I'm not sure when this was opened so I'll hold off on clocking it. Bumping.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.I've rewritten that 40K Orks example to clear out the trope.
I can see a broadening of the trope definition.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhat's the difference between that and Flanderization?
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Flanderization is when a minor character trait over time is exaggerated until the character is defined solely by said trait.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlthough it is noted that Flanderization has gotten misuse for the expanded definition. Changing the definition would make Flanderization a specific type of Character Exaggeration.
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.So Character Exaggeration would be "character trait is exaggerated over time or in adaptations/reboots/etc", while Flanderization is "minor character has a minor trait that eventually becomes the entirety of their characterization"?
I foresee misuse based on disagreements over what constitutes a "minor" character and whether they're a Flat Character with exactly one trait or simply have that one trait emphasized more than their others.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Flanderization does not require a minor character.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanFlanderization was in TRS recently: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1399094802011642100&page=4#89
Link to TRS threads in project mode here.So Character Exaggeration would be a supertrope for things like Flanderization, Adaptation Character Exaggeration (assuming we're going to port Character Exaggeration's current definition to a new trope), etc? I can see that, it makes sense to me.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Clock is set.

Character Exaggeration is when a work that gets adapted into another medium emphasizes or deemphasizes character traits from the original work.
Bias: I think the name is too broad for the definition. I would prefer Character Exaggeration to be used in any work where a character’s traits are emphasized or deemphasized, without accompanying Character Development.
Prediction: Character Exaggeration is being used for Continuity Reboot works, and over time within the same work. I’m expecting less than 80% of the works mention “adaptation”.
