Mario and his friends are back on the adventure of their dreams. Still no Bowser though.

An Episodic Game sequel to Super Mario Bros. 2 (As you know, is Super Mario USA in Japan) released for the Satellaview add-on for the Super Nintendo in 1996.

After the events of the original adventure, Mario and his friends assume their adventure in Subcon was All Just a Dream and move on. However, Wart and his minions laid low in another dream and return to trouble the land once more. The King of Subcon calls Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad back to Subcon to face the 8-bits again. Mouser also stole the Mario statues, symbols of peace in the kingdom and hid them all around Subcon.

The game was released and broadcasted in four different episodes, each of them based on an individual world from the original game. The gameplay is largely the same as its predecessor with some tweaks and differences. Players don't choose their character before stages. The player always begins the game as Mario, and characters change randomly during timed events. Broadcast Audio is generated through the Satellaview's soundlink system, which plays arranged soundtracks. None of the original soundtrack from the original game is in this title.

During gameplay, characters both heroic and villains will deliver commentary and trigger different timed events, both positive and negative affect the player, like power-ups and enemy attacks from offscreen.

The game was never released outside of Japan, but elements of it (such as scoring points and hidden collectibles within levels) were incorporated into Super Mario Bros. 2 when it was remade as Super Mario Advance for the Game Boy Advance.

Every trope from the original game applies to this game, but unique examples go on this page.

This game contains examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion: This game adds more to the lore of original game by introducing us to new characters like the King Of Subcon and his Commander.
  • Adapted Out: Worlds 3, 6, and 7 from the original game don't make the cut.
  • All Just a Dream: Subverted. This game josses the original game's ending by implying that Subcon was actually real.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Princess Peach is still a sweetie, but has a nasty temper. Depending on the situation, this can either be helpful or dangerous.
  • Big Bad: One/Two for each episode.
    • Episode 1: The Birdo Trio and Mouser
    • Episode 2: Tryclyde
    • Episode 3: Fryguy
    • Episode 4: Clawgrip (and Wart)
  • Degraded Boss: Wart got smashed with this hard. Not only does he no longer has his castle anymore, but his lair was reduced to a single room where he can be fought anytime and multiple times in every episode through the player entering a pot in Subspace (Which was how players accessed the warp zone in the original).
  • Episodic Game: The game was released in four different parts, based on worlds in the original Game. Episode 1 covers World 1, Episode 2 covers World 2, but Episode 3 covers World 4 and Episode 4 covers World 5.
  • Friendly Fire: Occasionally Peach will get frustrated with the enemies and start throwing giant Vegetables from out of bounds. These vegetables can defeat enemies and bosses, but will also hurt the player.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: Prepare to be attacked by things offscreen. The most you can do is wait it out until the event stops.
  • Gameplay Randomization: Players begin the game as Mario and will switch between Luigi, Peach or Toad depending on the event and episode. If you aren't prepared, this can wreck your control. Thankfully, there is a timed cue before this happens. One particular event has the characters switching constantly until Peach interrupts it.
  • Giant Mook: Giant phantos appear occasionally to attack the player. Especially in Episode 2.
  • The Good King: Osama, the King of Subcon.
  • Gratuitous English: Some of the bosses do this. Clawgrip will tend to lapse into English whenever he speaks.
  • Mythology Gag: Clawgrip's lapses into English speaking is a gag referencing the fact that he was an American addition to the game that wasn't in the original original game.
  • No Fourth Wall: Both the heroes and bad guys can partake and interfere with the gameplay. Mario and friends usually give power-ups and ability boosts, while Wart and his goons will try to attack the player.
  • Original Generation: This game introduces the King of Subcon and his Commander, who were not in the original game.
  • Proactive Boss: The Main Boss of each episode will try to attack/inconvenience the player from offscreen during specific events. The Birdos fire eggs, Mouser will throw giant bombs that split into smaller bombs, Tryclyde and Fryguy spits giant fireballs, Clawgrip will throw rocks, and Wart will send up his bubbles.
  • Real After All: According to this game, Subcon (And thus the events of the Super Mario Bros. 2) was not just a dream and really does exist.
  • Scoring Points: Unlike the original game, this game has a score system.
  • Scripted Event: Events, both positive and negative play out at timed intervals.
  • Suddenly Voiced: Predating the Super Mario Advance remake that would come out years later, all of the characters are voiced and are able to talk. Unlike Advance however, this is only able to be heard through the satellite broadcast audio and not through the game itself. So players playing on an Emulator will just get pure silence.
  • Timed Mission: The game plays out in Real-Time, and the round ends after 40 minutes.
  • Verbal Tic: Birdo, Tryclyde, and Fryguy team have this when speaking.
    • The Birdos: Crossdressing Voices. All three of the Birdos are voiced by men.
    • Tryclyde: Stunted speech with all of the heads speaking as one.
    • Fryguy: Speaking in a dignified and formal tone, like that of a cultured samurai and reciting Haiku on occasion.
    • Clawgrip: Occasionally lapses into English when talking
