YMMV / PONY.MOV

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: From "SHED.MOV": Bullying is bad.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Lyra got pregnant with twins after being raped, but doesn't seem too unhappy about it, cheerfully proclaiming that she's going to name them Snoopy and Prickly Pete. "PARTY.MOV" describes her as an "unabashed rape victim."
  • Ass Pull:
    • In "SHED.MOV", Rainbow Dash gets cut in half with a chainsaw. "MAGIC.MOV" revolves around Twilight's attempts at bringing her back to life, to no avail... then "SWAG.MOV" reveals that she wasn't dead, just in a coma, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
    • More of a nose pull, but Spike apparently had the Elements of Harmony stuck up his nose the whole time for no reason. Played for Laughs, of course.
  • Awesome Music:
    • "Just sit back, and relax...WHILE I EAT YOUR BRAINS!!" Creepy or not, there's no denying that "SHED.MOV" has a cool song.
    • Ken Ashcorp's "20 Percent Cooler" closing out the last episode.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: One appears in every episode:
    • Applejack's...trip in "APPLE.MOV".
    • Twilight masturbating in "DRESS.MOV".
    • Whatever it was Spike, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie were doing at the beginning of "SHED.MOV".
    • Spike humping on Twilight at the beginning of "MAGIC.MOV".
    • Discord humping Wolflor in "PARTY.MOV".
  • Broken Base:
    • "SHED.MOV". Some got a good laugh, but others found it more disturbing than funny. It didn't help that it was meant as a direct reference to the infamous Cupcakes (Sergeant Sprinkles) fanfic, which, itself, is this.
    • Earlier, "DRESS.MOV". Many were disgusted by the way it went even further over the top than "APPLE.MOV"; others liked it for the exact same reason. Some considered it racist, while others realized that its attack was on Rarity, and not on the Mexicans.
    • The revelation of Appelox, the Holy Titan of Honesty has elicited mixed responses from followers of the Ask Jappleack Tumblr. While some fans are satisfied with his portrayal, others have found him to be quite ... silly.
  • Continuity Lockout: "SWAG.MOV" features plot elements from the Ask Jappleack Tumblr, particularly the Sword of the Holy Titans, which Rainbow Dash uses to vanquish Discord. Applejack even explicitly references her adventures there.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The R-Dash 5000 has developed a huge following, despite appearing for mere seconds in each of its appearances, due to its catchphrase. Check it out.
  • Fan Nickname: Dashzilla for the giant Rainbow Dash in the Final Battle.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The series' depiction of Fluttershy as a psychotic Fat Albert parody is far more disturbing to watch after Bill Cosby's accusations of (and eventual arrest for) sexual assault.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In "PARTY.MOV", one of the ponies photographing Pinkie Pie about a minute in looks a lot like this OC, but with a different cutie mark and as a Pegasus. He noticed.
      • Also from "PARTY.MOV", in one scene Pinkie sprouts a human finger for the sole purpose of tapping it on a bench. In the Friendship is Magic episode "Too Many Pinkie Pies", one of the Pinkie clones grows her own set of fingers by blowing into her hoof.
      • Many have also compared Pinkie's transformation from a lovable pop icon into a Hard-Drinking Party Girl to Miley Cyrus' similar change around 2013.
    • Fluttershy's muzzle in "SHED.MOV" looks less like Hannibal Lecter and more like Bane's mask.
    • Jappleack's favorite book was revealed as The Very Hungry Caterpillar back in the blog's Q&A format. Fast forward to the reveal of Appelox, who's not only hungry for planar dimensions, but resembles a giant caterpillar...
    • The battle between Rainbow Dash and Discord in SWAG.MOV is remarkably similar to the one between Twilight and Tirek in Twilight's Kingdom.
      • Wolflor looks a bit like Tirek himself.
    • This Ask Jappleack post has Jappleack violently slapping Apple Bloom for getting a pear cutie mark. The Season 7 episode "The Perfect Pear" revealed that the Apple siblings' mother is from the Pear family, making the three of them half Pear.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • This face that Spike made in "SHED.MOV". interpreted by some as Spike's trollface.
    • "Stay out of my shed" and all of its variations is rapidly becoming one as well.
    • "Swag".
    • Spike, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie walking to Fluttershy's shed while making random noises is sometimes captioned with "Meanwhile, at [insert place you want to insult]". The most popular one is "Congress".
  • Moe:
    • Fluttershy, by the standards of this series, slips into this a bit when she says "Don't tease me, I'm shy!"
    • The photographs of Pinkie Pie as a baby, a little filly and a college/highschool(?) graduate. Also, when Pinkie is resting across the narrator's lap at the end of "PARTY.MOV," she's drawn in the typically sweet, cuddly manner of the original series.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Discord crosses it when he kills Apple Bloom. Then, after the time reset, he recrosses it when he tortures Rainbow Dash, by ripping off her wings.
  • More Popular Spin Off: The very first PONY.MOV video was actually a part of the Ask Jappleack Tumblr blog that spun off into its own series.
  • Narm: When we finally got to see the unseen Eldritch Abomination: The Titan of Honesty... It turned out to be a bit more silly than some fans had bargained for.
  • Nausea Fuel: A lot of the content in the videos are guaranteed to make your stomach turn, such as Twilight randomly pooping onscreen in "MAGIC.MOV," Rarity spitting into a glass that she gives to one of her workers to drink in "DRESS.MOV," and pretty much everything inside Fluttershy's shed in "SHED.MOV."
  • Periphery Demographic: Plenty of people have confessed to watching this series when they were still teens or even children, despite being rather clearly intended for an adult audience.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis: To people who were teens when this series was popular, they are more likely familiar with Fluttershy's song, "Gunna Eat'cha Brains" than the Fat Albert theme which it's a parody of.
    • In addition, Fluttershy's voice is based on Fat Albert himself, right down to saying "hey hey hey". This can fly over the heads of younger viewers.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Arguably, "SPIKE.MOV", what with the video only lasting for almost one and a half minutes with Spike trying to do a trick at some tiny skateboard (apparently, Tech Deck) with his fingers while Paco watches and with a twist ending. Considering it was an April Fools' Day video, it might have been justified.
  • Squick: You really do not want to be eating anything while watching this series.
    • Twilight's "clopping" in "DRESS.MOV".
    • When one of Rarity's workers complains about being thirsty, she hawks a loogie right into the glass that's big enough to fill it completely.
    • "Yo, that's my period, ya dumb bitch! That's my period!!"
    • Rainbow's "wingboner" in "SHED.MOV".
    • Spike pulling the worm in Rainbow's face and eating it in "MAGIC.MOV". Lampshaded by the look Twilight gave him when he did.
    • "I think I'm having my period."
      • Combined with lots of puking.
      • "Oh dear God, IT GOT IN MY MOUTH!"
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Yes, the series is based off of a highly popular children's cartoon that's almost completely devoid of any risqué content. No, that does not mean the series is child-friendly (or even family-friendly) in the slightest, with its open profanity, drug references, sexual content, and general abundance of squick.
