The Legend of Maian (마이언 전기 Mayan Chronicles) is a Korean novel and an ongoing manhwa created by Dal-young Im and illustrated by Soo-cheol Jeong. The plot revolves around the story of Fenix Maian, a weak and naive young man who unknowingly unleashes the powerful sorceress Feicia Rand Philistine.
The Legend of Maian takes place in the fictional kingdom of Shurian. Here, the countries bid for power by using regular military means or by using joosts (mages) or people that can use madra (magic). Of all the countries, the countries of Shurian and Pennsylvania are the strongest. Each country is ruled by a king with its joosts often having a high-ranking position. So far, only Shurian, Meningrad and Pennsylvania are the only countries to be mentioned.
The powerful sorceress, Feicia Rand Philistine, once tried to Take Over the World. In the wake of her terror and destruction, a young man rebelled against her oppression and domination. The people called him Yongja Maian (Maian the brave) and it was he who was eventually able to seal away the evil sorceress.
A thousand years later Fenix Maian, a descendant of Maian the Brave has just probably made the biggest mistake of his life when he releases the sealed sorceress that his ancestors have tried so hard to imprison. Now he is charged with the task of trying to keep the sorceress from once again trying to take over the world...
The Legend of Maian has examples of:
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Felicia doesn't like it when other girls get close to Felix.
- Deflector Shields: Another of Feicia's spells, simple called Absolute Defense Field. Seems to be limited to holding two people.
- Did You Just Have Sex?: Everyone's reaction to Felicia and Fenix's perkiness the day after they slept together. Soon afterwards, Felicia is killed.
- Heroic Lineage: Fenix is Maian's descendant, but he appears to be weaker than other members of his family. His younger brother is a better swordsman and his father leads an army. Fenix is hinted to have a hidden power that defeated Felicia 1000 years ago. If he does have it, Felicia claims she will try to kill him
- Jekyll & Hyde: Those who suffer the Devilshu curse are generally nice people until their curse acts up which will make them either very big Jerkasses or full on Berserkers.
- Kick the Dog: Felix post-time skip is seen verbally and physically abusing Ruby multiple times and once tried to kill a man who stood up for her; it's clear from early on that he is NOT the same person he used to be.
- Living Emotional Crutch: Ruby was Fenix's only companion during the five year Time Skip, and the only person thus-far that has had any sort of success in pulling him out of his Berserk rages (though it takes a lot of effort on her part)
- Long Bus Trip: After not appearing since the second chapter of the series, Felix's brother Lans and wife appear in Volume 13 again and have several chapters about their times.
- Love Triangle:
- Fenix is in love with his brother's wife, she kinda flirts with him, and his brother is well married to her. Then Fenix left that village and the whole thing took background to the plot.
- Fenix, Felicia, and Ruby: it's quite clear that both the girls like Fenix, but his affections for them have not been specified although it seems like he gets jealous over Felicia.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: The divine power that granted Paiaz Maian victory over Felicia turns its user's eyes red. Felicia has stated in no uncertain terms that if Felix ever manifests that power she will consider him an enemy and strike him down. Though, she decides to just sleep with him instead.
- Superpowered Evil Side: Fenix, post Time Skip. He's clearly very powerful, but his inability to control himself makes him a danger to everyone around him.
- Time Skip: Part 2 starts about 5 years after Felicia's death. The Big Bad has started an all out war against the other nations and it isn't going well for them.
- Took A Level In Jerk Ass: The years during the Time Skip were not kind to Felix, turning him into a bitter and jaded AntiHero with a nasty temper. It's implied that a lot of this is due to the large amount of unresolved grief he carries due to Felicia's death sometimes causes his powers to go out of control, sending him into berserk rages. It's also implied that something bad happened to the Regis knights he traveled with.
- Touched by Vorlons: It is said Maian the Brave was blessed by three powerful goddesses, including the Goddess of Creation Warna Val Nagasath.
- Undying Loyalty:
- Even after 1000 years, the Regis Knights remain loyal to Felicia. Strongly averted for Diha Shion who was ironically the most loyal to Felicia in the beginning.
- Ruby is this to Fenix. She remained loyal to him for 5 years, despite his Devilshu Curse and his Jerkass abuse of her.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Fenix gets called out on his Jerkass behavior post Time Skip by the new characters.
- Xanatos Gambit: According to Lyna, when Maian sealed Felicia away he didn't seal away her powers, probably assumed she might need them back for some greater evil. If none shows up, then great, no more evil, but if one does then she'll come in handy.
