You can not go to Utah again after you have eaten Utah and have not eaten.Depeche Mode - "New Life" (Listening to the Speak & Spell- a.k.a the first DM album- right now. Great stuff, totally different from where they went later, but just as good. Not nearly as dark, for one thing. And a lot more Disco-influenced. I'll credit Vince Clarke with that. Good early Synth-Pop. One part of this tune's a definite Shout-Out to The Beatles- it's around 3 minutes in, you'll know it when you hear it... )
Depeche Mode - "Photographic" (I always got the impression the "pictures" in question were... well, not exactly innocent, if ya catch my drift. Sorta like Duran Duran's "Girls On Film". That aside, it's a rather moody and evocative song, and one of the first real indicators of where they'd be going in the future, musically. It's got a great, ominous, pulsing bassline, some cool synth orchestrations and that cool, twinkly riff that comes in on the second verse. Apparently there's an older version of this on a comp that's actually the first thing the band ever released, too, so there's that... And a pretty sweet EBM cover by Bi God 20. )

You can not go to Utah again after you have eaten Utah and have not eaten.Afrika Bambaataa - "Planet Rock" (Listening to an old homemade 80s Electro mp3 compilation I made a few years back. It has an album worth's each by Cybotron, Afrika Bambaataa, Mantronix and Planet Patrol. There's another one, but I forget what's on it. I'll check it out tomorrow.
This one's a classic, and often pinpointed as the song that started the whole subgenre, though that's a slight oversimplification. It's catchy as hell, with half a dozen hooks- the drum machine programing alone is catchy, as are all of the synth parts- one of which is obviously a slightly modified version of the main riff from Kraftwerk's "Trans-Europe Express". Also, while the rapping may be kinda simple and slow by modern standards, it was pretty damn good for 1982. Pretty much essential listening for the Electro genre, and Electronic Music and Hip-Hop as a whole. )
Cybotron - "Cosmic Car" (More Electro, this time from Juan Atkins' first band. Great music for driving around at night in a gritty Cyberpunk metropolis. Also, that bassline is an Epic Riff. Cybotron were another great Electro act, and early evidence of Juan Atkins' future greatness- he did go on to play a crucial role in the origin and evolution of Techno...)
/ This. This. A million times this.

Liquid Tension Experiment - "Acid Rain"
Friendly Fires - "Hawaiian Air"
@ Quag15: Glad you approve.
Rhythim Is Rhythim (Derrick May) - "Strings Of Life (Original Mix)" (Gotta love some classic Detroit Techno- this one's often considered one of the key songs of the genre. Those synth strings and that piano are plain awesome. Hard to believe a song without an obvious bassline became a dance hit, until you listen to it, then it all makes sense. Crowning Music Of Awesome indeed! )
Haim - "Falling"

New Order - "Fine Time"
I tend to listen to the more danceable tracks from Technique a bit more.
@ Quag15: Sweet, thanks. Also, I tend to listen to all of Technique when I listen to it... Great album, though really all of New Order's work from Movement to Republic is great, IMO.
@ Fuzy 2 K: I always thought it was "callmewhenyoutrytowakemeup", but I could be wrong...
Rage Against the Machine - "Take The Power Back" (All their albums are good, but their first is still the best one they ever did. Funk Metal / Rap Metal rarely ever got better, IMO, though there are a few albums that equal it. Anyone who calls them Nu Metal is WAY off the mark, too... Love the bassline in this one, but then, I'm a sucker for slap bass when it's done well. )
