Go To

Release: June 3, 2014

Film: Blues Brothers 2000

Tagline: We’re on a mission from garbage.

This review contains examples of:

  • Aspect Ratio Switch: At the beginning of the episode, certain shots are done in low quality 4:3, until the Critic pushes the letterbox away before he begins looking into Blues Brothers 2000.
  • Arson, Murder, and Admiration: According to Critic, the movie is garbage from top to bottom... apart from the soundtrack, which is actually pretty decent.
  • Brick Joke: After Throwing Out the Script of the "Fuckital" commercial to keep on ranting, the very last thing The Critic says (with Subverted Catchphrase) is that he needs to go take some Fuckital.
  • Call-Back: Animated Kitten Critic (otherwise known as Nostalgia Kitten) makes a brief cameo.
  • Didn't We Use This Joke Already?: While ranting about the "Ghost Riders in the Sky" scene, the Critic abruptly performs a song about Ghost Pony Rider from the Ghost Rider review, only to get interrupted by Malcom, who asks, "Didn't you do this joke before?"
  • Disappointed in You: Critic's ultimate emotion about the film.
Critic: Movie, I'm not mad... yes, I am, I'm furious. But there's something that I'm even more: disappointed. I'm disappointed in you, Movie.
  • First-World Problems: The Critic not caring about Tamara's overdosing on "Fuckital" in the background when he throws out the Parody Commercial script to continue to attack the movie.
  • Gilligan Cut: After the Critic uses Cards Against Humanity to choose three things that are too crazy to appear on a Blues Brothers movie (An immortal Voodoo priestess, Rednecks turned into rats and zombies), he asks: "They did it, didn't they?"
  • Idiot Plot:invoked Savagely lambasted by the Critic, by comparing the reason why the first movie involved Putting the Band Back Together (the orphanage had to be saved, and thus was a Mission from God) with the second one's (Elwood apparently decided to just do it, citing that "The Lord works in mysterious ways") and pointing out that everybody in the Blues Brothers Band (save Elwood and Jake) earned a happy ending after serving their time (good high-paying jobs, salvaging their relationships, etc) and had no reason to follow Elwood again, as well as apparently having kidnapped the kid.
  • It's Been Done: Robin Williams had previously done a stand-up bit about a drug named "Fukital" with similar attributes (but focused on the total relaxation and not on the Brain Bleach effect).
  • Jumping the Shark:invoked The first scene where Buster is shown in a Blues Brothers costume with Elwood and Mack is seen as this by the Critic. While it's far from the most infuriating moment for him, Critic says that any chance the film had of being entertaining or taken seriously was lost the moment they decided to do it.
Critic: This is like giving Wolverine a puppy, or Jules Winfield a martian, or the Terminator —
(the review abruptly cuts to footage of the Terminator wearing star-shaped glasses in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines)
    Critic: Oh, yeah, that happened.
  • Manipulative Editing: Despite the film apparently being so boring compared to the first movie, Critic doesn't mention the big car crash in this film.
  • Notice This: The Critic tells the audience to memorize the only two scenes Buster had done anything meaningful in the movie (stealing Cab's wallet to get the money for a new car, and giving a Rousing Speech when the band is about to break up), as he refers back to them at the end of the movie, when Buster starts worrying about being taken away from the Blues Brothers forever.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: After witnessing the extent of the film's Genre Shift into fantasy, Doug angrily throws off the Critic's costume to rant about how much of an affront it is to the original. It may very well be the biggest display of genuine anger that Doug/The Critic has ever shown towards something he's reviewed.
  • Parody Commercial: "Fuckital", a drug which causes the viewer not to nerd-rage about movies. Made of 90% Morphine.
  • Product Placement: While looking up the Cards Against Humanity website, the Critic tells the audience, "I'm sure you've all played this game before. Cards Against Humanity — they have an online version. If you haven't, you should. It's fun. Bring the kids."
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Critic abandons the script of his Fuckital commercial to go outside, show the audience statues of Elwood and the Bluesmobile and then give one of these to Dan Aykroyd, calling him an Ungrateful Bastard for turning in a terrible sequel to a movie they immortalized him for as a Chicago icon.
  • Retraux: Parts of the beginning of the review simulate a 4:3 480p quality, as part of the Critic's intentionally lame Production Throwback to his review of Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue.
  • Running Gag:
    • A clip of John Belushi saying "Bullshit."
    • "You got no plot, you got no comedy, and you don't even have the other Blues Brother. Unless you [have something promising that's better than this], count me the fuck out of this."
  • Rule of Symbolism: Critic pretending to recreate his review of Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue without any clips from the cartoon itself, filling the void with a bunch of other critics, note  not offering anything new other than that and being something nobody actually wanted to see is a massive Take That! towards this movie, saying it operates on similar principles.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Subverted Catchphrase: "I'm the Nostalgia Critic, and hopefully in a few minutes, I won't remember who I am."
  • The Three Certainties in Life: Before going to a commercial break, the Critic says "Here's the only thing certain after death, taxes, and everything you love either getting a shitty sequel or a shitty remake: commercials!"
  • Throwing Out the Script: In-universe: During the "Fuckital" commercial, Doug appears to be playing the spokesman for the drug, saying his scripted lines, but soon realizes he can't keep up the skit anymore, so he removes his costume, and puts the Nostalgia Critic hat and jacket back on in order to rant about Blues Brothers 2000 some more.
  • Tranquil Fury: The Critic's final rant, where he tells the movie that he's disappointed with it, and may God rape it with a pick-up truck. Slowly. With vengeance.
  • Video Game Movies Suck:invoked The Critic is convinced that the movie is actually the adaptation of the SNES video game, which would explain all the weirdness happening therein.

Bullshit!
