Trivia / NoPixel

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Happens occasionally, since many players play multiple characters. Often Lampshaded by characters commenting on different people played by the same person having a similar voice. Some players will try using different accents or voices to make this less obvious.
    • At one point, Windsong drives up to her house and encounters a local that is using Madison Pratt's character model. Both characters are played by Charlieblossom, who plays the scene completely straight.
      • Charlie will also do scenes where Windsong and Diane talk on the telephone, although usually one or the other is offscreen.
    • Parodied: any cops who interact with Bowser or Fenton may hear recordings of their own voices.
    • AbdulHD once did the voices of Kabir and a shopkeeper NPC.
    • In this clip, Ziggy introduces Ranger Perkins to Ken-Sama. Both Perkins and Ken-Sama are played by Pengwin, who was apparently logged into two instances of the game.
    • While training police cadets, Crocodile Steve encountered Dundee. Both characters are played by Whippy, who would log in with two different computers and lead cadets on high speed pursuits to train them, and then be extremely disappointed in them on Croc when the cadets would inevitably fail to get him, as Whippy is one of the better drivers on the server.
    • Mel Rickenbacker and James Randal, who are both played by Spaceboy, meet and kiss in this clip.note
Hubcap Jones: [watching them] This is my ultimate fanfic.
  • Actor Existence Limbo: Enforced to pay tribute to a player. When Blue622, who played popular character Boe Jangles, passed away in 2020, server management added some code that placed Boe's character model (smoking a joint) and car permanently in front of the character's house, so that the character isn't really "gone." (Even better, in NoPixel 3.0, if your character hugs Boe, he'll hug you back, and your stress meter gets reduced.)
  • The Cast Showoff:
    • Whenever Hubcap Jones plays a live concert, MikeTheBard improvises the songs in real time, playing all the parts and looping the instrumentals.
    • Outto-Tune Tyrone, Shane Davis, and Lil Cap are in-universe pop stars, and all their music is done by their respective players LAGTVMaximusBlack, Hudge_TV, and JayAitch5.
    • Andi Jones, Peggy Barnes, Ursula Leichenberg, and Tig Oconner are sometimes used to showcase Kiva's, Charlieblossom's, AuriEllis's, and NarlsBarkley's respective singing voices.
    • Gio Coppola, Lil Erf, Bryce Miller, and Mel Rickenbacker each tend to show off AppleShampoo's, Andy Milonakis', theLGX's, and Spaceboy's respective rap skills.
    • Non-singing example: Burn is capable of doing immaculate vocal impressions of Gordon Ramsay, Plankton, Sykkuno, DrDisrespect, Johnny Silverhand, Sasuke, and Vin Diesel, and has created characters around them.
  • Cast the Expert: SASP Trooper Andrews is played by Five0AnthO, who is a law enforcement officer in real life.
  • Channel Hop: Popular streamers Lord_Kebun (who plays Mr. K), Vader (who plays Eugene Zuckerberg), Mick (who plays Gladys Berry), DasMehdi (who plays Nino Chavez), and RatedEpicz (who plays Randy Bullet) all started off on Twitch, then later moved their streams to Facebook Gaming.
  • Colbert Bump: For both NoPixel itself and for individual streamers. Whenever a popular streamer like xQc, Sykkuno, Moonmoon, Kitboga, or Andy Milonakis plays on the server, the server and its storylines get a lot of attention, and other smaller streamers roleplaying with them get boosts to their view counts. However, this is a double-edged sword; clout chasing without good roleplay is heavily frowned upon (and one of the reasons Kitboga stopped playing on the server), and angry chat-hoppers from big streamers tend to cause behind-the-scenes issues and drama.
    • Even just being on the server itself can be a boon to small streamers, given its popularity. Crystalst was barely even in the server a month before seeing significant viewer boosts (and a Twitch partnership!) after her first interactions as Four Tee opposite server mainstays Spaceboy and Penta.
    • NoPixel owes its original popularity boom to a Colbert Bump from popular streamer Summit1g. Blue622, who played Boe Jangles, persuaded Summit to try GTA RP, and got him whitelisted on NoPixel 2.0. From there, the server's notoriety snowballed.
    • The song "Empty Bed" by Saint Punk was a direct beneficiary of a Colbert Bump from NoPixel streamers after it became popular for use during car chases.
  • Creator Breakdown: Andi Jones tearfully resigned as mayor a few weeks ahead of the end of her second term, as the arc and job had become too mentally taxing and too unfun for her player Kiva.
  • Creator's Pest:
    • Penta resists playing Ricky Robins, despite the character being a fan-favorite who started the Rickyism cult and caused citywide chaos for the Leanbois. This is not subsided since the launch of 3.0 despite Penta stating that he felt Ricky became far less interesting after gaining limbs.
    • Moonmoon infamously avoids playing Yung Dab, another fan-favorite character, partially because his fans keep hounding him for Dab content and he's largely uninterested. When Dab did eventually return in 3.0 his arc fizzled out extremely fast and Moonmoon left the server barring a token appearance from time to time, until 4.0 whereupon his lengthy arc running for mayor had significant impact on the rest of the server.
    • Charlieblossom eventually found Damzel N. D'Stress so annoying and one-note that she killed her off during a permathon. She also did the same to Tor Mented, as the character was an unlikable and irredeemable Suspiciously Similar Substitute for her more popular dead character Dee Mented.
    • Lauren Forcer was this for Kiwo. Kiwo didn't necessarily hate the character, but she very publicly disagreed with how the character was treated by other cops in 3.0, to the point that she admitted on Reddit that it had begun to affect her mental health. To that end, she only occasionally logged in off-stream to begrudgingly play Lauren just so the character wouldn't get fired or demoted; when this happened anyway, she quit NoPixel. She later returned for an FIB arc with Bench Guy, but ultimately quit again.
    • Similarly, KylieBitkin's issues with how Sgt. Angel was treated, as well as Kylie's issues with high command policy decisions that affected her RP as Angel, led her to publicly admit she was uninterested in playing as Angel anymore. She subsequently shelved the character for a time, and now almost exclusively plays as her other character Mary Mushkin.
    • Zig-zagged with Kelly Smith. In 2.0, Rlly had trouble getting other people interested in joining Kelly's Bike Gang, and almost quit the server over it. She later revamped Kelly with a steroid abuse storyline and had him align with Prune Gang. That said, as of 3.0 Rlly has mostly shelved Kelly in favor of her Burger Shot character Shelly, who went on to be a successful character.
    • Almost played straight with Kiva's character Andi Jones. Kiva came to hate Andi's mayorship role, and dreaded logging into the server — her only reprieve was whenever Mike Block kidnapped Andi — and she ended up having Andi resign early rather than complete the last few weeks of her second term.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices:
    • Gladys Berry, Kiki Chanel, Edna Moose, Mary Livingston, Candy Sprinkles, Charisma Star, Veronika del Monika, Molly Minaj, Jane Obama, and Jane Farmer are all played by men.
    • Kelly Smith, Lorenzo Lezar, and Vincent Vincent are played by women.
    • Zig-zagged and eventually subverted with Bingle Dan, who is played by a woman, uses a male ped model, and was non-binary for a time before eventually identifying as female.
  • The Danza:
    • Hedi Saurus is played by HediSaurus.
    • Officer Kyle Pred is played by Kyle.
    • Abdul AlRahim is played by AbdulHD.
    • Judd is played by Judd.
    • Austin Creed is played by Austin Creed.
    • Ash Ketchup is played by Ash.
    • Ramee El-Rahman is played by Ramee.
    • Tony Corleone and Anthony Copleone are played by AnthonyZ.
    • Al Saab is played by Ssaab. And Ssaab's other character, Baas, is a literal inversion.
    • Sgt. Ziggy Buggs is played by Ziggy.
  • Dear Negative Reader: Koil, the server owner, frequently spends time on his stream reading and mocking negative viewer comments from the r/RPClipsGTA subreddit.
  • Defictionalization:
    • You can listen to Outto-Tune Tyrone, Yung Fierro, Molly Minaj, Liz Anya, Orpheus Dawson, and Big Toe (among others) on Spotify.
    • The Bobby Beats Experience is an in-universe podcast that can be listened to as a podcast in Real Life via Spotify's podcast service Anchor, serving as a Spin-Off of sorts.
    • The in-universe Spotify pastiche, Pixify, used to be available in real life.
  • Descended Creator: Koil, the server owner, frequently plays as Trooper Kael Soze, Francis J. Francer, Otto Delmar, or Ray Ray. Most of the other server devs also play as various characters.
  • Enforced Method Acting: Since the players are experiencing story twists in real-time, their own emotional reactions usually translate directly to their characters.
    • Kiwo and HediSaurus both had a real-life emotional reaction to Dias' last letter to Lauren.
    • Speaking of, both KylieBitkin and Kiwo sobbed during their respective characters' eulogies at Dias' funeral, both later admitting out-of-character how sad they were; Kiwo even had to cut Lauren's eulogy short because the emotions got to be too heavy. The scene carried tremendous emotional weight as a result.
  • Executive Meddling:
    • Penta got hit with this with two characters:
      • In 2.0, Jordan Steele was removed from the LSPD by the server admins and not in-game. Penta was ordered to end Jordan's police arcs in a three-day span, and not in the couple of months like he'd originally planned for the character. In 3.0, Penta got a multi-day ban after Jordan said some rude things in-character.
      • In December 2021, server management forbade Penta from continuing to play as Chase Clouter, a popular character who he used to satirize out-of-character issues bleeding into RP.
    • A few days after removing Jordan from the police force, server admins unexpectedly ordered Winchester's player Ray308win to end his FIB arcs and join the regular police force.
    • To mitigate any potential issues with Twitch's terms of service, the server admins had the Vanilla Unicorn evacuated and shut down after Twitch issued a temporary ban to a streamer for hanging out with the (fully clothed, but scantily clad) dancers there. It later reopened with a hot tub, so they could coyly match Twitch's "Pools, Hot Tubs, & Beaches" category.
  • God Never Said That: In the weeks and days leading up to the release of 3.0, a rumor began to swirl that characters that had been "perma'd" (permanently killed off) in 2.0 could come back in 3.0. However, no such claim was ever publicly made by server staff. This was confirmed in a Discord voice meeting with roleplayers just before 3.0, where Koil said that perma'd characters would remain dead for the time being.
  • He Also Did:
    • James, also known as UberHaxorNova, who plays Siz Fulker and Barry Briddle, was originally known for his Let's Play videos on YouTube.
    • OTT is played by MaximusBlack, one half of the LAGTV duo, known for their StarCraft II videos, particularly the "When Cheese Fails" series.
  • Hostility on the Set:
    • After RatedEpicz was banned in April 2023 following accusations of abusive behavior, KylieBitkin expressed her relief on stream, saying that she felt he'd held a grudge and been toxic to all of her characters following an incident between Angel and Randy. She also stated that her OOC reports about Rated were ignored by a member of management who was later banned.
    • Penta said he was leaving NoPixel for good in April 2023 after Koil made several OOC comments about Penta that "crossed a line," following years of NoPixel management having disputes with Penta. This led to a brief war of words on stream between Penta and Koil.
    • A personal dispute flared up between Koil and NoPixel's paid lead developer DW, leading to DW's quiet firing as lead developer in December 2022, and full ban after he unknowingly tried to log in to do work. This led to DW filing a lawsuit against Koil and NoPixel. DW eventually released his own server called ONX that drew several former NoPixel streamers and became a NoPixel competitor.
  • I Am Not Spock: It's not uncommon for streamers to remind their viewers that they aren't their characters, and that in-game conflicts or relationships don't translate into real life.
  • In Memoriam: Whenever a player passes away, the whole server collectively mourns. This led to the creation of the Memorial Wall, which memorializes NoPixel players and their characters, and serves as a place where players can go to pay respects to their friends. As of 2023 there are five names: David "itsStarkey" Chris, Boe "Blue622" Jangles, Mikey "CallMeGrub" Dias, Misty "DovahPug" Mocha, and Luna "MikiFantasia" Torres.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: In mid-2020, after a bunch of Twitch channels got hit with DMCA strikes for copyrighted music in past clips, most NoPixel streamers deleted their entire back-catalog of clips. Several streamers downloaded their clips beforehand, and a few have their best moments saved on YouTube or other video sites, but unless you downloaded clips prior to the wipe, it's safe to assume that the majority are gone forever.
  • The Other Darrin: Invoked; Fuslie turned her character April Fooze over to RatedEpicz (who normally plays Randy Bullet) for a few days while she was off at TwitchCon in Amsterdam.
  • Production Posse: Cops, EMS, and gangs are each typically composed of folks who prefer to work together, not just out of necessity, but because they've become close friends in real life. Other groups - regardless of whether their characters are friends and/or enemies - have also formed around real life friendships and comfortable roleplay.
  • Promoted Fanboy: It's not uncommon for newer players on NoPixel to gush about how they'd started out watching NoPixel streams before submitting an application to join.
  • Real-Life Relative: Most (if not all) of Charlieblossom's and SilentSentry's characters hang out and interact. Charlie and Sentry are married in real life.
  • Romance on the Set: Sheriff Tribble and Hedi are dating in-game; their players are also dating in real life.
    • Same for corporals Claire Everly and Mina Price who are married in-game while dating in real life.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Carl Crimes — the one character whose main shtick is his obsession with destroying "walkers" — missed out on both the Halloween and Christmas Zombie Apocalypses in 2020.
    • At one point before getting kicked off of Twitch, DrDisrespect expressed interest in joining NoPixel. However, the server automatically bans any players with Twitch bans, since Twitch's TOS dictates that banned streamers are forbidden from appearing in other people's Twitch streams, so he'll be unable to join unless he gets his Twitch ban rescinded.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things:
    • It's important to bear in mind that even though they play enemies in-game, many streamers are friends in real life. That doesn't stop fans of one streamer from chat hopping and harassing other streamers when their favorite characters don't win a confrontation, causing players to avoid each other.
      • The Chang Gang is super popular with fans and players alike, but unfortunately a portion of CG fans used to have a habit of spamming, harassing, and threatening other players whose characters go up against the gang. This caused other roleplayers to avoid them for a bit.
      • This also happened in late 2020, with fans of the East Side Ballas gang jumping streams and harassing other streamers. However, unlike with Chang Gang, the overall toxicity led to a lot of bad blood and drama, and it ended with the ESB disbanded and most of the characters Put on a Bus.
      • A sizable contingent of xQc's fans tend to harass other players - particularly those who play cop characters who shoot or arrest X - either in chat or on social media. This has led to some division in the fan community, and has discouraged players from letting their characters interact with X.
      • JayAitch5 stopped making music as his character Lil Cap, citing death threats from chat hoppers.
    • On the other side of it, romance RP leads to some ridiculous viewer drama that includes player harassment, leading to players keeping their characters out of romantic relationships. xQc specifically stated that he avoids relationship RP because he thinks viewers tend to live vicariously through characters and players, and as a result viewers tend to take fictional situations far too seriously.
    • Kitboga has cited clout chasing from fans as the reason he stopped playing on the server. Specifically, he felt that as time went on, more and more players were acting like they knew his character simply because they had seen his streams, and that competition had taken priority over roleplay.
    • The r/RPClipsGTA subreddit, originally created for clips and discussion of GTA RP before morphing into the de facto NoPixel subreddit, has become a source of controversy in NoPixel circles due to accusations that its users tend to bait drama and toxicity. Because of this, a lot less NoPixel roleplayers tend to visit it, and many openly deride it on stream or in social media.
    • Moonmoon outright refuses fans' requests for NoPixel content, famously staying off of 2.0 after leaving, and resisting playing popular character Yung Dab upon returning for 3.0. It took months before he brought Dab back in 3.0, and even that didn't last before he left again.
    • Chat metagaming — that is, Twitch chatters providing information that the player's character wouldn't know naturally, thus spoiling the scenario — instantly forces a player to alter or avoid the scenario, as server rules don't allow any kind of metagaming (and most players enjoy learning things in real time anyway, because it makes the RP more natural). Five0AnthO, playing as Trooper Andrews, almost quit the game during the Rainbow Road Heist after his chat spoiled the criminals' plans.
  • Write Who You Know: According to the wiki, Irwin Dundee was based on a drugged-out Aussie that Whippy met one evening.
