As expected from a work where characters face off against each other in urban gang wars, Tokyo Revengers can get pretty bleak - but that doesn't mean it can't also be hilarious at times!

Toman arc (Chapters 1-12, episodes 1-5)

  • Takemichi’s reaction upon seeing his fourteen-year-old self’s reflection in a mirror after his first time leap.
  • Makoto and Yamagishi’s introductions immediately establishing them as horny teenagers as they openly discuss adult magazines in public.
  • After receiving an emotional Rousing Speech from adult Naoto about being the only one capable of saving Hinata, present Takemichi shakes hands with him, filled with determination to go back in time and change the past… only to find himself thrown in the middle of a fighting ring, with an entire crowd cheering him on while his opponent defies him. He manages to buy just enough time to check the date on his phone, before getting clocked in the face and immediately passing out.
    • One of the people in the crowd yells about having 1,000 yennote  riding on Takemichi.
  • Mikey’s Establishing Character Moment, as he complains to Draken about being all out of dorayaki in front of the entire fighting ring. He then proceeds to declare that Takemichi is his pal from then on.
  • Takemichi freaking out about Mikey’s declaration of friendship, including getting an Imagine Spot of Mikey forcing him to lick dog poo.
  • Mikey and Draken interrupt Takemichi’s class and more or less kidnap him. On the way out, he sees several of his upperclassmen passed out in the hallway. Draken explains that he flattened them all because they “pissed him off”. Mikey and him then force them to line up while lying face down and step on them as they walk down the hallway.
  • Takemichi’s reaction when Hinata slaps Mikey.
  • Hinata and Takemichi are outside watching fireworks. Takemichi starts thinking that he doesn’t want to go back to his timeline because he’s enjoying his life in the past too much, goes to hold Hinata’s hand with his eyes closed… and accidentally grabs Naoto’s hand instead. Cue a Big "NO!" as Takemichi is forcefully sent back to the future.
    • Adult Naoto is just as disappointed as him, since no progress has been made on the case.
“You took my hand by accident?!”
  • Naoto is absolutely horrified after stepping inside Takemichi’s apartment, even going back outside to go buy a mask. A manga panel shows him holding a mushroom-covered sock.
  • Pah-chin and Peh-yan try to rough up Takemichi as revenge for Kiyomasa, before Mitsuya reminds them that Kiyomasa was the one at fault and to drop it. Pah replies that he doesn’t get it because he’s a dumbass; Peh enthusiastically adds that Pah is “as smart as a water flea”.
  • After learning that a fight between Mikey and Draken was the reason for Toman’s Start of Darkness, Takemichi decides to tail them for a day to be able to intervene.
    • The first time he hears them raise their voices turns out to be Mikey throwing a tantrum at a restaurant because the kid’s meal he ordered came without a flag. Draken immediately pulls a flag out of his pocket and plants it on Mikey’s meal, turning his leader’s frown upside down.
    • The second time, Draken was getting annoyed by Mikey snoring too loud after falling asleep at said restaurant. Apparently, eating makes him sleepy. Draken then proceeds to carry Mikey out on his back like a small child.

Moebius arc (Chapters 13-33, episodes 6-12)

  • The sheer difference between past Osanai and future Osanai has both the readers and Takemichi do a double take.
  • After Takemichi wakes up in the hospital, Emma tells him about the conflict between Draken and Mikey, which she’s obviously very upset about. She then puts her head in his lap and starts making muffled sobs as he pets her hair to comfort her. That’s the exact moment Hinata chooses to walk in, and she completely misinterprets the situation.
  • Takemichi is very proud of having spent three days completing a giant puzzle after having to stay in his house to recover from his injuries. Draken proceeds to destroy it with a single punch when Mikey’s name gets brought up.
  • Mikey and Draken have their showdown in Takemichi’s courtyard, as he unsuccessfully tries to stop them. They end up throwing Takemichi’s most precious possessions at each other, including but not limited to: his bike, his “golden” baseball bat (which Draken breaks over his knee), a souvenir from the first festival Takemichi’s dad took him to, his skateboard, his computer, an inflatable buoy, a fishing rod, and various types of balls and rackets. Takemichi’s increasingly desperate screams in the anime are the cherry on top of the cake.
    • When confronted about the destruction they’ve caused afterwards, both Mikey and Draken are genuinely surprised.
      Mikey: Ah.
      Draken: …When did that happen?
    • Takemichi is understandably upset. He goes to punch Mikey, but the latter dodges and Takemichi goes crashing into a pile of trash bags instead.
    • Takemichi delivers an eye-opening, tear-jerking speech to Mikey and Draken about the way their conflict is going to affect Toman, before turning around and going to leave. Mikey calls him back and points out that there’s been poop stuck in his hair the whole time, ever since he landed in the trash. Mikey and Draken both find it so funny that they end up reconciling over making fun of Takemichi.
  • During the summer festival, Hinata promises to forgive Takemichi if he manages to win her the grand prize at the shooting booth. Not only is it expensive, said “grand prize” is actually tiny. And while Takemichi manages to hit the target can point blank, the booth owner refuses to give him the prize, since the can didn’t get knocked over.
Takemichi: But I totally hit that thing!
    Booth owner: Doesn’t count.
Takemichi: You got a magnet or something glued at the bottom, don’t you?!
    Booth owner: Hm? Doesn’t count.
Takemichi: Don’t mess with me! I got something real important riding on this!!
Booth owner: Mmm, still doesn’t count.
  • After word of his actions during the festival fight spreads, Takemichi becomes a celebrity among local delinquents and develops a massive ego as a result. On his way to see Draken to the hospital, he struts down the street wearing Cool Shades and gaudy clothes (including an open-buttoned shirt and red shorts with an "OUTLAW" print), giddily thinking that he doesn't want to go back to the present, all the while his friends stand back in shame.
Atsushi: Why did we bother saving this guy?
    • Draken calls him out on looking like an idiot the moment Takemichi steps foot in his room.
  • Back in the present, Takemichi and Hinata attempt to make small talk after not seeing each other for twelve years. Takemichi mentions the nice weather, with Hinata agreeing. An exasperated Naoto immediately points out that it’s overcast, before attempting to leave because he can’t stand the awkwardness in the atmosphere.

Valhalla arc (Chapters 34-77, episodes 13-N/A)

  • At the bath house, Draken shows off his abs to Takemichi. Mikey proceeds to punch his scar, causing Draken to yelp in pain. The two of them then have a fight in the bath in front of a horrified Takemichi, with a panel showing Draken attempting to drown Mikey.
  • Baji's look and attitude at school, despite being a hopeless Book Dumb delinquent.
  • The entire chapter of Takemichi, Hinata and Naoto tailing Emma and Mikey. It includes Takemichi having an Imagine Spot about Mikey and Draken fighting over Emma and leading to the destruction of Toman, Hinata pulling off a surprisingly good impression of Sherlock Holmes, Yamagishi coming in cluth with his encyclopaedic knowledge, and Draken having a dramatic entrance at the end... only for the situation to have been one big misunderstanding all along, as Emma is actually Mikey's little sister who he took out for her birthday.
  • Back in the present, Smiley insults Pah-chin by calling him a shitbrain. Peh-yan's reaction? Acting offended, and immediately saying that Pah-chin's brain is nothing but air, so "shitbrain" doesn't even cover it. Pah enthusiastically agrees.

Black Dragon arc (Chapters 78-121)

  • An annoyed Yuzuha points out that Hakkai’s phone lockscreen is a picture of Mitsuya, even though hers is a picture of Hakkai. Takemichi is mildly disturbed in both cases.
  • Taiju's Dynamic Entry: running full-speed towards the Black Dragons and Takemichi's group, then tackling Takemichi, sending him flying to the ground.
Taiju: Your shit... just got wrecked!
    • He then complains about everyone having "fun" (threatening to kill each other) without him, and demands to join in.
  • In order to stop Hakkai from leaving Toman, Chifuyu and Takemichi come up with a plan.
    • The first step involves offering Mikey a dorayaki as Hakkai resigns. Clearly that does not fly with Mikey, since he slaps the snack away, much to Takemichi's dismay.
    • Unfortunately for our hero, he finds out that the second step of the plan that Chifuyu wrote in a notebook is just "COURAGE", followed by a few body language and speech tips. When Takemichi turns towards Chifuyu, he only receives a thumbs-up in response.
Takemichi: I forgot... that he's... an idiot...
  • A flashback shows a younger Mitsuya stopping Hakkai from beating up another boy… while having his infant sister in a baby carrier. He proceeds to comfort her when she starts crying, cooing about the big meanie boy who startled her. Hakkai’s expression really sells it.
  • The improbable team-up that is Takemichi, Chifuyu, Kisaki and Hanma. Each member makes their disdain for the other duo very clear — except Hanma, who is being his usual giddy self and coming up with funny names such as "The Hanmas", "Team Kill-Em-All" or "C4U"note .
  • A younger Mikey asks Shinichiro why he's so well-respected with other delinquents since he can't fight, runs after girls and has smelly farts. For each new question, an arrow is shown wounding Shinichiro.

Tenjiku arc (Chapters 122-185)

  • In her dedicated chapter, a younger Emma is welcomed into the Sano household. Shinichiro playfully tells her that he'll be her big brother from now on, and that she thus shouldn't fall for his good looks. She immediately insults his hairstyle. Mikey finds that hilarious.
    • Mikey and Baji come up with foreign nicknames for themselves in order to make Emma feel more welcome, and run around the dojo speaking in broken English and laughing loudly, while she silently judges them.
  • There is something comical about watching the Haitani brothers bicker like regular siblings, despite being infamous delinquents with high-ranking positions in their gang. Rindo in particular doesn’t hesitate to voice his displeasure with Ran’s bossy attitude and eccentricities.
  • Kakucho tells Takemichi that he lost on purpose to Smiley... while staggering to his feet. Takemichi flatly calls him a liar. Kakucho is very offended.
  • After getting hyped up as one of the Four Heavenly Kings, a former Black Dragon president and the “mad dog” of Tenjiku, Shion Madarame is chosen for the opening duel before the battle and promises to kill every Toman member by himself. He’s immediately defeated with a single punch from Peh-yan.
  • The Haitani brothers, some of the cruelest, most despicable characters in the entire series, are genuinely shocked by Angry bawling his eyes out in the middle of a fight.
  • A flashback narrated by Izana details how Shinichiro taught him everything he knows… including the delinquent fashion sense. Cue a panel of small Izana sporting a pompadour, Cool Shades, and high-waisted baggy pants, with Shinichiro laughing madly at the sight.
  • Really Black Comedy, but Kisaki getting hit by a truck out of nowhere is almost laughably anticlimactic. It doesn't help that the scene has been compared to a similar one at the end of Mean Girls.

Bonten arc (Chapters 186-206)

  • According to Yuzuha, it took Hakkai ten years to be able to talk to Hinata.
  • The pressure poor Pah-chin faces when it’s time to cut his cake during his wedding: Peh-yan yells at him to show them his “manliness”, both he and Kazutora are recording with their phones, and shouts of “Hurry up!” start coming from the crowd as Pah ineffectively yells for everyone to shut up.

Three Deities arc (Chapters 207-235)

  • Shion tries to provoke Senju into a fight after she attacked South. She asks who he is, despite him having (loudly) introduced himself moments earlier. His reaction is a mix between “disbelief” and “offended”.
    • Then, right as he begins to introduce himself again, he gets one-hit K.O.ed by Benkei and is nowhere to be seen for the remainder of the confrontation.
  • Wakasa and Benkei's Establishing Character Moment.
    • After dealing with Shion, Benkei loudly tells Senju not to bother with the small fry and to focus on Brahman's objective, while standing right next to her. She just leans to the side with an annoyed look on her face and tells him how noisy he's being.
    • Wakasa's Stealth Hi/Bye to Kakucho, followed by a rather intimidating Badass Boast. Benkei yells at him to stop standing around acting cool, to which Wakasa replies that he's simply following orders.
  • Senju and Takemichi’s shopping trip is full of lighthearted moments in an otherwise dark arc.
    • The Reveal that Senju is a girl is comically casual, with her simply showing up in her school uniform, much to Takemichi (and readers’) shock.
    • The two of them have a discussion while Senju is trying on different outfits in a shop. She suddenly pulls back the curtains while wearing nothing but her bra and skirt, causing a flustered Takemichi to yell at her. She doesn’t see what the big deal is.
    • In front of an ice cream vending machine, Takemichi mentions that he enjoys the choco-mint flavor, with Senju replying that those two things don’t go together. Gilligan Cut to her eating a choco-mint ice cream stick, marveling at how tasty it is.
  • Senju having the time of her life on the rollercoaster at the amusement park while Takemichi is screaming for his life, crying, and trying his best not to throw up. Repeatedly.
  • Easy to miss, but in the flashback showing the day South defeated the S-62, Shion is lying unconscious face down with his ass up in the air.

Kanto Manji arc (Chapters 236-N/A)

  • Chifuyu’s gang shirt.
  • “TAAAKAAAAAA-CHAAAAAAAN, LET’S PLAYYYYYYY!”
  • The first thing Mitsuya does upon joining Toman 2? Fully redesign the uniforms.
  • During his team up with Mitsuya, Hakkai comes up with a rather interesting plan to separate the Haitani brothers: he launches himself at full-speed towards Rindo, throws him over his shoulder, and promptly runs off. Both Rindo and Ran's utterly bewildered expressions as one of them is essentially kidnapped in the middle of a fight make for a few hearty chuckles. Meanwhile, Mitsuya himself seems split between pride and disbelief.
  • It gets rather dark once you remember what he's planning to do with it, but Sanzu struggling to operate one of the old cargo trains and pressing several buttons at random as he mutters about wishing it were easier is both comical and unexpectedly realistic.
    • A few chapters later, Kakucho yells at Takemichi to hit the brakes on the now-moving train. Takemichi runs to the driver's cab, and immediately asks where the brakes are upon seeing the dashboard.
  • Taiju proves that he hasn't lost his touch for making a Dynamic Entry since the Black Dragon arc as he rides into the battlefield full-speed on his bike, jumps off it, and sends it crashing into Sanzu, wearing a huge Slasher Smile on his face the whole time — under the baffled eyes of everyone present.
  • Taiju calling Inui and Kokonoi a dog-cat duo, as the two of them are shown drawn with features of their respective Animal Motifs during an otherwise serious moment. Even funnier knowing that the name doubles as a Pun on their names in Japanese (InuNeko).

Extras

  • The character books are treasure troves of funny trivia.
    • There are sections for each character's height and weight. Instead of numbers, Emma's weight is listed as "three apples".
      • She also dislikes Draken's bike because she sees it as her rival in love.
    • Draken's life dream is to be half-motorcycle.
    • Atsushi and Takemichi became friends after Atsushi beat Takemichi up on the first day of middle school.
    • Makoto's special skill is the octopus hold (erotic style).
    • Hanma's life dream is to have 100 slaves to do everything for him, from getting up to going to bed.
    • The person Baji fears most is his mom.
    • Shinichiro got rejected over 20 times.
    • Taiju's dream is... being a shark.
    • There is a "Shiba Fanclub" at the school the siblings go to. Yuzuha initially thought it was for Hakkai. It was actually for her.
    • Kakucho's daily training regimen consists of yoga, bench-presses and fighting street thugs.
      • He once dragged Rindo into a Yakuza den under the guise of training together. Rindo swore off training with Kakucho ever again.
    • The reason why the Haitani brothers always wear different uniforms no matter what gang they're in is because they like to stand out. Izana hates it.
    • Ran stripping Rindo's guests down to their underwear and beating them up after his sleep was spoiled by their partying. Rindo himself hid in the bathroom and snuck out to buy Mont Blanc to bribe his brother into going easy on him.
      • Ran telling his hair stylist he wants his hair to "sound" like the last song Miles Davis played on the piano. The stylist corrects him by noting that Miles Davis is a trumpet player.
    • Sanzu's idea of a birthday present for Muto? Hunting down people who hate his captain, scalping them, then gifting him their hair. When Muto (understandably) got mad at him for it, Sanzu declared that he was "hard to read".
    • Shion being completely oblivious to sarcasm and convinced that Rindo respects him.
Shion: Rindo is all about hierarchy. That's why he respects me, who outranks him. I always complain to him about this: "The fighting power within our generation and Toman's is buggy. In a different generation, you and I would've definitely taken over the world. Seriously, with people like Izana and Kakucho, or Mikey and Draken, that's just unfair."
Rindo: Shion-senpai, I really, like, seriously respect you for knowing all that and still acting so cool.
Shion: Rindo, you... As I thought, you're a good guy.
    • Izana's special skill is "destroying what's precious to other people".
      • After getting scared that Kakucho would become stronger than him, he declared that "the servant must never avoid the king's punches" and beat him to a pulp.
  • Ken Wakui occasionally releases humorous sketches on the series' official Twitter account.
    • One has Pah-chin compare Baji to his dog, and ask him to “shake”. Baji punches him in the face.
    • Peh-yan's Impossibly Tacky Clothes when outside of a gang context.
    • Baji and Draken apparently meet once a month to complain about Mikey.
    • The sketch for the anime release shows several Mikey, Takemichi, Draken, Hanma and Kisaki in a theater. Draken is tearing up and very obviously trying his hardest not to cry.
    • The Kawata twins switch expressions when eating good ramen.
    • Inui and Izana's terribly awkward first meeting, as they're both awful at small talk.
    • Despite working with her under the new Toman hierarchy, Hakkai is incapable of talking to Senju and freezes up whenever she's nearby. She's mildly upset by this, wonders if this is because he doesn't like her, and ends up waving a hand in front of his eyes, which is made difficult by their height difference.
    • In their shared birthday art, the Kawata twins and the Haitani brothers end up at the same bath house. Rindo immediately tries to pick a fight but Ran tells him not to… through a pun. Yep, the Ran Haitani makes dad jokes. Naturally, Rindo is disgusted.
