YMMV / Engine Sentai Go-onger

Go To

  • Accidental Nightmare Fuel:
  • Awesome Music: A lot of tracks. Go-onger has a really nice soundtrack in general, but to specify:
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • The Engines are often disliked for being rather annoying if not in battle and often considered rip-offs of Cars. They are often liked for their unique personality and traits that are diverse.
    • BOMPER is disliked for being almost utterly useless, and having an annoying voice. He is liked for being very cute, fun, and sometimes having a unique personality like the Engines.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: G5 Prince (see Girl Group on the main page for an explanation).
  • Bizarro Episode: GP 31, which spawned the Girl Group that led to G5 Prince.
  • Complete Monster: While being light-hearted than its predecessors, Crime Minister Yogoshimacritein still stands out as one of the most evil Sentai villains. Ordering his minions to destroy the sound, magic and prism worlds, Yogoshimacritein nearly drives the Gian race to extinction in a bid to gain power for himself. Ravaging Earth when he arrives, Yogoshimacritein sends waves of killer robots to crush any opposition so he can rule supreme. Caring nothing for his own minions, Yogoshimacritein uses two of his loyal followers as human shields to save himself from an attack and later mind controls them to use as Cannon Fodder. His robot army defeated, Yogoshimacritein launches a final crusade to force the eleven braneworlds under his iron-fisted rule.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Gunpei is "Forehead", thanks to a rather unfortunate close-up in the ending sequence.
    • Kegalesia is "Piper" thanks to her costume and her actress's history as an "AV" (Adult Video) performer.
    • "Chicken Hopper" for Hiroto, whose actor played "Kamen Rider Kick Hopper" in Kamen Rider Kabuto; and because he pilots Toripter, a chicken mecha.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Why are the revived Banki from The Movie weaker than they originally were? Because they thrive on pollution, and they were recycled.
  • Fridge Horror: Yogoshimacretein is practically a walking purveyor of fridge horror. Examples include:
    • Given the way he called his own son a useless failure and didn't truly care that he was killed, imagine how he treated poor Yogostein when they are in the same place together.
    • We know what female Engines can give birth after they get married as we saw in the show's tribute episodes of Gokaiger, so it stands to reason that Gaiark robots can too. Given how cruel Yogoshimacretein is shown to be, maybe he's the reason for Yogostein having a Missing Mom.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight:
    • In GP 4, Gunpherd's Engine Cast is taken by a boy who mistakes it for a toy car and takes it home. When asked by Gunpei to return it, the boy hesitates, saying that "it's my precious treasure" but gives it back anyway, and Gunpei promises the boy that "I'll use your treasure with care". In all the following episodes, we see that Gunpei and Gunpherd's partnership holds strong across all of them, with them looking out for each other particularly in GP 28.
    • Even though the Ship Tease between Sosuke and Miu didn't get anywhere, their actors later portrayed lovers in the music video for Metis' "Anata ga Ai wo Kureta kara."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • From GP 37, Engine Banki is intended to be a Take That! on Transformers (it even goes "Toratora"! and "Toransfoomu!"), but crosses into this trope instead as its design and color scheme resemble Skids and Mudflap in their ice cream truck form.
    • A particular Rule 34 fanart of Speedor and BearRV somewhere became all the funnier when Engine Machalcon turned out to be their son.
    • Due to the fact that this show stars a group of googly-eyed Sentient Vehicles, many accused it of being a Cars knockoff, and the bad guys in this show want to pollute the Earth, the bad guys in the sequel to Cars have the exact opposite motive, taking over the world with a clean yet highly explosive fuel source.
    • The colors of the boysnote , who form the idol group G5 Prince, are the same as that of Power Rangers Dino Force Bravenote , a team made up of K-Pop idols to the point that Pink is left out of the soundtrack release.
    • Comparisons between the Go-On Wings with the Southern Base Swordsmen being a Brother–Sister Team are simply too obvious to ignore considering that Reika Shindai/Kamen Rider Sabela is portrayed by Mei Angela, whose real name is Yumi Yamamoto, sharing the same name as Miu's actress Yumi Sugimoto.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Hant and Gunpei are very rarely seen apart and usually get into some awkward moments that some decided to get them connected by their own terms.
    • Saki's interactions with Miu are taken as Les Yay by some.
  • Memetic Mutation: See this page for examples.
  • Moe:
    • Saki is a very energetic girl with a sweet, optimistic personality, refusing to lose her happiness when everything falls apart. Her endearing demeanor has endeared many fans.
    • BOMPER also has a cute voice and enough cute and funny antics to cause audiences to go "awww".
  • Nightmare Fuel
    • Anyone "photographed" by Camera Banki gets sent to the Junk World, where Ugatz await in a secret facility to turn them into more Ugatz.
    • Faceless Suto siblings. That's all.
  • Quirky Work: This series basically runs on "Japanese Humour", is chock-loaded with Rule of Funny in basically all of its episodes, everything hilariously makes no sense and it's a lot Lighter and Softer than the previous seasons before it. What do you get? A comically nonsensical Super Sentai series which might make little to no sense for fans overseas.
  • Retroactive Recognition: That guy in episode 6, the one who Sosuke thought Saki was in love with? Nine years later (fittingly enough), he gets to be a Ranger himself, specifically Kyuranger's Sixth Ranger (well, twelfth, but of the three additional Rangers to the initial nine, he's the actual Sixth Ranger in function)
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: Shippers in the fandom seem to like pairing Hiroto and Saki even though the two rarely talk to each other.
  • Tear Jerker
    • Hiramechimedes' parting speech to the Pollution Ministers is rather heartbreaking, even by Sentai villain standards:
Yogostein: Hiramechimedes! What are you doing -nari!?
Hiramechimedes: All I've done until now is to make complicated calculations in an attempt to defeat the Go-Ongers. But that was a mistake -desu.
      Yogostein: What!?
Hiramechimedes: Right now, I'm filling my body with enough Bikkurium for 100 Barbaric Machine Beasts.
Kegalesia: Bikkurium for 100 Barbaric Machine Beasts!?
Kitaneidas: So that's why the base is out of energy -zoyo.
Hiramechimedes: To hell with intellect! I'll crush them with raw power! THAT is the answer I've found -desu!
Yogostein: Don't do it! Bikkurium is a powerful drug -nari! If you use that much at once, your life...
Hiramechimedes: I, Hiramechimedes, even if it costs my life, will protect the honor of Lord Yogostein and the Land Pollution branch!!
      Yogostein: Hiramechimedes...
    • Admit it. You cried when Sōsuke was turned into a bronze statue at the end of GP 35.
    • GP 37. Kegalesia holds a wake for the recently deceased Yogostein, where even the Mooks are weeping. Yes, even the foot-soldiers, who we have seen many get beaten by their angry bosses, are literally showing grief. Apparently, Yogostein also was loved by those guys as well. Kitaneidas is also busy at work...to make "the greatest Banki" in honour of their dead ally. Kind of touching and sad at the same time, especially if you know they won't succeed.
      • The fact that his own father was only shown calling him useless without any kind of mourning doesn't help either.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Toripter, due to being voiced by a woman. #38 gave us the final answer to his gender.
  • The Woobie: The original three Gaiark Ministers may be villains, but they are far from evil because they ONLY wanted to make the Human World comfortable for the Barbaric Machines to live in. Even after death, having each other is what these three matters, though they got a bit better between the events of Gokaiger VS Gavan and 10 Years Grand Prix.
  • Woolseyism: In Chinese, due to how the Japanese term ganbaru/"do your best" is phrased in the language as 加油/jīa yóu/"add oil (to your fire)", GunBir-O's name is literally translated as "Add Fuel King".
