Rape Leads To Insanity / Anime & Manga

• Adekan: Shiro and Anri by way of So Beautiful, It's a Curse. Several people try to sell their services in prostitution and both were made sex slaves in their youth. Not to mention the innaproriate touching by people who find them attractive be they woman or man. Both have knowledge of how to seduce people or using their beauty to get what they want. It's implied a past of sexual assault and other hardships led to Anri becoming a psycho and Shiro to be as closed off emotionally and merciless when fighting as he is. Also a side male character went through numerous Break the Cutie hardships one which included Anri going through the motions of attempting to rape him. All of this splinters him mentally.
• Angel Sanctuary: Sevotharte, a.k.a. Lailah was raped by jealous co-workers, which led to... several bits of nastiness.
• Basilisk: Kagerou was never very stable to begin with, and getting raped and brutally tortured by Tenzen drove her off the deep end completely.
• Berserk:
  • Casca went mute and regressed to a childlike state after a horrifying rape at the hands of her former commander turned demon god Femto during the Eclipse. It's also implied that she's becoming an insomniac as a result. And she slaughters some men after the Eclipse who attempted to rape her. It's implied that the demons who stripped her naked during the Eclipse went further than that, as we see one sticking tentacles in her mouth as it's stripping and groping her with the others. One also tries to rape her with a spike on its head and succeeds at penetrating her with the tip, though a Censor Shadow makes the penetration less noticeably obvious. Luckily, it stops to watch Femto being born before going any deeper. During these moments, we see her sanity get destroyed and she retreats into herself. During later chapters, when two characters get a first-hand look at the horrors Casca endured during the Eclipse, they are scared out of their wits, with Casca commenting that the violations that befelled her were “viscerally disgusting”. The insanity is also justified by the brand of sacrifice on her neck, which is very painful in the presence of Apostles and the rape put her as close to a member of the Godhand as one could get. So it was a combination of the trauma, rape, and excruciating pain.
  • Guts is a more mundane/less supernatural example. He Used to Be a Sweet Kid, but now he's a Byronic Hero with some serious issues that also Hates Being Touched. He became this way after he was raped as a kid — exacerbated by the fact that it came about due to betrayal by his adopted father — and it just got worse with the Eclipse where he was Forced to Watch the above-mentioned rape in circumstances that all but mirrored his own traumatic childhood ordeal. He then develops an even more horrific version of PTSD and an insanely violent split personality that tries to goad him into raping and dismembering Casca. Let's just say that he has all the reason in the world to want Griffith dead.
  • Princess Charlotte lost it when her own father tried to rape her because she was starting to resemble her mother and Griffith sought her out for sex which infuriated her father. This alienated her from him, and when his health suffered due to the horror and guilt over what he had almost done, she refused to see him on his deathbed, and we see her crying Broken Tears over the whole ordeal, begging for Griffith to come help her.
  • It's weird that the Torture Technician never mentioned it in his graphic description of what he did to him over a year, but Griffith was probably castrated during his torture. It was probably the first thing to go, in fact, since his crime was having sex with Charlotte, so it would make sense that the instrument used to commit the crime would be the first thing to be destroyed. He probably didn't get there because Guts rammed his sword through him, and the door. However, by the completely depraved tone the guy spoke as he talked about Griffith and his beauty and how Griffith was made of fine material for the man to do his stuff on... He might have also done... other things to Griffith. If the man's job was to make Griffith suffer as much as possible, sexual abuse has to be taken into account as well as physical. The implied rape as well as the other aspects of his Despair Event Horizon led to him to try to commit suicide and become irreversibly evil. Even before that, Griffith prostituted himself to an old man (Gennon) to fund his army and he's clearly hurting something fierce afterwards, showing that it wasn't wanted on his end and he gouges his fingernails into his arms till they bleed. Further shown when he has sex with Princess Charlotte as his eyes have an emotionless coldness Kubrick Stare to them as if he is in a bad state mentally from all he has done to try to achieve his goal of gaining a kingdom and is trying to repair his pride. Almost like after his night with Gennon and other horrors his mind goes to a bad place during sex. And when he rapes Casca, it’s clear he’s going for Rape by Proxy because of the possible sexual torture that came with the general torture when he was held captive for a year along with other sustained trauma and in order to make Guts and Casca suffer more (he may be trying to mirror Guts own rape for maximum Break the Cutie purposes) and out of a bad case of unrequited love as it’s implied he had feelings for both Guts and Casca and they had became a couple. Indeed after that when he is reborn he’s constantly sporting a Stoic Kubrick Stare and since he became a god hand he has all the internalized insanity and sadism that comes with it.
  • A latter mass torture scene shows such things as a woman having a massive spiky implement rammed up her genital area and when a older woman sees this as well as the other forms of torture she lets out a shriek of insanity and Tears of Fear before she is also put to torture.
  • Farnese is almost made to be raped by a possessed horse and all of this coupled with non con touching by some demons sends the poor girl into madness briefly. Guts has a nasty bout of PTSD and flashbacks to Casca’s rape when the horse is trying to rape Farnese and he decapitates the horse in a fit of rage.
• Bitter Virgin: Hinako was traumatised by years of sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather. This severely messed with her mental state and caused her to develop an aversion to men and Hates Being Touched except by Daisuke. She gets better through her relationship with Daisuke.
• Black Butler II:
  • The most notable happens in the second season, considering Alois' whole life is a bit of Fridge Horror. After his little brother and entire village are killed, this already slightly off boy (who laughed cheerfully as he robbed the dead) begins living as a true city street rat. Knowing how things like that work out, and especially after seeing his reactions to things later on, it's quite obvious that this young boy solicited himself for food or shelter before he even hit a double digit age. Think about this: Jim is only around 11 when he goes to Earl Trancy's manor. There, he living with a bunch of boys in the same condition, being bathed and treated like cattle, all while being a sex slave to an old man. At the age of 11. It's quite obvious even then he is not a virgin, as he dolls up and puts on a beautiful red robe, seducing the old man expertly until the guy's kissing his feet. He even becomes the favorite boy, taking place for the man's son who vanished as a baby - the real Alois Trancy which allows him to take the name Alois after Claude kills the Earl. Episode 8 shows that Alois was raped by the former Lord Trancy. It's implied that this helped make him so Ax-Crazy — he's shown to have been a little off-kilter even before the event, having joked about his entire village dying and happily looted their corpses when they actually did, but his violent tendencies seem to date from it, not to mention his compulsive promiscuity.
  • Ciel is implied to have been raped in addition to other tortures he endured when being held captive by a fanatical cult. Poor Ciel who Used to Be a Sweet Kid becomes a Byronic Hero who's greatest wish in life is to get revenge on those who caused him and his family to suffer such humiliation. In chapter 71, when Maurice rips apart Ciel's shirt with scissors, it seems indicated that this reminded Ciel of his traumatic history, as he freaks out something fierce when Maurice does this indicating fear of possible rape at the hands of Maurice and his goons. Some flashbacks Ciel had during the Ship Arc reveal that before being sacrificed, Ciel had his shirt ripped apart with a knife, cut the same way Maurice tore the shirt, indicating possible rape at the hands of the cult. This is not helped how in the opening song of season 3 we see an image of Ciel being manhandled to the ground in the past by the cultists. This is confirmed in a later chapter. Only he has a twin brother who was also gang raped with him as well.
• Black Lagoon:
  • Rape and torture is implied to have been what made Hansel and Gretel so Ax-Crazy. Hansel and Gretel were so crazy because raping, torturing, and killing were the only ways to avoid being raped, tortured, and killed. In a horrifying (but textbook) example of operant conditioning, the constant negative reinforcement led directly to their psychotic behavior. The truly horrifying thing is that this is the natural human response.
  • Revy being raped by a corrupt police officer and having an uncaring abusive dad turned her from an optimistic, religious child to a spiteful, mood swinging, gun-crazy, God-hating, gun-for-hire with an occasional tendency to go on psychotic rampages if not for Rock.
• Bleach: When Aizen has Orihime kidnapped, Orihime is subjected to psychological conditioning, mental torture, implied rape threats, physical abuse, and being forced to watch Ichigo have a hole ripped through his chest, Uryuu having his arm diced off, and the enemy being completely untouched. All of this culminates in her having a breakdown. The sexual part of Orihime's Break the Cutie is more blatant in the manga, where Nnoitora not only forces her to watch as Tesla beats Ichigo bloody, but restrains her and puts his fingers up her mouth (like it was done to the above mentioned Juuzou), which is actually a kink often used in hentai and live-action Japanese porn; for all effects, Nnoitora was molesting Orihime in front of Ichigo, and it had to be bowdlerized in the anime by simply putting his hand over her mouth.
• Bokurano: Chizu has been in a relationship with her teacher Hatagai for a while. While it started off... consensual by Teacher/Student Romance standards, at least, Hatagai betrays her after a while (either posting explicit pictures of her online or straight-up having his friends gang-rape her, depending on the timeline). That doesn't quite drive her off the deep end—the last straw is actually finding out he's sleeping with her sister as well—but his violation is obviously a big part of the reason she ends up snapping and going either full Yandere or out for his blood.
• Bokura no Hentai: Tamura is the most unhinged of the protagonists and displays behaviors unhealthy for a 13-to-15-year-old. It's shown he has repressed memories of a neighbor who made him crossdress and molested him as a young child.
• Count Cain: Augusta went insane after giving birth to her brother's Child by Rape and had to be institutionalized. When Cain, not knowing she was his mother as well as his aunt, went to visit her in secret, she freaked out and threw herself out the window. At the end of the series, we learn that this is a subversion. While Augusta really did go insane afterwards, she had been more than willing to sleep with her brother all along.
• Cross Ange:
  • In episode 20, it turns out that this is the reason Jill lost it; the original Libertus had ended in failure because Embryo raped her in both mind and body.
  • Ange herself finds her mental and emotional stability tested with all the times Embryo tries mind control her into going to bed with him and finally tries to rape her because she kept rejecting him.
• A Cruel God Reigns: In the manga, Jeremy is repeatedly raped and beaten by his step-father, Greg Roland, which eventually drives him to tamper with Greg's car, killing him. For the rest of the series, Jeremy is haunted by images of Greg talking to him, leading him to become a drug addict and a prostitute in an attempt to forget.
• Deadman Wonderland: One of the factors that made Genkaku Ax-Crazy was how he was raped as a teenager.
• Descendants of Darkness has the reveal of Dr. Muraki having impulsively raped thirteen-year-old Hisoka, then cursed him so that he slowly and painfully died over the course of three years as major character development for both of them. Made particularly painful by Hisoka being an empath who can feel other people's emotions especially strongly through physical contact, to the extent that Tsuzuki grabbing him when he's upset causes Hisoka to scream, making it a sort of Mind Rape too.
  • Extra points for 1) the heavy implication later on that Muraki's mother molested him and 2) the possibly-accidental revelation that twelve-year-old Muraki Kazutaka looked frighteningly identical to little Hisoka. So...yeah, he was working out his own backstory issues there, too. Also he aims an incredible amount of Ho Yay to Tsuzuki which becomes horrifying when he reveals that he wants to revive his dead brother, put his head on Tsuzuki's body and then kill him again.
• Elfen Lied: Maya. It's heavily implied in the anime, after running away from home after refusing to stay and let her stepfather sexually abuse her again, that she was planning on committing suicide. She leaves her shoes on the shoreline and starts to wade out into the ocean, but turns back when she hears a puppy barking. Supplementary materials confirm that Mayu cannot swim. The rape also soured her attitude towards men in general, but she does get better.
• In Fullmetal Alchemist (2003), it was implied that Rose was raped by Amestris soldiers. She went mute after that, but she didn't start acting unusual until Dante manipulated her (potentially through drugging her). She does eventually get better.
• Fushigi Yuugi:
  • Both Miaka and Yui experience rape attempts and go through Break the Cutie.
  • Nakago was made a Sex Slave when he was young. This was his Start of Darkness.
• Future Diary: Tsubaki Kasugano - The 6th was kept as a mix of Sex Slave and puppet leader by a Religion of Evil.. She tries to have Yuno raped later as part of a gambit to get at her and Yuki.
• Gankutsuou: Andrea is a psychotic man into very twisted things who wants to force his half sister Eugenie to marry him but she wanted to be with Albert. Before Albert could return to Paris, Eugenie tried to leave the Danglars mansion. This unfortunately results in Andrea giving chase and sexually assaulting Eugenie, psychologically scarring her and manipulating her into staying.
• Haou Airen: Zigzagged all over the place. Reilan was driven to bitterness and insanity after she gets gangraped by the mooks of her fiancé Hakuron's rival and forced into prostitution, and she gets so broken that she invokes the trope via setting her love rival Kurumi to be gangraped in front of Hakuron himself to specifically mess with the girl's mind. Even when Kurumi is rescued, Reilan uses this as a part of a Thanatos Gambit as well, so she gets broken anyway — but by the end, she gets somewhat better. And also, Kurumi is raped by Hakuron himself in front of a newfound friend... and that friend is the one who goes crazy instead, which leads him to ultimately shoot Hakuron dead.
• Hellsing:
  • Alucard, aka Vlad Tepes Dracul of Wallachia was sexually abused as a child during his time spent as a political hostage for his father under the Ottoman Empire by the sultan. Currently, he's clearly off his rocker.
  • Seras is a cute vampire girl who gets embarrassed when Alucard asks if she's a virgin, and then there is her screaming anger and flustered behavior towards the lecherous Pip Bernadotte and Wild Geese's "Sexual Harassment". Later, we learn that Zorin opened up her memories and revealed that her mother's corpse was raped after she was killed right in front of Seras on the night her entire family was slaughtered. No wonder she's so uncomfortable about it. ... Also, Seras was nearly raped by a vampire in the first episode/chapter. And there's the oft-glossed-over part where she was being groped by ghouls (they also forced apart her legs) prior to going into a blood-rage as a result of her Hates Being Touched Berserk Button being pressed in an early OVA. She also has nightmares about how she is threatened with rape attempts and three villains, and one Hero Antagonist have made rape-like overtures towards her.
  • Rip Van Winkle is all but raped by Alucard during a final show down with him, almost making one feel sorry for the poor villainess.
• Higurashi: When They Cry:
  • Overlaps with Orphanage of Fear and Being Tortured Makes You Evil in the case of Miyo Takano in the manga version.
  • It is implied that Rena's rampage in Ibaraki was sparked by a rape attempt by the three boys she injured, but there were other contributing factors.
• Kaze to Ki no Uta:
  • Gilbert is utterly messed up from suffering rape and other kinds of trauma in his youth.
  • Auguste and Rosemariné (to an extent) as well, as Auguste was raped by his stepbrother and Rosemariné was raped by Auguste when Rosemariné was fifteen.
• Loveless: Soubi, after having been raped by his teacher as a teenager, has become an Extreme Doormat with severe issues.
• Neon Genesis Evangelion: Asuka crosses the Despair Event Horizon and ends up catatonic after her Mind Rape. By Word of God we're supposed to understand that she literally gets raped. Several dubs/scanlations have her actually say "I've been raped/violated!" and "it's raping/defiling my mind/soul!" as she's psychically tortured by the Angel. As a double whammy Shinji masturbates over her comatose body. She’s deeply disgusted and furious over this; Shinji himself is disgusted with his behavior and doesn’t try to stop some bad guys from trying to off him. Luckily Misato saves the suicidally depressed Shinji.
• Now and Then, Here and There: Sara is made to be a Sex Slave rather than a Child Soldier and is assaulted at least once. The second time she's had enough and brutally beats her attacker to death. When she found out she was pregnant from the rape she was planning to drown herself in Zari Bars' main source of water. Not to mention trying to induce abortion by smashing a rock against her stomach.
• Peacemaker Kurogane: Suzu becomes Ax-Crazy and a Depraved Homosexual after an old man rapes him and seeks to get revenge on Tetsu because he believes he’s the reason he got such a bad hand like he did.
• Perfect Blue:
  • Mima begins to lose her grip on reality after she is supposedly raped for a film during her new acting career. Or does she get raped? After this scenario is shown, we hear a bell ring and a director yell "Cut!" and the movie continues into more twists and turns. Also, Mima gets photographed by a borderline rapist who convinced her to get naked for him to photograph. He gets uncomfortably close to her while she's naked and takes obscene pictures of her. The risqué photo shoot is indispersed with shots of her stabbing the hell out of the photographer. Also, it's implied the stabbing was Rumi's doing.
  • Zigzagged with Rumi. During Mima's implied rape scene for a movie she's filming; it is at that point where Rumi starts to lose it as she's watching the recording, crying hysterically. You realize that Rumi may already have been unstable and delusional, but this and the risque photo shoot were the things that pushed her permanently over the edge. Or even worse, if Rumi was already delusional, she thought she was seeing herself getting raped, because she saw herself as Mima. It gets worse when you consider just how strongly she protested Mima doing it in the first place and how it connects with the conclusion of the Show Within a Show.
• Revolutionary Girl Utena:
  • Word of God states that Touga's backstory in Adolescence of Utena, where he was raped by his adoptive father, extends to the anime series. He goes through woman like tissue paper, sleeps with Miki in a scene hinting at dubious consent in the novels, has a close relationship with his adoptive sister Nanami, has a thing for Utena (and approaches her in the novels after his 'scene' with Miki which makes Miki worry for her), and is implied to have slept with Akio and Saionji. He also is best friends with Saionji and he deliberately acts behind the scenes to get Saionji expelled from school. The relationship between Nanami and Touga especially falls into No Yay, thanks to her sheer obsession with him and the way he emotionally manipulates her. It all reaches a head in episode 32, in which Touga suddenly tries to rape Nanami in Akio's car (which she fights off in horror) and he gets angry because if sex isn't what she wanted, then what does she want? Actually, the sheer level of bullshit he pulls on her in that episode is nightmarish in itself. That Touga's idea of family love and romance has been so completely warped by the rape makes the entire mess between the two of them chilling, to say the least.
  • The dubious nature of the sex scene between Akio and Utena in episode 33, seeing as how she's fourteen years old and he's way older than her, and the topic of discussion. You won't be thinking of sandwiches the same way again for a good while afterwards. All the more nightmarish when you see her gasping in pain and kanji reading afterwards "Stop it...stop it...stop it...". It's like she's desperately trying to retain her sanity and sense of self and get her mind off of the dubious situation with Akio by talking about what she should make for lunch tomorrow or trying to deflect Akio's attention and ministrations on her by mentioning Anthy and how she needs to leave to make lunch.
  • Akio's relationship with Anthy is incestuous as its revealed they're sleeping together with the implication being that he raped her before. Her past, along with the dubious nature of her sexual relationship with her own brother, and her fate to be stabbed by humanity's hatred forever make it obvious why she is the Extreme Doormat suicidal Broken Bird we know today.
• Rosario + Vampire: Mizore Shirayuki reacts this way to Miyabi, even though he only went as far as stealing a kiss and handling her a bit forcefully. Still, that alone would have been a very traumatic experience, especially since she was so emotionally fragile to begin with. She proceeds to jump out of a window, only for Kurumu to save her.
• Sakura Gari:
  • A big reason Souma is so messed up and a Depraved Bisexual is because of all the rape and other trauma he endured in his past.
  • Masataka himself nearly splinters mentally after he endures being raped by Katsuragi and Souma.
• School Days: Kotonoha's mental and emotional breakdown hits her fully after she's raped by her Stalker with a Crush, Makoto's best friend Taisuke.
• Sensual Phrase: In the manga, Aine's raped by a high-ranked executive who had a beef against Sakuya. Poor girl nearly splinters mentally after that.
• Strawberry Panic!: Hikari is targeted for Attempted Rape thrice. (Twice by Kaname and once by Yaya) Both experiences terrorize her and make her withdraw into herself expressing Hidden Eyes. Although Hikari forgives Yaya for her previous sexual harrassment, she's naturally still scared to get close to her after that. The way she visibly flinches around her, and Yaya's guilt ends up in her refusing to go to the Etoile competition, with Tsubomi comforting her so she won't have to be all alone.
• Sukisho: In the game, it's revealed that Sunao was raped by Aizawa and his men during his time in the lab. In the series proper, Sunao clearly suffers from PTSD as a result and has abandonment issues. He even tries to stab Aizawa with scissors in a moment of insanity in the anime.
• Texhnolyze: Onishi's secretary Michiko, by the end of the series, has been raped and abused so much by a trio of remaining Luxites that she's barely responsive and only asks to be killed.
• Tokyo Ghoul:
  • Ayu aka Nutcracker is a promiscuous scantily dressed ghoul who preys on men and women. She once ate a beautiful woman's face and has the standard attack of stomping on a man's genitals and sucking them up. It's implied Ayu either was sexually assaulted in the past, prostituted herself to get money, or a mix of both, as a flashback has her thinking "I need money" when looking up at three sketchy-looking guys with slasher smiles.
  • Tooru Mutsuki is implied to have been raped by his father after he physically abused him by holding his head under water and leered at him, and later Torso as well. The first event is implied to have been the reason Mutsuki decided to live as a male and is why he finds Male Gaze to be disgusting. The second event makes him break down in tears and believe that he's cursed because of him being taken advantage of by men in his life, namely his father and Torso. Both of the implied rapes make Mutsuki snap and causes him to kill his father, his family, and brutally maim and kill Torso in revenge. His maiming of animals and keeping a collection of their tongues while tearfully denying and repressing all these memories is also implied to be a result of the trauma of physical and sexual abuse by his father and the murder he did of his own family and his own twisted way of coping Also, he has scars on his breast and in chapter 13 the words "rape" "rape" "rape" "a woman" come to his head when men give him the Male Gaze in a club. After both sexual assaults Mutsuki succumbs to full on Ax-Crazy-ness.
  • In one scene we see Big Madam fingering Juuzou's mouth while talking about how pretty her "Rei-chan" is and then reaching down to grope his genitals beneath his dress prior to castrating him with a hammer. It's his past, combined with sexual assault as well as physical abuse and torture that made Juuzou lose his sanity, though he gets better with Shinohara's influence.
  • Shortly after Seidou's ghoul surgery, Dr. Kanou visits him and mentions that when he comes back later, he'll be collecting various samples...including semen which is implied he'll acquire through forced ejaculation. The scene fades there, leaving that piece of the experimentation to the audience's imagination. The horrors he experienced of the ghoul world as a human as well as the torture Kanou put him through made him who he is today.
  • The above implies Kanou did the same to Kaneki when he made him into a half ghoul and there's also the implication that Yamori assaulted him sexually or possibly castrated him in addition to torturing him by putting a centipede in his ear which Yamori describes it as a "violation" and repeatedly cutting off his fingers and toes. It's no surprise he becomes a cold merciless Anti-Hero.
• Trigun: Legato Bluesummers is shown to have been raped (possibly numerous times) by the town mayor, or something like a mayor. As you might guess, he's now quite Ax-Crazy.
• Wolf Guy - Wolfen Crest:
  • Konuma Ryuuko is a nymphomaniac middle-schooler with what appears to be profound psychological damage from repeated rapes in her past, which made her a nihilistic sociopath.
  • Later, Haguro tries to use gang-rape on Hot Teacher Aoshika to Break the Cutie in regards to both her and Inugami. It almost worked.
  • Haguro raped and beat Chiba out of jealousy because of Chiba talking to Inugami when Haguro wasn't around, and it doesn't end well for him. He goes Roaring Rampage of Revenge before he is slaughtered.
  • Inugami gets to witness first-hand as Aoshika's getting gang-raped because Haguro recorded it and put it on the internet. The normally stoic wolf has full-blown Broken Tears as his Mask of Sanity breaks.
  • A poor schoolgirl has a breakdown and pees herself when a mass shooter threatens to rape her with his gun.
