BassWard

Original air date: November 23, 2023

Squidward and Bubble Bass are forced to tolerate each other on a road trip to Jetsam City for a clarinet convention and a comic book convention.

"BassWard" contains examples of:

  • Breaking Old Trends: This is the first episode in the series where SpongeBob doesn't appear in any way, shape or form.
  • Brick Joke: After Squidward and Bubble Bass cause a mother and her baby to be blown off the train, the two are seen using a handcar, with the mother promising to "ground" the two once they find them. At the end of the episode when Squidward and Bubble Bass are using a handcar to get home, the mother and her baby show up and start chasing them.
  • Continuity Nod: A poster of the IJLSA can be seen outside the comic convention.
  • Day in the Limelight: For Bubble Bass and Squidward.
  • Downer Ending: Squidward doesn’t get to attend his convention thanks to all the antics caused by Bubble Bass, though at least Bubble Bass doesn’t get to attend his either.
  • Enemy Mine: Squidward and Bubble Bass are forced to travel together and eventually survive their trip to Jetsam City together as well.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Bubble Bass is genuinely horrified when the baby flies out of the train, though unlike Squidward he tries to pretend it didn’t happen. When the baby’s mother also gets thrown out of the train, Bubble Bass is just as horrified.
  • Everyone Has Standards: On that beat, Squidward is repulsed by the ugly baby but is still horrified when it flies out of the train.
  • Fat and Skinny: Bubble Bass and Squidward have this respective dynamic.
  • Fat Slob: Bubble Bass has atrocious table manners as usual and also makes a mess out of the bathroom, making an impromptu shag carpet out of his body hair that falls off him without even trying to clean up after himself.
  • Handcar Pursuit: The episode ends with Squidward and Bubble Bass using a handcar to get back home. They are then chased by the mother and her baby in their handcar.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Both Squidward and Bubble Bass start bawling when they miss the check in time at their hotel.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: Bubble Bass spends most of the episode getting away with his antics while Squidward draws the short straw, but in the end his comic convention is destroyed just the same as Squidward's.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Squidward and Bubble Bass cause a baby to be blown out the train window, followed by his mother. The two then get their tickets blown away and are kicked out of the train. They are also refused on the train going back due to not having their tickets and end up being chased by the enraged mother and baby.
  • An Odd Place to Sleep: When Squidward and Bubble Bass have to share a hotel room, Squidward decides to sleep in the bathroom when Bubble Bass gets potato chip crumbs in the bed.
  • Out of Focus: This is the first ever episode of the main series where SpongeBob is entirely absent.
  • Pie-Eyed: Bubble Bass's eyes briefly have pie slices in them when he points to Old Man Jenkins' plane.
  • Planes, Trains, and Imbeciles: Squidward's train ride goes badly when every seat is taken and he's forced to sit next to Bubble Bass. The latter orders fondue, and the attendant serves it right over Squidward's head, which spills when the train goes forward.
  • Portmantitle: The episode's title is a portmanteau of Bubble Bass's last name and Squidward's first name.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": Bubble Bass and Squidward both let out multiple no's as Old Man Jenkins flies dangerously close to their conventions.
  • Road Trip Plot: The episode centers on Bubble Bass and Squidward being forced to travel together for their comic book convention and clarinet convention.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Neither Bubble Bass nor Squidward are able to attend their conventions as both buildings end up being destroyed by Old Man Jenkins' plane.
  • Spontaneous Human Combustion: Old Man Jenkins manages to avoid hitting the conventions with his plane and makes a safe landing... and then he suddenly explodes as he's about to walk away, destroying Bubble Bass's convention in the process.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • When the hotel manager offers Squidward and Bubble Bass another room that is not as nice as their previous rooms, Squidward wonders how bad it could be. The room itself turns out to be quite nice, but having to share with Bubble Bass makes it bad.
    • When Bubble Bass's convention is destroyed, Squidward taunts him only for his clarinet convention to be destroyed moments later.
  • Trash of the Titans: When Squidward and Bubble Bass have to share a hotel room, Squidward decides to sleep in the bathroom since Bubble Bass is getting potato chip crumbs in the bed. Squidward is hardly surprised that Bubble Bass trashed the bathroom, though he does mistake Bubble Bass' body hair for a shag carpet.
  • Villainous Glutton: Bubble Bass's big appetite causes several problems for Squidward, who even angrily lampshades that he keeps eating the whole episode.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The end of the episode implies that Squidward and Bubble Bass may be on the way to this, as they tell each other they hate each other in a friendly way, before going back to openly declaring their hate in a conventional way, before they resume trying to escape the lady together.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Squidward and Bubble Bass are hiking through the desert when Squidward notices Old Man Jenkins' farm, which leads them to sing the appropriate nursery rhyme:
Squidward: Look! Old Man Jenkins has a farm!
Bubble Bass: And on that farm, he has a ride?
    Squidward and Bubble Bass: E-I-E-I-O!
  • Worst. Whatever. Ever!: After seeing both their conventions get destroyed, Bubble Bass and Squidward declare their trip together the "worst. Trip. Ever," with Bubble Bass saying the first two words and Squidward finishing it by saying the last word.
  • You Are Fat: Bubble Bass is so fat he initially takes up both seats until he reluctantly gives up one for Squidward.
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: When Squidward and Bubble Bass are forced to walk to the city, Bubble Bass complains about the lack of snacks.
Bubble Bass: You won't like me when I'm hungry.
Squidward: I don't like you now!
