Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

I just cut it. Too much trouble. We are about storytelling, not storytellers

The 9 Chickweed Lane page needs serious attention. I don't like the comic strip much myself, but this is really excessive, so perhaps someone with a more neutral attitude toward the work can have a go at it?

The article on Transformers All Hail Megatron has some complaining in the entires. See the ones that page's entires for Decompressed Comic, Did Not Do The Research, Jerkass, Show, Don't Tell, Ted Baxter. And maybe a few others. Also rather natter-y, that page.

Update: Cleaned up Nine Chickweed Lane (the main, YMMV and WMG pages), since there were apparently no takers.

Some fucking idiot wrote Showgirls before no negativity was really being enforced. I've cleaned it a little but I don't think that went far enough.

It also needs to be namespaced but I realize that's a different thread.

While we're discussing Real Life sections, Gold Digger probably needs some cutting up too.

I agree. I would think just about any characterization that is perceived as negative should have No Real Life Examples Please.

Author Tract just devolves into back and forth bickering in some of the examples.

Headscratchers.House has a fair amount of It Just Bugs Me leftovers. I have never seen the series and also I am not sure how much is OK to remove from a Headscratchers page, so I am not comfortable cleaning it up.

I know Headscratchers.Gargoyles has some IJBM leftovers too, but I'm familiar with that series. May I please have some guidelines for how severely to prune a Headscratchers page? What sort of things to cut or not cut in the grey areas?

Of the main headscratchers page: "Note: This is for sincere questions, and discussing Fridge Logic. Not stealth complaining like "Why does <insert anything here> suck so much?". That's why we axed the original name, "It Just Bugs Me"."

[up]I know, but I need more guidelines than that. I am afraid to just chainsaw a whole page. There are grey area entries.

In this post to a since locked thread, Mag Bas recommended cutting all Headscratchers pages about tropes, and Judgement seconded. If Headscratchers for tropes shall be cut, then where would have been a better place to post the sorts of requests currently posted in Headscratchers.Super Deformed and Headscratchers.Half Dressed Cartoon Animal? Is it "complaining" to ask for clues that would help sustain a viewer's Willing Suspension of Disbelief in works using a given trope?

Maybe move them to Analysis.

But this is more Wiki Talk discussion.

Hype Aversion seems to be just inviting negativity with allowing examples. Should no examples should be allowed on the trope page, similarly to Hype Backlash? Also, should this go to TRS? I'm sort of new to this page fixing thing.

The description for No Indoor Voice could definitely use some revising. It sounds horrible. The examples look okay to me though.

Novelization almost comes across as a dis-recommendation page. Is there any way of approaching this?
