The former, as it is an excellent way to bring across character development to an audience, as the conflict and struggles of a lovable character are much more interesting than simply George RR Martin-ing the hell out of them for the lulz, although that can bring conflict to the other characters as well as the audience.
I just felt like garbage there for a moment, why.
