Removing complaining, bashing and other negativity from the wiki

Go To

Inspired by this thread, I've noticed that this wiki doesn't have a dedicated cleanup thread for negativity.

As we all know, Complaining About Shows You Don't Like, Creator Bashing and other negativity isn't desired on the wiki, except in a few selected areas like reviews and several Darth Wiki pages (and even then, with limitations). And yet, it's one of the most common sins wiki contributors can make.

So, if you find a page, TLP or discussion whose content seems like a straight-up insult or any other bitching - including complainy soapboxing -, you might ask here for help with removing said content.

The sandbox for this project is located at Works That Require Cleanup of Complaining.

[up] Yeesh. An overabundance of text copied straight from the source, too. Not a legally questionable amount, but the page is basically a synopsis, a snide "analysis" of why his work sucks, and then a bunch of snippets put on showcase to point and laugh at how bad they are.

With this topic well-known, maybe people should offer-up editing advice in a less rude and more friendly way? And to prevent bashing altogether, how about the staff creates less vague and ambiguous help sections while making it easier to edit trope pages

[up] Well, this would be a perfect example of non-constructive criticism: announcing vague problems with no evidence and demanding change without concrete suggestions.

First of all, I'd just like to clarify that I hate Ancient Aliens. But our page on it is just one huge bash-fest. It deserves it, IMO, but it's still against policy, so. (Also, the Dan Browned entry would fit better under Documentary of Lies, since Ancient Aliens claims to be nonfiction.)

Same issue on One More Day - it's a very complainy description.

While not a terrible example, Easily Forgiven has a lot of examples that are quite negative in tone and border on Complaining About Shows You Dont Like. Or rather, complaining about individual characters.

To trope, or not to trope...that is the question.

Superior Spider Man is almost entirely negative. There's virtually no acknowledgement the book had a fandom, which it did.

Super Smash Bros. is absolutely full of bitching. This one is especially bad because many of the examples are straight up misuse for things that really belong under The Scrappy, Scrappy Mechanic, or similar tropes. Broken Base needs to have more than one point of view.

The description for Jupiter Ascending is entirely focused on how bad the movie is. The only objective part of the description is the release date.

Eeesh, that's pretty bad. Aren't descriptions supposed to not contain any opinions, to the point of not being allowed to even mention actual critical reception?

I don't see why critical reception can't be allowed, as long as it's from, y'know, actual critics.

[up]Critical reception is 100% irrelevant to what actually matters on this wiki: tropes. We're interested in tropes and how works use them, not how awesome a given work is or how much it sucks.

Is it just me, or do the quotes on the Chroma Key quotes page here sound a bit too negative?

Yeah, too many complaints there. I would not mind a wholesale removal.

then we should also remove a equal amount of liking praising and other positivity to make this place neutral then.

This place is not supposed to be "neutral". We just want the work main pages to be opinion-free.

then to be option free you need to be free of both positive and negative options then you can't discriminate like that.

well you can but then you just look like your just cherry picking stuff.

because it look like it's ok to have a option has long has it a positive one but any negativity isn't allowed.

so mindless hating isn't ok (which is fine) but mindless praise(which i find equally offensive to mindless hating) is?

[up] Let's be perfectly clear here. It says right on the front page that we're a wiki for fans of stuff, not "the other thing". We celebrate tropes and their use in fiction, and we expect that our articles will be written by people who enjoy the topics they are writing about.

This does not mean that we permit saccharine gushing: the main articles should avoid hyperbolic language and opinions masquerading as facts. What we've found in years of experience is that the wiki is much more pleasant to read when the tone is humorous, breezy, and slightly snarky at times. Even for "bad" tropes (however, see Tropes Are Tools), we don't need to beat the audience over the head with the fact. Let the tropes speak for themselves.

If you really feel the need to tell everyone how much you hated something, we have Reviews, we have Darth Wiki... those places give people a chance to vent without turning the main articles into the kinds of bile-fests you find elsewhere.

Those folks who can't accept this policy find themselves unwelcome in short order.

Chroma Key is awful. I support the motion to cut everything in there.

OK, after some deliberation I've decided I'm helping with this. Because the amount of gratuitous complaining on this wiki has really been getting on my nerves as of late.

Of the pages of works I like that I frequently browse I can point out three YMMV pages that are huge complaining magnets: Pokémon Diamond and Pearl , Super Smash Bros. , and the one for the Pokémon anime. The last one in particular is like 90% complaining. I'm not sure if this thread covers YMMV pages but these are bad enough I feel something should be done about it.

Two notes related to the Pokemon anime:

1. Certain tropers have made a point of going on a smear campaign against the show and make a point of bashing it in a large portion of their wiki edits. I know Darth Megatron is a frequent offender, but I'm sure there are others and this needs to be stopped.

2. The complaining is leaking into non-YMMV pages in places; on the character page for the Pokemon movies I had to remove some "stealth" complaining (including a really bad misuse of From a Certain Point of View ) from the entries of a pair of characters I'm fond of. (If there's a way to permalink from edit history I can link my changes if necessary.)

Can anything be done about any of these?

[up]Dear God, Super Smash Bros. is bad enough, but its Broken Base subpage is even worse. And yeah, I think YMMV pages are covered by this thread, because we should be documenting opinions from all sides, not just complaining about stuff we personally don't like without giving any sort of proof or documentation that there is another side to the argument.
