Anyone, besides me, who generally doesn't hate characters considered The Scrappy or Creator's Pet? I usually don't have this reaction to characters (then again, I'm not the most critical partaker of media). The only character who fell into this trap that I didn't like (as far as I can remember) was Megan.

Hey, I'm like that too!

Sure, these "Scrappies" or "Creator's Pets" may not be on my favorite characters list, but I almost never get annoyed by them.

Some examples...

  • Luke fon Fabre (prior to his character development): As whiny as he was, I couldn't really hate him. Maybe it's my overly-empathetic and relateable nature to characters like him.
  • In my time of (barely) playing Blazblue, I never found Noel Vermillion annoying. I found her a little endearing, to be honest. Nor do I think she's a creator's pet.

So yeah, you're not alone.

Me too!

Hell, there's been many times where I've seen my favorite character in some work being listed as The Scrappy.

It depends on how they're written. I've liked some Scrappies that others hated, but the rest I completely understood the hatred full-heartedly.

I can't exactly think of a Scrappy character that I actually like per say, but it does bother me whenever a Hate Sink character ends up on there {Unless it's an example where said character actually detracts from the work's quality or if said Hate Sink stuff comes up as a result of character derailment}, like for example Chaka from Black Lagoon. I'm pretty sure that most Scrappy characters are not suppose to be intentionally annoying and unlikeable, so by defination the vast majority of Hate Sink characters should not belong on that trope.

I don't really hate Scrappy and/or Wesley Crusher at all but it has more to do with that they are just boring rather than annoying I also never understood the hatedom for Scrappy, he was an annoying puppy dog but he was mostly the fearless fool who really looks up to his uncle.

[up] Scrappies tend to get hatred when their presence tends to derail whatever work they're in. In Scrappy-Doo's case, it came when the show abandoned other supporting characters in favor of Scrappy, and when the show's format changed from Scooby and the gang solving mysteries and became Scooby, Shaggy, and Scrappy mostly running from monsters. I think it's that violation of the show's basic premise in order to accommodate Scrappy's character that led to the hate.

Just as a character, I don't hate Scrappy. I like him better as a regular or semi-regular character than, say, Scooby-Dum. But I prefer the show without him, and don't care at all for the era where Scooby-Doo was just Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy.

I never had a problem with Scrappy-Doo himself. I didn't even know people hated him until I found TV Tropes.

I never really hated Scrappy either. In fact, I even kinda wish WB would bring him back out and actually improve him as a character instead of taking a dump on the character every time they bring him out. The dislike for Scrappy is just something for adults at this point and kids are not going to have any idea why everyone hates this random puppy whenever he shows up.

Man, I genuinely like Scrappy-Doo. In fact, I think the Scooby-Doo franchise in general is weaker for getting rid of him. I never thought Navi or Fi were all that annoying, either.

Also, Aelita was my favorite character in Code Lyoko, despite being widely decried as a Damsel Scrappy and/or The Load.

EDIT: Oh, and I realize Vriska Serket is more polarizing than an outright Scrappy, but she may be my favorite fictional character ever.

Speaking of scrappy, I am beginning to find the "jokes" about Scrappy being somewhat annoying and Scrappy was even the Big Bad of the movie. I understand why they hate the character and what even 'symbolizes' but he isn't the Devil, he is just an annoying kid. I also never understood the hatred for Fi and Navi either.

Aelita was the Load? Wasn't she useful in later seasons?

A lot of people like to shit on Kouko from Golden Time. A lot of people think she's clingy or that she's a bitch. I like her. While she's not a perfect character, i don't think she's as bad as people like to say she is.

I also don't understand why Tidus from Final Fantasy X seems to get shit from people on the internet. I think that he's a pretty good character. I hate that people say that he's got daddy issues or that he's whiny.

Is there a reverse, like disliking a liked character?

Cuz I tend to do that a lot. Maybe I'm just a contrarian.

No, it must be everyone else who's wrong.

[up] Yeah.

For example, Envy. I honestly hate his character. To me, they're a irredeemable jerk, with barely any redeeming qualities, unlike the other hommunculi. I don't get why they are so popular.

I didn't hate Scrappy-Doo, either. Then again, I was a kid, so maybe I'd feel differently if I watched something with him in it now that I'm an adult.

[up]X6: She learned an offensive spell (so to speak) in season three, and also they made it so she didn't die if she lost all her life points. But for all of season one and two, she could basically do nothing in combat but run and shriek.

I honestly never really cared too strongly for Scrappy-Doo or Navi. I found Scrappy to be generally unfunny, and Navi just kind of there. Didn't find her that annoying.

Envy is liked because he has no redeeming qualities; he is the only one to be a straight-up villain in both continuities. He is a Love to Hate figure, not a likeable character.

I have to say that I never hated Neelix as much as most of the fandom seems to, though I hardly ever found his comic relief funny. Kes however grated on my nerves for her unwavering smiling expression. I only liked her in Fury (and that episode where her mind is taken over by a warlord).

Then there's The Order of the Stick's Miko. She was mostly hated, and intentionally, but I liked her for saying out loud what kind Belkar is and why the party should not be including him and covering for what he does.

I generally don't dislike characters but more bad uses of them, especially a certain vein of comic relief in American cartoons that centres around punishing someone repeatedly for things the rest of the cast does without trouble. Sokka was an egregious example in a fine show.

Sokka got teased a lot by the other characters, but his ingenuity was always celebrated. I can't think of many instances of him being crapped on for no reason.

I actually like some of the witnesses that are often hated for being annoying in the Ace Attorney series (Oldbag, Lotta Hart, Mike Meekins, and Moe the clown). They were irritating, yes, but I also found them kind of endearing or amusing for some reason. I also never had a problem with Navi, mainly because I royally sucked at Ocarina of Time and it was helpful for her to keep me on track a bit.

I don’t even know anymore.

The only Zelda character I kind of dislike is Tingle, but not because he's annoying. He creeps me out because I never really "buy" that he's as innocent as he appears. I get the feeling he's only pretending to be a ditzy Manchild. Tingle is fucking up to something.

Hyrule Warriors kind of redeemed him, though. Hyrule Warriors redeemed a lot of things for a lot of people, it seems.

I don't mind either Navi or Tatl from The Legend of Zelda. I like them both (Tatl morseo). And I like Raoul from The Phantom of the Opera, even though it's very popular to hate him. It might have to do with the fact that I think the Phantom ending up with Christine is a horrible idea too.
