    Original post
Rant Inducing Slight is intended for cases where a character repeatedly has their buttons pressed but remains calm, only for a minor provocation to finally get them angry. However, a lot of examples are for instances where the character was not pestered previously. There is also misuse for examples that are not slights and/or are not rant-inducing. Rant Inducing Slight Wick Check shows that most examples are misuse.

If the rename option wins, which looks unlikely. Though we can decide if the merged page needs a new name or Rage Breaking Point is fine.

[up][up]It assumes the trope remains as-is because nobody suggested a new definition. Plus, the top option has so many votes that I don't see the need to do another rename crowner.

I just saw that it's been long enough that this can be called in favor of merging with Rage Breaking Point, so I'm going to do that now.

As a side note, I'm hesitant to rename Rage Breaking Point unless someone does a wick check for it as well. Its high wick count (a little over four times as high as Rant Inducing Slight's wick count) means renaming it would make cleanup take much longer than the current project of dewicking Rant Inducing Slight alone.

I wouldn't see a reason to rename unless someone does the big check and can prove that it's necessary.

I still think the misuse of Rant Inducing Slight is tropeworthy as a subtrope of Disproportionate Retribution. And it would cover Berserk Button misuse too.

I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

[up]Since it's already been agreed on that this will be merged with Rage Breaking Point, that will have to go to something like Law of Disproportionate Response or Comical Overreacting instead.

[up][up] Maybe you could take the proposed subtrope to the TLP and see if it gains traction. The decision to merge was already made, but if you think the misuse is a viable trope, I see no reason not to give it a trial.

I don't have the time/energy to TLP it right now (TLP is not a free action to me since it takes a lot of energy to make a decent draft), I was just saying my piece in case someone else shared my opinion. (Plus there's a slim chance Berserk Button could be broadened in turn.) I brought this idea up before the vote too, cuz I didn't want it to be that person who only brings up ideas after the vote.

Now that you mention that, I think I'm going to turn Rant Inducing Slight into a disambiguation page between those instead of turning into a redirect.

Edit: Done. I changed the page type and removed all indexing except for Ambiguity Index. The original contents were moved to Sandbox.Rant Inducing Slight in case anyone needs them.

[up]I don't know what point you're trying to make. We agreed to merge with Rage Breaking Point, and when tropes are merged, cut, or renamed, turning the old name into a disambiguation page is a free action; no mod fiat required.

There have been times when a crowner explicitly called for redirecting, such as Shocking Swerve being redirected to Ass Pull, but this was a merge vote and not a redirect vote.

[up]TBH I've always thought merging means redirecting. But I guess since the old page is effectively de-troped anyway I suppose it doesn't really matter whether it's redirected or disambiguated.

Wick Check

Rant Inducing Slight is intended for cases where a character repeatedly has their buttons pressed but remains calm, only for a minor provocation to finally get them angry. However, some examples are for instances where the character was not pestered previously.

50/50

    Correct use 10/ 50
  • Hunters of Justice: Remnant: Played for Laughs, along with Mirthless Laughter, Rage Breaking Point, and temporary Sanity Slippage. After chasing down Hogzilla for three days straight with only hunting equipment before finally killing it with the help of the people of Andrews, Texas, RWBY, JNPR, and the Titans all return to the Watchtower, tired, frustrated, and with several coolers of pork. Superman's first reaction is to call their week productive. This sets Ruby off, and she starts shouting at him about how horrible and exasperating the experience was.
  • RuneScape: After slogging through One Small Favour, they finally get Yanni's logs, and all Yanni says is, "Well, that's absolutely wonderful my friend! Many thanks!" They completely lose it, and chew out poor Yanni (who doesn't know anything about what you've been doing, and is completely bewildered).
  • In the finale, during the opinion matching task, Killer Fatigue caused Jo to reach a breaking point, and she went off on Paul. Which led to: "Which led to" refers to the next trope listed, which is "The Reason You Suck" Speech. Sounds like it counts, since they were doing a hard task.
  • CharacterizationMarchesOn.Western Animation: Quagmire's vendetta with Brian was also quickly altered in the course of only two seasons. Starting with "Jerome Is the New Black", a Running Gag began with Brian trying to kiss up to Quagmire only to accidentally offend him into a Rant Inducing Slight; as episodes passed, Brian began to make subtle retorts back at Quagmire, who became increasingly vindictive and lashed at Brian more gratuitously. This reached the boiling point in "Tiegs For Two" where both are Sitcom Arch Nemesises and Brian is even less capable of hiding his utter disgust and contempt for Quagmire and vice versa, and eventually starts a very personal Escalating War. Following this, the feud became Running Gagged and they converse with each other normally outside a handful of very subtle conflicts.
  • One Minute Melee Season Three: Although Silver repeatedly hitting him with progressively-smaller boulders whilst screaming "It's no use!" annoyed him enough already, being bonked on the head with a pebble is what really sets him off.
    Trunks: DIE!
  • Sliders S 03 E 13 Murder Most Foul: Arturo is on edge from a bad mood and sliding into some garbage. He loses it when one of the locals accidentally spills some coffee on him.
  • Lost Food Grievance: And this is completely understandable when enjoying some Comfort Food, or Post-Stress Overeating is involved, since this happening atop other stresses can only end badly.
  • Kyousogiga: After constantly being annoyed by Koto and her familiars' antics, Myoe rants how he hates staying in Mirror Kyoto for a long time and is irritated at Koto.
  • AtopTheFourthWall.Storyline Tropes: Used in the MMPR review. Mechakara has been exasperated by Linkara for the past eight months through plans being inadvertently interrupted or getting the wrong results, yet he has remained relatively calm... but it is Linkara's voice that finally gets him to start yelling.
  • There And Back Again RP: During the confrontation with Kaldor Draigo, NiGHTS is initially just annoyed the grey knight with Shakespearean accent is blocking the way of the group and is willing to just be a dignity-ruining prankster... until he mentions the word that goes against the jester's very own nature: order. Then NiGHTS goes on a rant showing indignation for anyone following order (...which turns out to be Kaldor's own last straw against the group).
  • Fractale: It's implied that Gail has been through his share of critics criticizing his sculptures, and Phryne's innocent comment of his recent sculpture resembling something of a worm is what puts him over the edge.
  • Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan: When Hisone backs out of flying Masotan at the last moment, Kakiyasu tells her if she felt like that she should have spoken up sooner. This sets Hisone off, starting with pointing out that, as a matter of fact, she did speak up fifteen times before and was summarily ignored. She then goes on to compare Nao to a grade schooler, complete with attitude, and finishes off with the fact she likes orange yogurt, not the strawberry she was given.
  • Characters.Ambience A Fleet Symphony Three: her tantrum in chapter 299 doesn't start as one, but it becomes one when Suzukaze yells back at her that she should've offed herself so that she wouldn't need to suffer being isolated for so long.

Misuse (no previous pestering) 16/ 50
  • Hypnospace Outlaw: Towards the software of Hypnospace. He releases video rants alongside his cosmetics, which work to educate users on how to use their UI better.
  • Medaka Box: Kumagawa's slight towards card games puts him into a murderous rage.
  • Monsterhearts While The Witch is normally an Extreme Doormat, their Darkest Self drives them to hex anyone at the smallest slight with a power more effective and unexpected. Fits better under Hair-Trigger Temper
  • Calvin and Hobbes: The Hamster Huey gag is played on when his dad snaps from being forced to read it every single night and instead gives them a new take on the story. Calvin just asked his dad to read it in the same manner he always asked him to read it. This was no more of a slight than the previous times.
  • Mafalda: Libertad's talking about cats. Why do you mention you prefer dogs? She's talking about cats, not dogs, which do not pertain to the sphere of the current discussion! WHY CAN'T YOU PEOPLE BE SIMPLE?!
  • 9 Chickweed Lane:
    • Seth upon spotting Roger's mismatched socks.
    • Edda doesn't take her mother comparing one's children to spinach stuck in one's teeth very well She meant all of Roger's children after the second set of twins and how he's stuck in the role of straight dad forever.
  • Literal Genie: The Simpsons. Homer Simpson attempts to avert this in "Treehouse of Horror II"; after the family's first wishes on a Monkey's Paw have unforeseen consequences (thus playing the trope straight), Homer decides to "make a wish that can't backfire. I wish for a turkey sandwich, on rye bread, with lettuce and mustard, and, and I don't want any zombie turkeys, I don't want to turn into a turkey myself, and I don't want any other weird surprises." Surprisingly, this mostly works, except that the turkey's a little dry.
Homer: Hmm. Not bad. Nice, hot mustard. Good bread. Turkey's a little dry. The turkey's a little dry! Oh foul and cursed thing!!! What demon from the depths of Hell created thee?!
Of course that part didn't work: after all, he asked for no weird surprises!
  • Won't Do Your Dirty Work: Goes well with rants of all shapes and sizes.
  • Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger: In Episode 15, Nyorori does not like Corrupted Peter Pan very much, as he's scared of heights when Nyorori loves to fly so much he built a machine to do it.
  • Aggretsuko: The abuse Retsuko takes from her boss and coworkers inspires her angry Death Metal songs.
  • BewareTheNiceOnes.Live Action TV: Josh Nichols is the series Butt-Monkey, but very decent and caring. But give him an authority of power like a teacher and see what he can become, as Megan learned. In another episode, when Drake makes him miss his important chemistry exam, Josh angrily tries to beat him up on the spot.
    Josh: (points at Drake) You!
    Drake: What?
Josh: Raaaaaaaaaaah! Come here! Come here, you wanna tussle!
  • Characters.Batman Rogues Gallery Part 1: Sionis often throws unnecessary tantrums with little provocation, particularly when written by Judd Winick.
  • Fairy Tail – Saber Tooth: More of sadness than anger. After Natsu catches up with her just to apologize for being so cold to her for being in Saber Tooth, Yukino bursts into tears over how he can treat her with kindness so casually, and she lets her emotions come out over her own guild master admonishing and expelling her.
  • Jurassic Park – InGen: The incredible mess on his work station at the Jurassic Park control room is evidence enough of this (and makes Arnold pretty damn angry when he has to start un-hacking Nedry's hack).
Arnold: Look at this workstation! What a complete slob!
  • Pokémon Protagonists and Rivals: Galar: The one time she ever loses her temper is after Team Yell tries to block access to Spikemuth just to try and help Marnie. She's less than impressed, tearing into Team Yell over it.
  • The Crown (2016): Foreign Dignitaries and Leaders: He's incredibly offended when Eden and his entourage turn up to a diplomatic dinner in dinner jackets, and he apparently didn't get the note on the dress-code. Though Eden believes, and it's heavily implied, that Nasser actually knows exactly what's going on and any offense is actually insincere and stage-managed in order to create anti-British sentiment that will enable Nasser to more easily win the support of the people for his goals.
  • Strong Bad Email E 110 For Kids: Strong Bad threatens to kill the kids and their dogs all because they can't give a better answer to "Where's The Cheat?" than "over there".
  • Characters.Bones: Being called a "Fry cook? FRY COOK?!" after his retirement.
  • Characters.Cooking With Wild Game: After Asuta comments (hypothetically) that he would be honoured to marry her, she tackles him to the ground and accuses him of disgracing her pride as a hunter. This is one reason he doesn't bring up the subject again.
  • Two And A Half Men S 1 E 22 My Doctor Has A Cow Puppet: Alan losing his tempter whenever the restaurant screws up his order of pancakes, or a table won't stop wobbling.
  • Loves Only Gold:
    • Smaug, who destroys the dwarf kingdom of Erebor and the human city of Dale to obtain the famous hoard of King Thrór. He has no practical use for it, being a dragon and all, having it just to have it, and flying into a murderous rage and attacking the nearby human settlement of Lake-town (all that remains of Dale) because Bilbo stole a gold cup in order to prove his prowess as a burglar to Thorin. J. R. R. Tolkien describes Smaug as experiencing what basically amounts to "rich people's anger" at the loss of this one single solitary item from the treasure hoard.
  • Won't Do Your Dirty Work: Goes well with rants of all shapes and sizes.

    Other misuse 11/ 50
When Chris asks her if she has a question, Heather rants about how she deserved to win and was robbed by bad luck and incompetent teammates. Not a slight

    Unsure 4/ 50
  • The Annotated Series: Has a tendency to start really laying into an episode only after a relatively minor thing; for example, the "garbanzo beans" that didn't even slightly resemble garbanzo beans in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, and "lend a hand" instead of "lend a hoof" seeming contrary to the use of "everypony" in the MLP stage show.
  • Late for School: In Project A-Ko, A-ko wakes up late every single day, and must run at supersonic speeds to school, dragging C-ko behind her, and leaving a trail of shattered windows. She only stops treating B-ko as an Unknown Rival when finds out not even getting up early to avoid her ambushes before school works.
  • Wall of Text: A second-season episode of Ed, Edd n Eddy, "Key to My Ed", featured an auditory version of this when Edd experienced a Rant Inducing Slight, the titular key having been flicked into the gap in his front teeth. His rant, about how he perceived Eddy prefer whoever the key belonged to would suffer, went through a change in scenes.
Edd: Mortified? Yes. But I won't let myself fall prey to such shallow emotion. Not now.
  • Awesome. The Irate Gamer:On his IRate The '80s video series, he also came up with the "Breakfast is Ruined!" line (over how Lucky Charms changed shapes over time) that spawned its own hurricane of memes soon after.

    ZCE 1/ 50
  • Koihime†Musou Anime: In her rant on how she's going to torture the fake Ryuubi, complete with demonic Facial Markings.
