable Object (Kyon) the result is... UST? I learned something new in TV Tropes today. I don't know what it is, but I'm sure I was unaware of it until now.

[up]The only official art is of her as a teenager, because I think she appeared that way in a DS game. During the time of Higurashi she's like five and never seen or heard from, only referred to in dialogue. I'd be very surprised if any fanart exists of her as an adult.

[up][up]I'm surprised you didn't know about the Pantheon beforehand, considering I'm almost positive there's links to it in the main Haruhi tropes page (I seem to remember that was how I found the Pantheon myself, but that was a while ago so I can't remember too well).

@Specular: I wonder which was made first, the anime or the game that came from. And which one would be considered canon for Miyuki's appearance, since I don't think she had a sprite in the original VN.

Only reason I ask is because I seem to remember Miyuki making a couple minor appearances in the anime, and she had long, dark hair.

EDIT: Okay, looked at a wiki. Those pictures above actually are an adult Miyuki, when she's already married(lol, continuity marches on). That's Miyuki Sorimachi.

http://whentheycry.wikia.com/wiki/Akasaka_Miyuki

(Miyuki Sorimachi only made an appearance in a DS-exclusive adaptation of a manga-exclusive chapter. Yay!)

There's a picture of a child Miyuki as well, and a shot of the anime's appearance. It looks like child!Miyuki's canon appearance has her with a small side-ponytail, similar to Nonoko's.

EDIT: Random line from that that made me laugh, just because of the name:

"[Sorimachi] Miyuki is a freelance writer set on unraveling the mysteries of Hinamizawa with Arakawa Ryūnosuke."

Speaking of Arakawa, has his first name ever been shown in canon, either KBDH or official? I can't seem to recall such.

Oh, and new chapter up at soulriders, for those that do proofreading. Read it myself, but not gonna have enough time to do an in-depth read for C&C tonight.

She definitely looks more like a teenager in that art either way though. tongue

It's not that Older Than She Looks aspect that confused me, but rather the approachability in her facial expression. I was expecting a more serious-and-stoic-kind-of-frowny face from what I've seen of her internal monologuing and actions in KBDH.

I'm not too clear on which chapters of BDH have been released when, but I think her appearance in BDH predates the DS game she appeared in, so that's probably why - there was no "canon older Miyuki" to draw from at that point.

Besides, we've only ever seen her when she's not only on the job, but elbow-deep in an investigation. She might be more approachable on a personal level.

@Miyuki: That is the investigator who is on Kyon's case? I expected her to look more... intimidating.

How about now?

Miyuki had cover to maintain during the most part of the DS version of Yoigoshi-hen (a continuation of sorts to a bad ended Tsumihoroboshi-hen, the arc where Rena snaps), so she had a very good reason to look as unintimidating as possible.

For some reason I got curious about the weapon in the picture and I tried to identify it. The gun is a semi-automatic pistol (apparently missing its iron sights) and it looks a lot like SIG Sauer. Considering how rare the semi-autos are within the Japanese police (in the most of cases a simple revolver is enough thanks to anti-firearms laws), a short Wiki Walk suggests that someone working undercover like Miyuki at the time of Yoigoshi-hen (2007) could have carried a SIG Sauer P230JP (pic), a variant of the P230 made by SIG and licenced produced by Minebea. Very close, but it's not a perfect match IMHO. If I have to bet I would say it's a SIG-Sauer P228 (used by the SAT) because of the reasons listed in the link.

@Specular: I wonder which was made first, the anime or the game that came from. And which one would be considered canon for Miyuki's appearance, since I don't think she had a sprite in the original VN.

AFAIK, she didn't.

IINM, the first portrayal of child!Miyuki was in the anime (aired on 2006-2007), but I don't remember the specific episode. Her second appearance was in one of the DVD covers together with her parents. It seems her visual characterization went through a minor remaking for the second instalment (released on November 27, 2008) of DS series "Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kizuna" and her adult self debuted on the in third one (released on May 28, 2009).

EDIT: Okay, looked at a wiki. Those pictures above actually are an adult Miyuki, when she's already married(lol, continuity marches on). That's Miyuki Sorimachi.

Maybe there is a In-Universe reason for that. Sorimachi Miyuki comes from one of Bad Endings of Higurashi, and it seems her mother only survives in the Golden Ending, which is the case for kbdh!Miyuki. If this is true, then we have a major divergence point between both alternate selves. Perhaps the presence of both parents in her life allowed kbdh!Miyuki to be invest more time and energy in her career, which could explain why she is a high-ranking NPA agent and she didn't marry in this timeline.

Potential WMG

There is something that bugs me about Miyuki's eyes. Can you guess what it is?

[up][up]I'm surprised you didn't know about the Pantheon beforehand, (...)

I knew about the Pantheon, but I never went beyond a cursory inspection*

. Even now I haven't because these pages contain a lot of spoilers about series I haven't watched yet.

Bonus pic.

While I was looking for more Miyuki related material I found a nice omake picture of Rika and Rena. After further searching I located a better resolution of the same and then I hit the jackpot (2251x3513, 3.99 M).

*Disembarks from an overhead helicopter, just like a certain random sky diver.*

Hey, Guys! Guess what? We almost finished all the sprites, even if some are godawful ugly and i'll have to remake those personally. Now, i have homework for you. First of all, please dump all the relevant pictures (like those wonderful ones of our Akasaka policewoman, specular) in a publicly accessibly place.

Ah yes, First of all: Spec, why don't you make the relevant parts of your photobucket public, in a gallery? Same goes for Oroboro, by the way. No sense in having one if it's all secreted, don't you think.

Secondly: Our VN team has collapsed (much later than some had anticipated, so i win my bets). It started with Oroboro's relocation on Pluto or Saturn (by how much i hear of him nowadays, it has to be somewhere that far!) and soon most others followed suit. The ones remaining are there, and helped me pay outsourced art. It's not enough.

I still care, so this is my last plea to you. If you do want to see this project finished, step forward and -work-. If not, i'll dismiss the art team and consider myself free to draw, i don't know, Artemis Fowl fanart. That book is pretty great, good inspiration.

Agasa out.

[up][up]For clarity's sake, is it still art you need help with, or do you need coders now? I'm not sure from your post, and I suspect you'll have an easier time finding the latter. I'd help out myself if I didn't have so much on my plate already. sad

To clarify: Coders. Rather, as there's no code involved but instead, basically, doing a screenplay from the text, i prefer to call it Screenwriters.

It's an easy job, you just have to follow a few guidelines that i'll be happy to give you.

Also to clarify, if you guys are not interested, it's not that i'll burn everything and piss on the remains, i can't even do that; I'll just give up and haul the project to the Development Hell train until The Chosen Many come along.
