Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.
This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.
Common problems include:
- Conversation on the Main Page
- Flame Bait
- Squicky content
- Impossible in Real Life
Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.
If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.
If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.
Before adding to the crowner:
- The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
- There must be support from others in thread.
- Any objections should be addressed.
- Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.
When adding to the crowner:
- Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
- Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
- An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).
In order for a crowner to pass:
- Must have been up for a minimum of a week
- There must be a 2:1 ratio
- If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
- Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
- Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page
Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.
Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.
After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
- This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
- Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
- As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
- The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

But aside from him and a few other guys, it is very, very YMMV. I think Pius XII was an evil man (ignoring the Holocaust and all that) but not all people would agree with that.
The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundOr another example from And There Was Much Rejoicing Discussion:
Dynamic Dragon: Why no real life examples? Sure, "respect for the dead" and all that, but it's not us who are celebrating. It's the public. All we are doing is discussing their reactions.
Joesolo: That's true, plus how is it the wiki "shows respect to the dead, regardless of who they were" if we've got Stupid Jet Pack Hitler as a trope?
I'm stating that as an example of someone we shouldn't respect of course.
I can imagine Bin ladin [sic] would be a good example as well. there were basically street parties when he got shot.
Me: Those are pretty uncontroversial, but there are other examples that would just be asking for a Flame War if allowed. For example, a British coal miners' union responded to news of Margaret Thatcher's demise with the message, "Good riddance."
Once you start moving away from Those Wacky Nazis, some tropes are just Grade-A Flame Bait when you allow real life.

I'm too lazy to look it up, but who's that actress who originally took that (thoroughly-disproven) idea that vaccines 'cause' autism and ran with it? I consider her a very sad person who was probably looking for any reason to 'prove' that whatever is wrong with her son (which may not be autism) was not her fault.
Others might consider her evil for her influence on anti-vaccination, others might consider her wonderful for the same reasons.
It's cases like that that lead to 'don't call real people evil' for the greater part of the population. They may be very very wrong, but that doesn't mean they're evil -whatever the results of their actions are.
And vaccination can be a total flamebait convo, so NO COMMENTARY about it in this thread please. It is meant as a highly visible example of why we don't take the risk of calling real people evil.

That actress would be Jenny McCarthy.

CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsGoddamned Bats had the similar problem as Demonic Spiders since their RL page is long.
This trope's about VG enemies.
Not to mention it is nothing but complaining. Kill it.
I think we should add Dirty Old Woman for the same reasons as Dirty Old Man.
Added GD Bats. That RL section is a mess. And pop-up, autoplay, and other ads??? That strikes me as a shoehorn.
Will hunt up the reasons for Dirty Old Man.
And please -please, please, please- remember to timestamp when adding an entry. The entries have to be up a minimum amount of time and get a minimum of 10 votes before they can be called.
To timestamp, after inserting the entry, hit the little book icon in its section, copy the time that comes up, then edit to insert it. Use double backslashes -the one above the enter key on the average keyboard- to force the next line.
Edit: Added Dirty Old Woman to the crowner.

Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettAlcoholic Parent because we don't want the gossip also.
edited 10th Mar '14 6:56:04 PM by kokoroanime
^ Yeah, since The Alcoholic is already NRLEP there's no reason for Alcoholic Parent to have an RL section, as far as the purpose of this wiki is concerned.
(I know you borrowed the description from the entry for The Alcoholic, but it's not obvious to everyone. )

Also, waiting on calling World of Badass to also catch For the Evulz at the same time, as it hits the 48 hr mark later tonight.

- For the Evulz: Added 8th Mar '14 at 11:23:59 PM, 4:1 (15)
- World of Badass: Added 8th Mar '14 at 06:28:10 PM, 3.75:1 (19)
I know For the Evulz has been called, but I think it COULD have some valid usage, because it refers to evil actions, not evil people. As in, most of us would agree that, say, rape as a tactic of war is an evil action - without necessarily calling the general who turned a blind eye to it himself "evil."
Edit:
So I'm suggesting this one be reopened but as a compromise: people cannot be described as evil per the rules, but people's actions can be listed as examples of For the Evulz, when objective evidence proves there was no other objective other than to do something uniquely evil (e.g. there wasn't even ANY other motive but to harm someone - e.g. no financial or territorial gain, no settlement of a grudge or vendetta, no sexual fulfillment, no NOTHING except the desire to kill or hurt a human being or animal -or many of them - just because one could.)

To paraphrase many a moderator and admin statement, TV Tropes is about tropes in media. Fiction. Not real life.
Real life sections are an add-on and side project. Some tropes are NRLEP'd by default. Others are voted on.
Even though we vote on Villain tropes, the general and repeated consensus is they shouldn't have RL examples.
Actions vs the people who committed them strike me as splitting hairs and opening the door to many an example where the troper says, "I didn't say the person was evil, I was just talking about what they did. I just used bad phrasing!" Sorting that out will give the mods massive headaches, particularly since it is such a fine line in most cases.
And in the end, it comes down not only to For the Evulz being a villain trope, but the trope definition specifically saying it's about a villain's motivations.
Entries just discussing actions would be shoehorning.

Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettI think Alpha Bitch should be added to No Real Life Examples Please for the same reasons as Jerkass.
That One Player's Video Game section is a list of games that has skilled players, which is subjective and not tropeworthy. It should only have In-Universe examples.
I brought up Alpha Bitch before. I still think it should be NRLEP, and the one example can be moved to Literature.
Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving. -Terry PratchettNot sure Timey-Wimey Ball should be listed, considering time travel isn't (currently) possible in Real Life.
Added Alpha Bitch, with part of the reason paraphrasing the reason for Jerkass being NRLEP.
Edit: Took a look and added Timey Wimey Ball. I can't sort out the physics explanations to know if that even makes sense, but I can spot shoehorning on the astronaut and technology ones. The Higgs-Boson one has link as example/ZCE issues, too.

ARE the Real Life Timey-Wimey Ball examples shoehorning?
CM Dates; CM Pending; CM DraftsThose all look like shoehorning to me. Timey-Wimey Ball is impossible in Real Life as far as we know.
