When his attempt to ask Rose to the school dance doesn't pan out thanks to Rose already having agreed to go with Brad, Jake searches for an extremely attractive date of his own to impress Rose. He ends up finding a girl, named Jasmine, and she agrees to go with him. But little does Jake know, Jasmine is not what she seems...

Tropes

  • Analogy Backfire: As a way to comfort Jake about how his bad breath (by way of dragon adolescence) has chased away all prospects for a date, Lao Shi tells him "A horn does not make the unicorn." As Jake so puts it, the horn does make a unicorn what it is, or it's just a horse. Frustrated, Lao Shi brushes it off and gets to the point of how there are more important things than getting a date for a dance.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: While she was friendly and liked him well enough before, this episode marks the point where Rose seriously starts to reciprocate Jake's affection, thanks to Jake comforting her after Brad dumped her and asking her for a dance.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Played with. Jasmine is secretly a Nyx, which is, according to Grandpa, "a creature who is harmless and beautiful during the day, but becomes a soul-sucking monster when the moon reaches the center of the night sky." Still, as opposed to only pretending to be friendly while she's human, Jasmine is genuinely nice and can't help but steal souls when she becomes a Nyx.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Jake, after drinking the potion he was supposed to pour onto the Nyx.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Jake defeats Jasmine’s Nyx form using his bad breath.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Jake admits that the whole mess at the dance wouldn't have happened if he'd taken Jasmine home when she'd told him to, and Jasmine admits that she's just as much at fault and should've told him the whole truth from the beginning.
  • Establishing Character Moment: The Oracle Twins are introduced seeing Jake's future on either side, which is the complete opposite of their personalities.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Jake may have brought Jasmine to the dance to make up for the fact that Rose was going to the dance with Brad, but Jake never intended for it to lead to Brad dumping poor Rose for Jasmine. What's more, instead of selfishly seeing this as an opportunity to move in on Rose, he's empathetic about how hurt she must've felt to be dumped during the dance.
  • Face–Monster Turn: Jasmine continually tries to warn Jake that she needs to leave the dance before the moon gets too high, but he's too distracted by the attention he's getting from bringing her to notice. She even attempts to just flat-out run out of the building before she's stopped by Brad long enough for her instincts to take over.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Brad dumps Rose at the dance for Jasmine because "he wanted to go to the dance with the prettiest girl". Not long after dancing, Jasmine's Nyx instincts kick in and she makes him her first victim, stealing his soul.
  • Lower Half Reveal: Jake brings a girl to his school dance so he could impress his crush. One of the girls that Fu Dog introduces is Veronica, seemingly looked normal behind a food cart until it was removed to reveal her Eight hairy spider legs. Jake immediately retreated.
  • Never Say "Die": A notable aversion. Sara apparently has a vision of Jake's future death and cheerily asks him if he wants to know when he'll die.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Twice over, Jake's actions are at the root of his problems. (A) If he had listened to Jasmine and escorted her home instead of getting swept up in the attention, she wouldn't have turned into a Nyx at the dance, and (B) if he had stuck with Fu Dog during his search for a date, he wouldn't have even brought a Nyx to the dance in the first place.
    • Then again, Fu Dog wasn't exactly the best matchmaker either. As he tried to set up Jake with Veronica, who has litral spider legs, and the Oracle Twins, who spout out awkward predictions. So it's understandable why Jake decided to choose a date himself.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Played with. Brad isn't a villain and Jasmine can't help her Nyx instincts when they arise, but if it weren't for the combined efforts of Jasmine unintentionally stealing Brad's attention and Brad dumping Rose, it wouldn't have lead to Jake comforting Rose and earning her affection.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: Jasmine isn't evil in her human form, but she's compelled to devour souls whenever she's in Nyx-mode.
  • Not Quite Back to Normal: The episode ends with Trixie and Spud's souls not having been restored properly after Jasmine's defeat, as they've switched bodies.
  • Parental Obliviousness: A little girl who attempts to point out Fu Dog talking to her mother is quietly hushed without the mother bothering to turn around.
  • Power Nullifier: The potion that Fu gave Jake renders whoever comes in contact with it powerless. It was intended to be poured on the Nyx instead of Jake drinking it.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Played with. Jasmine's eyes turn red when her Nyx nature is kicking in, but she isn't malicious or evil. Unfortunately, the fact that she's a Nyx means she's driven to suck out people's souls, whether she wants to or not.
  • Tempting Fate: The episode ends with Jake grateful that everyone whose soul Jasmine stole was returned to their respective bodies. One gilligan cut later, we see Trixie and Spud have switched bodies.
  • Voices Are Mental: Same scene as the Tempting Fate and Not Quite Back to Normal examples above. To demonstrate that the souls have not all returned to their correct bodies, the viewer sees that Spud's body speaks with Trixie's voice and Trixie speaks with Spud's voice.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: A relatively small one. Trixie calls out Jake on being so swept up by the attention that he's oblivious to how Brad dumped Rose.
  • When the Clock Strikes Twelve: Nixes transform into their true form and unleash their soul-sucking powers when the moon reaches the center of the night sky.
  • Wingding Eyes: The eyes of the Nyx's victims turn into red spirals.
  • You Need a Breath Mint: Jake's bad breath, which according to Grandpa, is a sign of dragon adolescence as all dragons get them. Fu Dog has Jake wear a special amulet to prevent the odor from seeking out.
